Chapter 9: My Mother's Final Recording
Attorney William Carter arrived at the hotel at 2:15 in the morning.
He carried a brown briefcase and wore a dark overcoat.
His expression was serious.
He shook Daniel's hand before sitting across from me.
"Mrs. Mitchell, I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.""
I looked at the briefcase.
"What's in there?""
"Your mother's final instructions. And a recording she made shortly before her death.""
He opened the briefcase and removed a small encrypted USB drive.
"She gave this to me nine years ago. She instructed me not to release it unless someone attempted to take control of your property or medical decisions.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Why didn't you contact me earlier?""
"I tried. Several times.""
He showed me copies of letters sent to my old address.
Every one had been returned.
"Someone changed your mailing information," he explained.
"The new address was connected to your husband's business.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
"That would explain why Marcus received the trust correspondence.""
Attorney Carter placed a laptop on the desk.
"Before we watch this, I need to explain something. Your mother was very specific about the circumstances surrounding her death. She believed someone had tampered with her medical treatment.""
I felt cold.
"Dr. Collins?""
"His name appears in her notes.""
He inserted the USB drive.
A video appeared.
My mother was sitting in her living room.
She looked tired.
Her hair was pulled back, and she wore the blue sweater I remembered from my childhood.
For several seconds, she simply stared at the camera.
Then she began speaking.
"Lauren, my beautiful girl.""
I immediately started crying.
"I don't know whether you'll ever see this. I hope you never need to. But if you're watching, something has gone terribly wrong.""
She paused and took a breath.
"I need you to know that I never stopped loving you. Every decision I've made was to protect you.""
I covered my mouth.
My mother continued.
"Robert knows about you now. He wanted to meet you, but I asked him to wait until the legal arrangements were complete. I didn't want anyone interfering with your future.""
Daniel lowered his head.
The video continued.
"Your father James loved you as his own. Nothing in this world could change that. He knew you weren't biologically his, but he never once treated you differently.""
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
I remembered James teaching me to write my name.
The way he'd held my hand at school.
The way he'd told me I was his greatest gift.
My mother smiled faintly.
"There's something else. I discovered that Marcus was using Emily to access my accounts. He had convinced her that I was planning to disinherit her.""
Attorney Carter leaned forward.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
"Marcus Mitchell is dangerous.""
The room went still.
"He has been stealing money from my company and attempting to transfer my assets. When I confronted him, he threatened me.""
I felt Daniel's hand tighten around the edge of the desk.
My mother continued.
"I made a mistake by trusting him near my family. But I will not allow him to destroy Lauren's future.""
Then she looked away.
Someone had entered the room.
A voice came from outside the camera's view.
"Did you finish recording?""
My mother's face changed.
I recognized that voice.
Marcus.
He was younger, but it was unmistakably him.
My mother turned toward the doorway.
"You need to leave.""
Marcus stepped into the frame.
"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""
"I told you. The documents are going to Lauren.""
"You don't have to do this.""
"Yes, I do.""
Marcus leaned closer.
"Think about Emily.""
My mother stood.
"Get out of my house.""
The recording suddenly shook.
There was a loud noise.
Then the screen went black.
I couldn't breathe.
"Was that it?"" I whispered.
Attorney Carter shook his head.
"No.""
He opened another file.
"This is the second recording.""
A different video appeared.
My mother was in a hospital room.
Her face was pale, and an oxygen tube ran beneath her nose.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Lauren, if you've reached this recording, I need you to know something.""
Her voice was weak.
"The doctors told me my stroke was caused by a sudden medical event. But I believe someone gave me something that triggered it.""
I gripped Daniel's hand.
My mother continued.
"I asked the nurse to check my medication. She discovered that my prescription had been changed without authorization.""
My eyes widened.
The same thing that had happened to me.
My mother had been given something.
Something that may have caused her collapse.
Then she said the name.
"Dr. Richard Collins.""
I looked at Attorney Carter.
He nodded grimly.
My mother continued.
"He was the physician who approved the medication. But he wasn't acting alone.""
She swallowed.
"I saw the person who brought him the instructions.""
The camera moved slightly.
My mother leaned closer.
And then she whispered:
"It was someone I trusted with my own daughter.""
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Attorney Carter closed the laptop.
"Mrs. Mitchell, there is one more thing.""
He removed a folded document from his briefcase.
It was a copy of my mother's original medical authorization.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Emily.
But the date was different from the date on the hospital records.
"Your sister signed this before your mother's hospitalization," he explained.
"It gave her temporary authority to coordinate medical arrangements.""
I stared at the paper.
"Why would she have that authority?""
"Your mother requested it initially. She believed Emily could help.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"But the authorization was revoked.""
Attorney Carter nodded.
"Three hours before your mother collapsed.""
My stomach twisted.
"Who revoked it?""
He pointed to the signature.
My mother's.
Then he showed me the witness section.
A second signature appeared.
I recognized it immediately.
Marcus Mitchell.
He had witnessed the revocation.
He knew my mother no longer trusted Emily.
And yet he had allowed Emily to keep making decisions.
I felt sick.
Attorney Carter placed another document beside it.
"This is a report from the hospital. It contains an unexplained discrepancy in the medication records.""
I read the final paragraph.
A nurse had documented that my mother was conscious shortly before her condition deteriorated.
She had asked to speak to her daughter.
Me.
But the visitation log showed that someone had refused my visit.
I looked at the name recorded beneath the refusal.
*Marcus Mitchell.*
My husband had been there.
He had known my mother was dying.
And he'd kept me away.
I stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.
"Where is he?""
Daniel rose.
"Lauren—"
"Where is Marcus?""
Attorney Carter closed his briefcase.
"There's something else you need to know. Marcus has already been notified that the original trust documents have been located.""
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of the hotel entrance.
Someone had taken it less than a minute earlier.
Beneath it was a single sentence.
*You should have left the past buried, Lauren. Your mother made that mistake, too.*
Daniel immediately moved toward the curtains.
May you like
And outside, beneath the hotel entrance lights, a familiar black SUV was pulling into the parking lot.
Marcus had found us.
