Chapter 12: The Secretary Who Knew Too Much
Vanessa's message included an address.
An abandoned office building near the Hudson River.
Marcus immediately objected.
“Absolutely not. This could be a trap.””
I stared at the message.
“She says she has proof.””
“She also says to come alone,” Alexander replied.
“That is exactly what someone would write if they wanted to isolate you.””
I looked at him.
“Then we won't let her isolate me.””
Marcus called two trusted security officers.
Within twenty minutes, we were on our way.
I was exhausted, my back hurt, and my daughter had been unusually active all afternoon.
But I needed answers.
The address led to an old commercial building with boarded windows and a rusted entrance gate.
A single light was visible on the third floor.
Marcus instructed the security officers to remain outside while Alexander and I entered.
We climbed the stairs slowly.
At the end of the hallway, a door stood slightly open.
“Vanessa?”” I called.
A woman emerged.
Her expensive blonde hair was disheveled. Her makeup had run, and she wore a gray sweatshirt instead of the designer dress from the gala.
She looked nothing like the confident secretary who had mocked me.
“Evelyn.””
I crossed my arms.
“You wanted to see me.””
Vanessa looked toward Alexander.
“Who's he?””
“My brother.””
Her face changed.
“Oh my God.””
She stepped backward.
“Then Richard was telling the truth.””
“What truth?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He said Alexander would never come back. He said the original beneficiary was dead.””
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Why would he say that?””
“Because he planned to use your identity to transfer the remaining shares.””
Vanessa reached into her bag and removed a small flash drive.
“I copied everything from Richard's private office.””
I didn't take it immediately.
“Why should I trust you?””
She looked down.
“Because I know what Ethan did, and I know what Richard planned to do to you.””
“You helped them steal three million dollars.””
“I know.””
“You had an affair with my husband.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You laughed when he humiliated me.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.””
I waited.
She finally looked up.
“I'm not asking you to forgive me. I'm asking you to listen.””
She opened her laptop.
The first file contained a recording of Richard speaking to Samuel.
Richard's voice filled the room.
“Once Evelyn gives birth, we'll have the medical report. Helen will certify that she's suffering from complications and can't make decisions.””
Samuel replied, “And the voting rights?””
“Temporary guardianship. Then we transfer everything.””
Vanessa paused the recording.
My hands tightened.
“Keep playing.””
The conversation continued.
Samuel asked, “What about Alexander?””
Richard laughed.
“He doesn't exist as far as the authorities are concerned. If he appears, we'll make sure he disappears again.””
Alexander stepped closer to the laptop.
“Play that again.””
Vanessa did.
His face became pale.
Richard continued speaking.
“Ethan is useful, but he's weak. Once the transfer is complete, I'll give him enough money to leave the country.””
Samuel asked, “And Vanessa?””
Richard laughed again.
“She knows too much. I'll handle her separately.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“That was when I understood I was next.””
I looked at her.
“Why did you stay involved?””
“Because I thought I was going to marry Ethan.””
The answer was so absurd that I almost laughed.
“You thought he would leave me?””
“He promised.””
“He promised me the same thing when we got married.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I know.””
She showed me another file.
It contained bank records, forged transfer authorizations, and an audio recording of Richard speaking to someone else.
This time, the voice wasn't Samuel's.
It was Ethan's mother.
Dr. Helen Caldwell.
“Richard, I have the medical records,” Helen said.
“Evelyn's next appointment is Friday. I'll make sure the report supports the petition.””
Richard replied, “Good. Once the baby arrives, everything becomes easier.””
I felt sick.
Vanessa looked at me.
“There's more.””
She opened the final file.
It was a photograph taken inside a hospital office.
Helen was sitting beside a man I recognized immediately.
Victor Sterling.
The same man from my mother's photograph.
They were exchanging a document.
The date was only three weeks earlier.
Alexander stared at the screen.
“Victor is still alive.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He's been meeting Richard regularly.””
I leaned closer.
“What document?””
Vanessa enlarged the image.
The heading became visible.
*PATERNITY AND SUCCESSION VERIFICATION.*
I frowned.
“Why would Victor need a paternity document?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because Richard told Helen that Ethan wasn't the baby's biological father.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He said the pregnancy was part of a plan. That the child would have a claim to the trust only if certain conditions were met.””
I shook my head.
“That's impossible.””
Vanessa looked toward Alexander.
“Richard said the baby might be connected to the missing twenty-six percent.””
My stomach tightened.
I had never understood why the remaining shares were registered under Alexander's identity.
Now I began to suspect that my daughter's existence was somehow connected to a much older family secret.
Alexander picked up the photograph.
“Who gave Richard this information?””
Vanessa pointed to the bottom of the file.
There was a handwritten note.
*Confirmed by Samuel Whitmore.*
I turned toward her.
“Where is Victor now?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Richard has arranged a private meeting with him tonight.””
“Where?””
She looked at the clock.
“Caldwell Technologies headquarters. The top-floor conference room.””
I checked the time.
8:42 p.m.
“Then we go there.””
Marcus's voice came through my phone.
“Madam Chairwoman, don't move. I've just received information from the police.””
“What information?””
“Richard has called an emergency board meeting. He's presenting a document claiming that your daughter is not Ethan's biological child.””
I froze.
“What?””
Marcus continued.
“And he's brought someone to testify.””
“Who?””
There was a pause.
Then Marcus said:
“Your husband's mother.””
I looked at the photograph of Helen and Victor.
Suddenly, I understood.
This wasn't just about taking my company.
Richard was preparing to destroy my reputation, question my daughter's legitimacy, and use the scandal to strip me of every right I had inherited.
I turned to Alexander.
“Let's go.””
But before we could leave, Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Evelyn, wait.””
Her eyes were filled with terror.
“There's something I haven't told you.””
“What?””
She swallowed.
“The DNA report Richard is planning to reveal tonight...””
She looked at my stomach.
“It's real.””
May you like
My blood ran cold.
“And Ethan isn't the only person who knows who your daughter's biological father is.””
