Chapter 13: The Boy Who Was Given My Name

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.

The young man in the photograph stood outside a university building, wearing a gray hoodie and carrying a backpack over one shoulder. He looked about my age. His dark hair fell across his forehead, and his eyes were the same warm brown as Rebecca's.

But the name written beneath his picture was mine.

*Ethan Carter.*

I looked at Michael.

“Why does he have my name?””

Michael turned the photograph over again, checking the handwriting.

“I don't know yet.””

Rebecca gripped the arms of her chair.

“Andrew told me the baby had been given a different name. I never knew what it was. I only knew he was alive.””

Noah stood beside her, his face pale.

“Someone took your son, gave him another identity, and threatened you to keep you quiet?””

Rebecca nodded.

“I tried to find him. I really did. But after the attack, I couldn't remember everything clearly. When I finally recovered enough to speak, the police told me there wasn't sufficient evidence to reopen the case.””

Sarah held her sister's hand.

“You should have told me.””

“I wanted to. But I was afraid they'd take him somewhere else.””

Sarah's eyes filled.

“You were my sister. You didn't have to carry this alone.””

Rebecca looked away.

“I thought keeping quiet was the only way to protect him.””

I stared at the photograph.

The young man's face was unfamiliar, but the name made something inside me ache. Somewhere out there was another person who had been assigned an identity by people who believed they had the right to decide who he should become.

I knew exactly what that felt like.

“Where was this picture taken?”” I asked.

Michael examined the background.

“The building sign says Blue Ridge University.””

Noah leaned over his shoulder.

“That's in Asheville.””

“Correct,” Michael replied.

“And the photograph appears recent.””

Rebecca nodded.

“It came with a letter three months ago. There was no return address. The writer said Oliver was safe and had been given a new life.””

“Why would someone send you a photograph but refuse to tell you where he lives?”” I asked.

Rebecca looked at me.

“Because they wanted me to know he was alive without giving me the power to reach him.””

Michael slipped the photograph into a protective sleeve.

“We'll need to establish who sent this. If the young man is using the name Ethan Carter, there may be school or legal records that can help identify him.””

I shook my head.

“Don't contact him without finding out what's going on. If he's been lied to his whole life, the last thing he needs is a stranger showing up and telling him everything he believes is false.””

Michael studied me, then nodded.

“That's a reasonable concern.””

Noah put a hand on my shoulder.

“Look at us, Ethan. We're trying to solve a mystery that started before any of us could speak.””

He looked toward Rebecca.

“Can I ask you something?””

She nodded.

“Did you ever know Daniel before he took Noah?””

Rebecca's face tightened.

“Yes. He was married to Sarah. I knew him as my brother-in-law.””

“And Uncle Andrew?””

“I knew him through the hospital. He helped me when I first came in with Noah.””

Noah frowned.

“Helped you?””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“He told me he would make sure Noah was safe. He said the hospital could arrange a temporary placement until I was able to provide a stable home.””

Her voice cracked.

“I trusted him.””

Sarah squeezed her hand.

“Becky, none of this was your fault.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I should have known something was wrong when he asked me to sign blank forms.””

Michael looked up sharply.

“Blank forms?””

Rebecca nodded.

“He said they were routine documents. He told me the hospital needed them before Noah could be discharged. I signed because I was exhausted and frightened.””

Michael made a note.

“That may explain how the original placement was authorized.””

“And the other baby?”” I asked.

Rebecca looked at the photograph.

“I didn't know about Oliver's disappearance until after Andrew attacked me. By then, both children had been moved, and Daniel was telling everyone that Noah had died.””

I paced toward the window.

The story had become so tangled that I couldn't see where one lie ended and another began.

My father had raised me believing I was his biological son. Noah had been adopted and then secretly transferred to another family. Rebecca's son had disappeared. My mother had spent sixteen years searching for children who had been hidden from her.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, someone had given another boy my name.

“There's something we haven't asked,” I said.

Everyone turned toward me.

“Why would someone choose my exact name for Rebecca's son?””

Michael considered the question.

“Perhaps they wanted to make him difficult to trace. Or perhaps the name was chosen to connect him to the Carter family.””

“Connect him how?””

Michael didn't answer.

Rebecca suddenly looked frightened.

“Andrew said something to me once. He told me that if Oliver ever learned who his father was, everything would fall apart.””

Sarah went still.

“His father?””

Rebecca nodded.

“I never told anyone who Oliver's father was. I didn't want him involved. He was dangerous, and I thought keeping Oliver away from him would protect my son.””

Noah leaned forward.

“Who was he?””

Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.

“I never knew his real name.””

Michael placed the photograph on the table.

“Then we need to find Oliver before anyone else does.””

I looked at the young man in the picture.

For the first time, I wondered whether he was the key to understanding why Daniel and Andrew had gone to such lengths to conceal the truth.

I turned toward Rebecca.

“If we find him, will you tell him everything?””

She nodded.

“Even if he hates me for leaving him?””

“Especially then.””

Rebecca took my hand.

“Thank you, Ethan.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“You don't have to thank me.””

She looked at me with a strange mixture of grief and recognition.

“Your father used to say the same thing.””

My hand went cold.

“Which father?””

Rebecca's expression changed.

“The man who fathered Oliver.””

Michael stopped writing.

Noah slowly straightened.

Rebecca looked from one of us to the other.

Then she whispered the words that changed the investigation completely.

“Daniel Carter isn't Oliver's biological father.””

May you like

She swallowed.

“But the man who is... was the reason Andrew changed all those records.””
