Chapter 2: The Secret in the Study

Marcus shot to his feet.

“Mom, what are you talking about?””

Evelyn stepped into the living room, her heels clicking against the marble floor. She looked older than she had at Christmas, when she had worn a red velvet gown and smiled through the family photographs.

Now her lips had lost their color.

“Give me the deed,” she said.

Marcus clutched it against his chest.

“Not until someone explains why Dad put the most valuable property in the family in Sarah’s name.””

“Because it was never yours to begin with.””

His face hardened.

“That's ridiculous. Dad told me the mansion would remain with the family.””

“It is remaining with the family,” Evelyn replied.

“Sarah is family.””

Vanessa made an exaggerated sound of disbelief.

“Oh, please. She's his ex-wife. Whatever emotional arrangement your husband made doesn't change the fact that Marcus built his life around this house.””

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Thomas built this house long before you learned how to spell Whitmore.””

Vanessa's cheeks reddened.

Marcus slammed the deed onto the coffee table.

“Enough! Mom, I need a straight answer. Why did Dad secretly transfer the mansion to Sarah?””

Evelyn glanced at me.

There was something in her expression I had never seen before. Regret, perhaps. Or guilt.

“Because he didn't trust what was happening inside this family.””

The room went silent.

Marcus laughed, but the sound was sharp and empty.

“Are you accusing me of something?””

“I'm telling you what your father believed.””

“Then tell me what he believed!””

Evelyn lowered herself into an armchair.

“Six months before he died, Thomas discovered irregular transfers in the company's accounts. Money was moving through shell companies, then disappearing into private investment funds. He initially thought it was an accounting error.””

Marcus folded his arms.

“And?””

“And the amounts kept increasing.””

I watched him carefully.

For eleven years, I had seen Marcus angry, charming, frightened, and arrogant. I had never seen him truly surprised by anything involving the family business.

Now, for a fraction of a second, his eyes flickered toward the hallway.

Evelyn noticed it too.

“Your father hired a private investigator named Caleb Ross,” she continued.

“He wanted to know who was moving the money.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Daniel managed several of those accounts. If there was an error, it was probably his department.””

“Your father thought so at first,” Evelyn said.

“Then Caleb found transfers authorized by someone with access to the executive office.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Who?””

Evelyn reached into her purse and removed a small, worn notebook.

“Thomas kept a record of every suspicious payment he could verify. He didn't trust the company's computer systems anymore.””

Marcus stared at the notebook.

“Give it to me.””

“Not until you've heard the rest.””

“I'm not a child, Mom!””

“No,” Evelyn replied.

“You're a grown man who brought his mistress into his home and demanded that his wife surrender everything she had. I think you can wait thirty seconds for the truth.””

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Stay out of this.””

She immediately stepped away from him.

That tiny movement told me more about their relationship than any confession could have.

Evelyn opened the notebook.

“Thomas believed Daniel was involved in the transfers. But he also suspected someone was protecting him. Someone who could make documents disappear, redirect payments, and convince the board that everything was legitimate.””

Marcus snatched the notebook from her hands.

“Daniel would never steal from Dad.””

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

“Then why did your father write down your brother's name beside nearly four million dollars in unexplained payments?””

Marcus froze.

I rose slowly from the sofa.

“Evelyn, why didn't you tell me any of this before?””

She looked at me with wet eyes.

“Because Thomas asked me to wait until you were safe.””

“Safe from whom?””

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into her purse again and pulled out a folded letter. The paper was yellowed at the edges, and my name appeared on the front in Thomas's unmistakable handwriting.

I recognized the slanted capital S.

He had written my birthday cards every year since Marcus and I married.

“He left this for you,” Evelyn said.

“I was supposed to give it to you if Marcus ever tried to force you out of the mansion.””

Marcus took a step toward her.

“You knew about the deed all these years?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe the house belonged to me?””

“I never told you it did.””

“You allowed me to believe it!””

Evelyn stood.

“Your father wanted you to learn the difference between owning something and deserving it.””

Marcus's face turned crimson.

“You're choosing her over your own son?””

“No,” she said quietly.

“I'm finally refusing to lie for you.””

For a moment, no one moved.

Then Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

“Marcus, I'm not getting dragged into some ridiculous family scandal. You told me the house was yours. You told me the divorce was already arranged.””

“It is arranged,” he snapped.

“Sarah signed the papers.””

I looked at the divorce agreement.

“I signed the documents you put in front of me. That doesn't magically transfer property you don't own.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You said everything was settled!””

“Just wait in the car.””

“Excuse me?””

“Go!””

She snatched her coat from the chair and stormed toward the front door, muttering that she had wasted an entire year of her life.

When the door slammed, Marcus turned on his mother.

“What else did Dad hide?””

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the letter.

“There's one more thing. Caleb discovered that the transfers weren't just financial. Someone had altered records connected to your father's estate.””

Marcus went very still.

“What records?””

“The original company ownership documents. Your father's private correspondence. And a set of papers that explained why he transferred this mansion to Sarah.””

I felt a chill creep up my arms.

“What did the papers say?””

Evelyn opened her mouth.

Before she could speak, Marcus tore the notebook in half.

“That's enough! I'm not listening to another word of this nonsense.””

He threw the pieces onto the table, sending handwritten pages scattering across the marble.

“You're both trying to destroy me because I decided to leave an unhappy marriage.””

I bent to pick up one of the pages.

At the bottom, beneath a list of transfers, Thomas had written a single sentence.

If anything happens to me, Sarah must receive the original file.

I looked up.

“Evelyn, where is the original file?””

Her eyes moved toward the front door.

“Caleb was supposed to bring it tonight.””

A heavy knock interrupted us.

Three slow blows against the oak door.

Evelyn went pale.

Marcus turned toward the hallway.

Then a man's voice called from outside.

“Evelyn? It's Caleb. We need to talk about what Thomas found.””

May you like

Marcus stopped breathing.

Because Caleb Ross had supposedly died eleven years ago.
