Chapter 10: The Secret Hidden Inside Unit 117

At 6:15 the following morning, Margaret pulled her car into the parking lot of our oldest self-storage facility.

The building looked almost exactly as it had when Frank and I purchased it twenty-eight years earlier.

The faded brick walls needed painting. The security gate had been replaced twice. And the office still had the same little brass bell Frank had installed when we first opened.

I held the key to Unit 117 in my palm.

"Are you sure you want to do this before the hearing?"" Margaret asked.

"Frank left that letter for a reason.""

Daniel stood beside us, looking exhausted.

He'd barely slept.

"Mom, what exactly are we looking for?""

I glanced at him.

"I wish I knew.""

The facility manager, Harold Jenkins, came out of the office.

He was a sixty-year-old man who had worked for Frank before becoming the property's manager.

When he saw me, he smiled.

"Mrs. Whitmore! I wasn't expecting you today.""

"Good morning, Harold.""

He noticed the key.

His smile disappeared.

"Unit 117?""

I nodded.

He looked toward the building.

"Your husband specifically instructed us never to rent that unit.""

I froze.

"Never?""

"Not once. He paid the maintenance fees personally, even after he retired.""

I looked at Margaret.

Frank had kept an entire storage unit empty for years.

"Did he ever tell you why?""

Harold shook his head.

"He just said that if you ever came asking for that unit, I was to give you access immediately.""

My throat tightened.

Frank had anticipated this moment.

Harold unlocked the corridor.

We walked past rows of numbered doors until we reached the far end.

Unit 117.

I inserted the brass key.

The lock turned.

The door rolled upward with a metallic groan.

Inside stood a large steel filing cabinet, three cardboard boxes, and an old wooden desk.

There was also a photograph of Frank and me standing outside our first facility.

I walked toward it.

"Frank, what were you hiding?""

Margaret opened the first box.

It contained original property deeds.

The second held business agreements, financial statements, and correspondence dating back decades.

Then Daniel opened the filing cabinet.

"Mom?""

He pulled out a thick folder.

The label read:

*ROBERT BENNETT — ORIGINAL TRANSACTION RECORDS.*

Margaret took it immediately.

Inside were copies of contracts, bank statements, and handwritten notes.

She read silently for several minutes.

Then her expression changed.

"Eleanor, you need to see this.""

It was an old agreement between Frank and Robert Bennett.

The document showed that Bennett had once attempted to acquire a controlling interest in our original storage facility.

But Frank had refused to sign.

Attached to the agreement was a bank transfer record.

Bennett had apparently received a substantial payment from another investor to purchase our property.

The payment had been made through a company that no longer existed.

"Why did Frank keep all this?"" I asked.

Margaret turned another page.

"Because he may have discovered that Bennett was using fraudulent ownership documents.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret pointed to a signature.

"Look at the name.""

I recognized it immediately.

Frank Whitmore.

But the signature was wrong.

It was the same problem we'd found on my documents.

Someone had copied his name onto a property transfer agreement.

My hands began trembling.

"Frank never signed this.""

"According to the original records, he didn't.""

Margaret pulled out another document.

This one was even more important.

It was a certified property ownership record.

It showed that Frank and I had established a separate holding company decades earlier to protect our first facility.

That company had retained ownership of the land.

The operating business was ours, but the property itself had been placed in a separate legal structure.

I frowned.

"Why don't I remember this?""

Margaret examined the paperwork.

"Because it was part of your original estate and business planning. Frank may have structured it this way after his dispute with Bennett.""

She turned another page.

Then she stopped.

"Eleanor...""

"What?""

"This holding company still exists.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She pointed to the registration.

The company was called Whitmore Family Holdings.

Its ownership records listed Frank and me as equal founders.

After Frank's death, his interest had passed to me under the succession documents.

That meant I controlled the entire company.

And the company owned the land Bennett was trying to use as collateral.

"He can't sell something he doesn't own," I whispered.

Margaret nodded.

"Not legally.""

Daniel looked relieved.

"So the properties are safe?""

"Not necessarily," Margaret replied.

"We still need to investigate the disputed filings and the loan documents.""

I continued searching through the cabinet.

At the very bottom was a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

Inside was a handwritten letter from Frank.

Eleanor,

If Robert has returned, I suspect he has found someone inside our family willing to help him.

My eyes filled.

I never wanted to burden you with the details of what happened years ago. But Bennett once tried to destroy everything we built. I refused to let him.

There is one final document in this unit. It contains the information necessary to prove who truly controls the properties.

I looked inside the envelope.

There was another key.

And a small note.

*SAFE DEPOSIT BOX 441 — FIRST NATIONAL BANK.*

Margaret checked her watch.

"We need to leave. The hearing starts in two hours.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had gone pale.

"Mom?""

"What?""

He pointed toward the open filing cabinet.

There was a photograph tucked behind the final folder.

It showed Robert Bennett standing beside a younger Vanessa.

They were outside our original storage facility.

But that wasn't what frightened Daniel.

He recognized the third person in the photograph.

It was his own father-in-law.

Vanessa's father.

Daniel whispered:

"Mom, Vanessa told me her father died twenty years ago.""

I turned the photograph over.

Frank had written a date on the back.

*Three months before our first property was nearly stolen.*

May you like

And beneath it:

*Bennett's partner. Vanessa's father.*
