Chapter 3: The Forged Signature

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Richard Hayes.

My brother.

The man who had held my hand at our mother's funeral.

The man who had promised to protect the family trust.

The man who had once told me that money meant nothing compared to family.

His name appeared beneath my forged signature.

I turned the document toward Marcus.

“Who submitted this?””

Marcus exchanged a glance with Daniel.

“An external legal representative filed the preliminary transfer request twelve days ago. Our compliance department blocked it before registration.””

“Who was the representative?””

Daniel checked his notes.

“Richard Hayes's private attorney.””

My fingers tightened around the folder.

Across the room, Ethan had gone strangely quiet.

Too quiet.

I looked directly at him.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head immediately.

“No. Evelyn, I swear I had nothing to do with it.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“That's not true.””

Ethan spun around.

“Shut up!””

But Vanessa was already looking at me.

“Ethan told me the shares would be transferred before the end of the month.””

The ballroom became silent again.

I slowly turned toward her.

“What shares?””

She swallowed.

“Your shares.””

Ethan grabbed her arm.

“Vanessa, stop talking!””

She pulled away.

“You told me everything was arranged! You said Richard had already handled the paperwork!””

My stomach tightened.

Richard hadn't merely witnessed a forged document.

He had apparently helped organize the entire transfer.

I looked at Marcus.

“Get security. Nobody leaves with company documents.””

“Already arranged, Madam Chairwoman.””

Ethan stepped toward me.

“Evelyn, please. Don't listen to her. She's upset because the audit exposed her company.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Your company? You told me it was our future!””

“Not now!””

“You promised me the penthouse! You promised me the shares!””

Several guests began whispering more loudly.

I felt my daughter move beneath my palm.

For a moment, I wished I were anywhere else.

Not because I was afraid of Ethan.

Because I was exhausted.

Eight months of pregnancy. Three years of marriage. Three years of protecting a man who had mistaken kindness for weakness.

And now my own family was involved.

I turned to Marcus.

“Has the transfer been legally frozen?””

“Yes. All related filings are on hold. Our attorneys are preserving the original submission records.””

“Good. I want an independent forensic investigation. No one connected to Richard or Ethan will participate.””

“Understood.””

Ethan approached me again.

“Evelyn, we need to talk about our marriage.””

I looked at him.

“Our marriage?””

“Yes. We've been together for three years. You can't throw that away because of one misunderstanding.””

“One misunderstanding?””

He gestured toward the room.

“People make mistakes. Business is complicated. You don't understand the pressure I've been under.””

I stared at him.

“Did you tell Vanessa I was too ugly to stand beside you?””

He looked away.

“That's not important right now.””

“Did you call our unborn daughter a burden?””

“Evelyn—”

“Did you arrange for my brother to steal my company?””

“I didn't steal anything!””

Vanessa interrupted.

“You said the shares would belong to us!””

Ethan's face turned red.

“I said I would take care of you!””

“You said your wife had already signed!””

The words hit me like a slap.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did you tell her I had signed?””

He said nothing.

Marcus quietly moved closer.

“Madam Chairwoman, I recommend that we conclude the event and move the investigation to our legal offices.””

I nodded.

“Agreed.””

But before I could leave, Daniel approached with a tablet.

“There's one more document you need to see.””

He turned the screen toward me.

It showed an email recovered from the company's executive server.

The subject line read:

*PROJECT NEW DAWN — FINAL OWNERSHIP TRANSFER*

The sender was Ethan Caldwell.

The recipient was Richard Hayes.

The message had been sent six weeks earlier.

I began reading.

Once the transfer is complete, Evelyn will have no voting rights. You can take the holding company, and I'll retain operational control. Vanessa gets her settlement, and everyone gets what they want.

My throat went dry.

There was another sentence beneath it.

The baby complicates things, but Evelyn will be too busy with motherhood to challenge the paperwork.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Ethan had planned this while I was preparing for our daughter's arrival.

He hadn't simply been having an affair.

He had been planning to take everything my mother had left me.

I lifted my eyes.

“Marcus, when was this email sent?””

“Six weeks ago.””

“And the transfer documents?””

“Twelve days ago.””

I nodded slowly.

“Preserve everything.””

Ethan suddenly dropped to his knees.

“Evelyn, please!””

His expensive trousers touched the ballroom floor.

“Think about our daughter! You can't destroy her family!””

I looked down at him.

“You destroyed our family when you decided her mother was someone you could humiliate, deceive, and rob.””

He reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

**Evelyn, don't sign anything else. Richard isn't the only person involved. Your mother knew this would happen.

Check the safe deposit box at First National Bank. Look for the letter dated three days before she died.**

I stared at the screen.

My mother had been dead for four years.

Why would she have left me a letter about this?

Before I could reply, another message arrived.

*And whatever you do, don't tell your brother you've found it.*

I slowly looked toward Marcus.

“Do you know anything about a letter my mother left at First National Bank?””

His expression changed.

May you like

For the first time that evening, the company's most powerful executive looked genuinely alarmed.

“Madam Chairwoman,” he whispered, “I was hoping you would never have to read that letter.””
