Chapter 8: The Man in the Photograph
I stared at the envelope.
My father's name had been James Mitchell.
He had died when I was twelve.
He'd taught me to ride a bicycle, repaired my broken toys, and carried me on his shoulders during Fourth of July parades.
He was the only father I'd ever known.
So why had my mother left a document about my real father?
"Emily," I whispered, "what does this mean?""
She looked toward the door.
"I don't know everything.""
"Don't lie to me again.""
"I'm not.""
Daniel took the envelope from my hand.
"Let's open it somewhere secure.""
I shook my head.
"No. I've spent eight years being lied to. I'm done waiting.""
I tore the seal.
Inside was a birth certificate.
My name.
My mother's name.
And a different man's name beneath the heading FATHER.
*Robert Hayes.*
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
Hayes.
Daniel's surname.
I slowly raised my eyes.
"Daniel?""
He looked stunned.
"My father was Robert Hayes.""
The workshop seemed to tilt.
I looked between him and Emily.
"Are you telling me Vanessa's husband is my brother?""
Daniel took the birth certificate.
His hands were trembling.
"I've never heard of you.""
"Neither have I.""
Emily sat on an old wooden chair.
"Mom told me once that Lauren's biological father was someone she'd loved before marrying James. She said he didn't know about the pregnancy.""
"Did she tell you his name?"" I asked.
"No.""
I looked at Daniel.
"How old are you?""
"Thirty-eight.""
"I'm thirty-six.""
He looked at the document again.
"My father died eleven years ago.""
I felt a strange wave of grief.
A father I'd never known.
A brother I'd never met.
And an entire family history hidden from me.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
"I have an old photograph of my father.""
He opened his gallery and showed me.
The man in the picture was standing in front of a brick house, smiling.
I recognized him immediately.
It was the same man holding the newborn baby in my mother's photograph.
I covered my mouth.
"Oh my God.""
Daniel sat down.
"My father had an affair?""
Emily shook her head.
"No. It wasn't like that.""
She looked at me.
"Mom told me she met Robert before she married James. They were young. They loved each other. But Robert's family moved away, and they lost contact.""
"Then why didn't he come back?""
"Because he didn't know you existed.""
I looked down at the birth certificate.
"How did Mom find him?""
Emily pointed to the notebook.
"She must have reconnected with him before she died.""
Daniel turned another page.
There was a handwritten entry.
*Robert has agreed to establish a trust for Lauren. Marcus must never know the full value.*
Daniel stared at the words.
"That explains the account.""
"What account?"" I asked.
He pulled out his phone and called someone.
"James, I need you to check something. Robert Hayes established a private trust in Georgia before his death. I need the beneficiary information.""
He listened.
"Yes. It's urgent.""
I watched him pace the workshop.
Then he stopped.
"You're sure?""
He ended the call.
"What?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
"My father's estate attorney confirmed it. There is a trust established for a daughter named Lauren Mitchell.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"How much?""
Daniel hesitated.
"According to the latest archived statement, the original principal was $3.8 million.""
I sat down.
Three-point-eight million dollars.
My mother hadn't left me just a house.
She had left me a future.
And Marcus had been trying to steal it.
Daniel continued.
"There's something else. The trust was supposed to transfer control to you when you turned thirty-five.""
I stared at him.
"I'm thirty-six.""
"Exactly.""
"Then why haven't I received anything?""
"Because someone filed a legal objection.""
I looked at the documents.
"Who?""
Daniel turned the page.
The objection had been submitted eighteen months earlier.
The person challenging my eligibility was listed as my legal representative.
Emily Mitchell.
My sister.
I slowly turned toward her.
"Emily?""
She started crying.
"Marcus told me the money belonged to him.""
"How could you believe that?""
"He said your mother had promised it to us.""
"Us?""
"He said we'd all be safe if I helped him get control of the trust.""
I stepped backward.
"You signed legal papers claiming I was incapable of managing my own inheritance.""
Emily nodded.
"I thought you'd never find out.""
Daniel looked at the document.
"Unfortunately, the filing was never finalized.""
"Why?""
He pointed to a note attached to the last page.
The court had requested additional medical evidence.
Evidence that Dr. Collins had been preparing.
Everything suddenly connected.
The medication.
The fabricated diagnosis.
The insurance policy.
The procedure scheduled for tomorrow.
They weren't just trying to steal my savings.
They were trying to take control of my entire life.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Mrs. Mitchell, this is Attorney William Carter. I represented your mother.""
My heart raced.
"Why are you calling me?""
"Because I've been trying to reach you for several weeks.""
"Why?""
He paused.
"Your mother left instructions that I should contact you if anyone attempted to challenge your mental capacity or transfer your inheritance.""
I looked at Daniel.
The attorney continued.
"There's an emergency document you need to see. It was sealed until today.""
"What document?""
May you like
His answer made my blood run cold.
"Your mother recorded a video shortly before her death. And in that recording, she identifies the person who tried to kill her.""
