Chapter 8: The Two Million Dollars Were Only the Beginning
I didn't speak for several seconds.
My son had signed a loan agreement using my properties as collateral.
Not a small personal loan.
Not a temporary business expense.
Three million dollars.
"Daniel," I finally said, "did you understand what you were signing?""
"I thought it was a refinancing arrangement.""
"Did you read the agreement?""
"Vanessa said the lawyers had reviewed everything.""
"Which lawyers?""
He hesitated.
"Robert's people.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"Did you receive any money?""
"No.""
"Then where did the money go?""
"I don't know.""
"Daniel, this is not a game.""
"I know, Mom!""
His voice rose.
"Do you think I wanted any of this? Vanessa said we were going to secure the family's future. She said you had already agreed to transfer the properties eventually.""
"Why would I transfer my business to someone else's company?""
"She said you were getting older.""
There it was again.
My age.
The excuse they used whenever I refused to cooperate.
I took a slow breath.
"Daniel, I want you to listen carefully. I never authorized you to borrow money against my properties.""
"I understand.""
"Do you?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you sign?""
He began crying.
"Because I trusted my wife.""
For a moment, I felt sorry for him.
Then I remembered the documents.
The false signature.
The bank account.
The guardianship petition.
The $184,000.
And the two million dollars waiting to disappear.
"Trusting your wife doesn't give you permission to steal from your mother.""
He went quiet.
"I know.""
"Where is the loan money?""
"I think Bennett sent it through Vanessa's company.""
"How much?""
"Three million.""
My knees weakened.
"All three million?""
"That's what the agreement says.""
I gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.
"Daniel, you need to tell Margaret everything.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa will leave me.""
I closed my eyes.
"Your mother is still alive, Daniel. Your wife has put your mother at risk of losing the business she spent her life building. And you're worried she might leave you?""
He didn't respond.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Mom, she told me if the court doesn't approve the conservatorship, Bennett will come after us.""
"Us?""
"Me and Vanessa.""
I felt a wave of disbelief.
"Why would Bennett come after you?""
"Because the loan has personal guarantees.""
I sat down.
"Did you sign those too?""
"Yes.""
"Then you need an attorney immediately.""
"Mom, please. Don't tell Margaret about the guarantees.""
I stared at the phone.
"Daniel, you're asking me to protect you from the consequences of something you did to me.""
"I'm asking you to give me time.""
I ended the call.
Not because I didn't love him.
Because I couldn't keep rescuing a grown man who was helping destroy my life.
The next morning, Margaret arrived with a thick folder.
She placed it on my desk.
"I've reviewed the preliminary loan documents.""
I looked at her.
"Can they seize my properties?""
"Not automatically. The validity of the collateral documents can be challenged, especially if your authorization was forged. But we need to act quickly.""
She opened the folder.
"The two-million-dollar transfer you mentioned is connected to the three-million-dollar loan.""
"How?""
"According to the payment schedule, the two million is intended to cover part of Bennett's outstanding advance. The remaining money has already been distributed.""
I felt sick.
"Distributed to whom?""
"Several accounts. We're tracing them.""
She turned another page.
"There's something more disturbing.""
She showed me a document titled MANAGEMENT AND SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.
It stated that Daniel would take control of the self-storage business once a court-appointed conservator approved the transfer.
Vanessa would manage the financial operations.
Bennett's company would receive a percentage of future property sales.
I stared at the figures.
They had designed an entire structure around taking control of my business.
"When was this prepared?""
"October.""
Two months before Christmas.
I thought about Vanessa laughing when Madison threw my envelope into the fireplace.
She hadn't been laughing at the twenty-dollar bill.
She had been confident that the real money was already arranged.
My phone buzzed.
An email from Madison.
Grandma, I need to tell you something. Mom found out I spoke to you.
A second message followed.
She's furious. She says if I tell anyone what I saw, she'll make sure I never get a cent.
I immediately called her.
She answered in a whisper.
"Grandma?""
"Where are you?""
"In my bedroom.""
"Are you safe?""
"I think so.""
"What happened?""
Madison began crying.
"Mom was on the phone with Mr. Bennett last night. She thought I was asleep.""
"What did you hear?""
"He asked her whether the guardianship hearing was still scheduled.""
I straightened.
"What hearing?""
"She said it was next Thursday.""
Margaret looked up sharply.
I continued.
"What else?""
Madison hesitated.
"Mr. Bennett asked her whether the original will had been destroyed.""
My heart stopped.
"What did your mother say?""
"She told him it was handled.""
I looked at Margaret.
She was already writing.
"Madison, do you know where the original will is?""
"Mom has a copy in her office. But Grandma...""
"What?""
"I saw another document.""
"What document?""
"It had your name on it. Mom said it was the final version. She told Mr. Bennett that once the court approved the guardianship, everything would go to Dad.""
My throat tightened.
"Did you see the beneficiaries?""
"Yes.""
"Who was listed?""
Madison began sobbing.
"Grandma, it wasn't Dad.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then who?""
She whispered:
"Whitmore Property Ventures.""
I ended the call and looked at Margaret.
"How can they change my will without my permission?""
"They can't legally do that," she replied.
"But if they're preparing fraudulent documents, we need to locate every version and establish the chain of custody.""
She gathered her papers.
"Tomorrow, we're going to the courthouse.""
I looked at the clock.
Thursday was six days away.
But before Margaret could leave, my phone rang again.
It was Daniel.
"Mom, I need to see you.""
"Why?""
He sounded terrified.
"Because I found something in Vanessa's office.""
"What?""
He lowered his voice.
"There's a document with your signature on it. And it says you've already been declared mentally incapacitated.""
My blood ran cold.
"That's impossible.""
"I know.""
"Who signed it?""
May you like
Daniel took a shaky breath.
"Robert Bennett.""
