Chapter 10: The Test That Changed Everything

“Marcus,” I whispered, “what does she mean?””

He stared at the storage device in my hand.

For eleven years, I had known every expression on his face. I knew the slight crease between his eyebrows when he was calculating a business deal, the way his jaw tightened when he was angry, and the brief downward glance he made whenever he was about to lie.

He was doing all three now.

“Sarah, listen to me.””

“No. You listen to me. Vanessa says you knew about a paternity test.

Richard says it was supposed to have been destroyed. And you're standing there looking like a man who has just watched his worst secret walk into the room.””

Daniel laughed nervously.

“Perhaps we should all calm down.””

Caleb shoved him against the table.

“You've had eleven years to calm down. Start talking.””

Richard adjusted his tie with shaking fingers.

“The test was commissioned privately. Thomas wanted to establish whether Sarah was biologically related to him.””

I felt the room grow colder.

“And the result?””

Richard said nothing.

I turned toward Marcus.

“Tell me.””

He looked at Vanessa, then at his brother.

Finally, he lowered his head.

“The test said you weren't Dad's biological daughter.””

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in my ears.

I had spent my entire life wondering why my mother refused to tell me who my father was. I had imagined an absent soldier, a married businessman, perhaps a man who had simply disappeared when she became pregnant.

Now the Whitmore family was telling me that the one man who had treated me like a daughter might not have been my father at all.

“Then why did he call me his daughter?”” I asked.

Marcus rubbed his face.

“Because he believed you were his daughter when he first found you. The test came later.””

“When?””

“Two years before he died.””

I looked at Richard.

“Who commissioned it?””

“Thomas did.””

“And who received the results?””

Richard hesitated.

“Thomas, myself, and Marcus.””

My stomach twisted.

“You knew.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew two years ago that Thomas might not be my biological father, and you never told me?””

“I was trying to understand what it meant.””

“No. You were trying to understand what it meant for your inheritance.””

He flinched.

I stepped closer.

“Did you ever think about what it meant for me?””

Marcus opened his mouth, but no words came.

Daniel seized the opportunity.

“Sarah, the test settled the question. Thomas had no obligation to leave you anything. Whatever he did was a personal choice, not a legal necessity.””

Caleb turned toward him.

“Then why did you spend millions trying to remove her from the trust?””

Daniel's smile vanished.

Richard answered before he could.

“Because the trust was written to include Sarah regardless of biological parentage. Thomas explicitly named her as his daughter and beneficiary.””

I stared at him.

“So the test didn't matter?””

“Not to the trust.””

“Then why was it hidden?””

Richard looked away.

“Because it changed the family dynamics. Daniel believed Thomas was making an emotional decision that would diminish his sons' inheritance.””

Daniel slammed his fist onto the table.

“That's not true! Thomas was being manipulated by Margaret!””

“Margaret was dead by then,” I said.

He froze.

I watched the realization cross his face.

He had spoken too quickly.

“What did you mean by that?””

Daniel backed away.

“Nothing.””

“You said Margaret was manipulating Thomas. My mother had been dead for years.””

He looked toward Richard.

The lawyer's expression had become one of pure dread.

Caleb picked up the storage device and examined its label.

“There's more on this than a paternity test.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Daniel kept the original report because he thought it would help him challenge the trust. But there are other documents on the device. Payment records, medical bills, and a letter from a private laboratory.””

Caleb connected it to a portable laptop.

A folder appeared on the screen.

Inside were scanned documents dated eleven years earlier, shortly before Thomas's death.

The first was the paternity report.

The second was a payment authorization signed by Richard.

The third was a medical invoice from a private clinic.

I recognized my mother's name.

Margaret Bell.

The invoice listed an experimental cardiac treatment she had supposedly received six months before her death.

But the date was wrong.

My mother had died eight months before the invoice was issued.

I stared at the screen.

“This is impossible.””

Caleb opened the payment authorization.

The invoice had been paid from the private trust Thomas created for me.

Someone had been billing the trust for medical treatment after my mother died.

“Who authorized these payments?”” I asked.

Richard swallowed.

“I did.””

“Why?””

“I was instructed to maintain the account.””

“By whom?””

His gaze moved toward Daniel.

Daniel shook his head furiously.

“Don't you dare.””

Richard's hands trembled.

“By Thomas.””

Caleb leaned closer to the screen.

“Then why does the payment authorization contain Daniel's electronic signature?””

Silence.

Daniel suddenly lunged for the laptop.

Marcus tackled him before he reached it. The two brothers crashed against the table, sending papers flying across the concrete floor.

“You stole from Dad!”” Marcus shouted.

Daniel punched him in the mouth.

“You think you're innocent? You signed the transfers yourself!””

Marcus staggered backward, blood appearing at the corner of his lip.

“What?””

Daniel straightened his jacket.

“You were the executive who approved the payments. I only told you where to sign.””

Marcus stared at him.

I remembered the years I had spent reviewing his business documents, trusting that he understood every line he signed.

Had he truly been unaware?

Or had he simply stopped asking questions because the money kept coming?

Caleb stepped between the brothers.

“Neither of you is leaving until we establish exactly what happened.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You still don't understand, do you? Thomas didn't die because of the missing money. He died because he finally discovered who had been using Margaret's name.””

I felt my breath catch.

“Who?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Your mother had another child before you.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

He smiled, but his eyes were frightened.

“Thomas knew about the first daughter. He'd been paying for her care for years. When he discovered the money was being diverted, he realized someone had been using that secret to control him.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Where is she?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, a gunshot shattered the warehouse window.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Caleb threw me behind the table while Marcus dragged Vanessa down beside him.

When I looked up, Richard was gone.

So was the storage device.

And Daniel was staring at the empty doorway, whispering a name I had never heard before.

“Rebecca.””
