Chapter 11: The Father I Never Knew
I stared at the envelope.
My father had died when I was eight.
At least, that was the story I'd grown up believing.
My mother rarely spoke about him. Whenever I asked, she told me he had been a good man who had died unexpectedly.
I had one photograph of him.
A smiling man in a blue shirt, holding me on his shoulders at the beach.
I had spent most of my childhood imagining what life would have been like if he had lived.
Now Thomas was telling me my mother had left another secret.
"Uncle Thomas, what does this have to do with Daniel?""
He lowered himself into a chair.
"Your father wasn't the man you think he was.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Explain.""
Thomas opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of a birth certificate, an old photograph, and a handwritten letter.
He placed the photograph in front of me.
It showed my mother standing beside a younger man.
He was tall, dark-haired, and wearing a military uniform.
I recognized him immediately.
Not because I'd seen his face before.
Because he looked exactly like me.
"Who is he?""
Thomas took a breath.
"His name was David Collins.""
"My father's name was David.""
"Yes. But he wasn't your biological father.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"Your mother married David when you were two years old. He raised you as his own. He loved you more than anything.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Then who was my biological father?""
Thomas hesitated.
Then he pointed to the second photograph.
It showed a younger man standing outside a real estate office.
My stomach dropped.
The man was unmistakable.
Daniel's father.
Robert.
I couldn't breathe.
"No.""
Thomas nodded slowly.
"Your mother and Robert had a relationship before she married David. It ended before you were born.""
I stared at him.
"Robert is my biological father?""
"Yes.""
The room seemed to disappear.
I thought about the birthday dinner.
Robert standing with a folded document.
Robert apologizing.
Robert saying he owed me the truth.
I thought about the way he had looked at me during family gatherings.
The way he had always treated me differently from Vanessa and Daniel.
"Does Robert know?""
Thomas nodded.
"He found out shortly before your mother died.""
"Then why didn't he tell me?""
"Because your mother asked him not to disrupt your life. She believed David was your father in every way that mattered.""
I felt tears slipping down my cheeks.
"Why would she hide this from me?""
Thomas placed the letter in front of me.
"Read it.""
The handwriting was unmistakably hers.
Sarah,
There are truths that can destroy a family, and there are truths that can finally explain why a family was never safe.
Robert was part of my life before I met David. When I discovered I was pregnant, Robert was not ready to be a father. David knew the truth and chose to raise you anyway.
He never treated you as anything other than his daughter.
I promised David that you would never grow up feeling unwanted.
I pressed the paper against my chest.
I remembered David teaching me to ride a bicycle.
I remembered him sitting beside my bed when I had nightmares.
I remembered the day he died.
He had been driving home from work when another vehicle crossed the center line.
I had cried for months.
And now I was learning that the man who raised me had chosen me.
That mattered more than biology.
But the letter continued.
Robert eventually regretted his decision. He wanted to be part of your life, but I refused because I feared the consequences of revealing the truth.
Daniel discovered this information years ago.
I stopped reading.
My eyes moved back to the sentence.
Daniel knew?
Thomas nodded.
"Your mother suspected he had discovered it.""
"How?""
"Daniel once asked Robert whether he had ever loved a woman named Margaret.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why would Daniel use this against me?""
Thomas pointed to the final paragraph.
If Daniel ever threatens you with this information, remember that the truth does not make you less loved. David was your father because he chose to be. Robert is your biological father, but Daniel has no right to use that relationship as a weapon.
I slowly lowered the letter.
Michael had been quiet throughout the conversation.
Now he spoke.
"Sarah, this could explain Daniel's access to the family records. But I need to know something.""
"What?""
"Has Daniel ever mentioned your biological father?""
I shook my head.
"Not directly.""
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"There is something else. Robert recently changed his estate arrangements.""
I turned toward him.
"What do you mean?""
"He's planning to divide his estate among his children and make a separate provision for you.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because he wants to acknowledge you.""
Michael leaned forward.
"How much is the estate worth?""
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know exactly. But Robert owns several commercial properties and a substantial investment portfolio.""
I felt sick.
Suddenly, the $420,000 house made even less sense.
Daniel hadn't simply wanted my savings.
He had wanted control of something much larger.
My phone rang.
Robert.
I answered.
"Hello?""
"Sarah, where are you?""
"With Michael and Uncle Thomas.""
He exhaled.
"Thank God.""
"Robert, I just learned something.""
There was a pause.
"I know.""
I closed my eyes.
"You're my biological father.""
His voice cracked.
"Yes.""
I didn't know what to say.
He continued.
"Your mother asked me to stay away because she believed it was best for you. I respected that. But when she died, I realized I had already lost too many years.""
I wiped my eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me at the birthday dinner?""
"I was going to. But then Daniel started shouting, and everything happened so quickly.""
I swallowed.
"Did Daniel know?""
Robert's silence was answer enough.
"How long?""
"At least three years.""
I felt anger rise.
"Why didn't you warn me?""
"I tried. He told me you'd never forgive me if I interfered in your marriage.""
I looked at Michael.
Robert continued.
"Sarah, there's something else. Daniel recently approached me about the inheritance. He wanted me to transfer a commercial property into a company he controlled.""
"Did you?""
"Of course not.""
"Then what happened?""
Robert lowered his voice.
"He told me if I refused, he'd expose your parentage and claim you were trying to manipulate me into changing my will.""
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had been collecting secrets like weapons.
Then Robert said something else.
"Sarah, I need you to come to my house tomorrow. There's a document I want you to see.""
"What document?""
"My original will.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel isn't just trying to steal your money.""
Robert took a shaky breath.
"He's already listed himself as the sole beneficiary of my estate.""
I looked at Michael.
He immediately stood.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
May you like
Robert replied:
"That's what I thought too. Until my attorney showed me the document.""
