Chapter 10: Room 312

Nobody moved after Michael showed us the hospital record.

Dad stood halfway up the basement stairs, one hand gripping the railing. Noah stared at the phone, his face pale. Sarah held the photograph of Rebecca against her chest, as though the image might disappear if she loosened her fingers.

I was the first to speak.

“Did you carry Noah out of Room 312?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Ethan, you have to understand what was happening that night.””

“I'm asking you a yes-or-no question.””

He looked at Noah.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

Noah took a step backward.

“You carried me out of that hospital while my mother was looking for me?””

Dad gripped the railing harder.

“I didn't know where Rebecca was.””

“You knew she was alive!””

“Yes!””

His shout echoed through the basement.

For the first time, Dad looked less like a man trying to control a situation and more like someone cornered by the consequences of his own choices.

He descended the remaining steps.

“Rebecca came to the hospital that night. She was frightened, exhausted, and convinced someone was trying to take her baby. Andrew had told her that the adoption paperwork was incomplete.””

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

“Because it was incomplete.””

“I know that now.””

“You knew it then,” she replied.

“Your brother told you.””

Dad looked away.

Noah's voice shook.

“Why did you take me?””

Dad rubbed his hands together.

“Andrew told me Rebecca had left the baby outside the hospital. He said she had disappeared and that the authorities would place you in foster care. I thought I could protect you by taking you home.””

“You already had a home for me,” Noah said bitterly.

“I was living with you.””

Dad flinched.

“I know.””

“No, you don't. You sent me away to strangers.””

“Your adoptive parents were good people.””

“They were my parents!”” Noah shouted.

“They loved me. But they were given a child under false pretenses. They deserved the truth, too.””

Michael stepped between them.

“Daniel, we need to establish what happened in Room 312. The original file suggests Rebecca returned to the hospital after you removed Noah.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“She did.””

Sarah gripped the workbench.

“What happened to her?””

Dad looked at her.

“She confronted Andrew. They argued. She accused him of falsifying the adoption records.””

“And you?””

“I had already left with Noah.””

Sarah's voice dropped to a whisper.

“You left my sister alone with your brother after you knew he had lied to her?””

Dad didn't answer.

I watched Sarah's face change. She had spent sixteen years searching for her sons, and now she was discovering that the people responsible for her suffering had been sitting at family dinners, exchanging birthday gifts, and pretending nothing had happened.

“Did you ever see Rebecca again?”” I asked.

Dad hesitated.

“Once.””

“When?””

“Three days later.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Where?””

“At the hospital.””

“What did she say?””

Dad swallowed.

“She asked me where Noah was. I told her he'd been placed with a family who could provide a stable home.””

“You told her where he was?””

“No.””

“Did you tell her he was alive?””

“Yes.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

For a moment, hope flickered across her face.

Then Dad continued.

“She said she would go to the police. Andrew told me that if she did, the adoption would be investigated, and Noah might be removed from the family again.””

“So you threatened her?”” Noah asked.

“No! I tried to persuade her to wait until everything was settled.””

“And what happened?””

Dad stared at the floor.

“Rebecca left. I never saw her again.””

Sarah sank into a chair.

“You let me believe she had abandoned us.””

“I didn't know what had happened to her!””

“But you didn't look,” she whispered.

Dad's silence was answer enough.

Michael gathered the documents into his folder.

“We'll need to verify this against the hospital's original records. But there's another question. The report says a second set of documents was created after the incident.””

He looked at Dad.

“Where are they?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke from the stairs.

“Yes, you do.””

Everyone turned.

She was holding a small plastic storage container.

“I found these in the attic last year. Daniel told me they were old tax records and ordered me to throw them away.””

She placed the container on the workbench.

Inside were several envelopes, a hospital photograph, and a handwritten note bearing Uncle Andrew's signature.

Dad stared at her.

“You kept those?””

“I couldn't bring myself to destroy them.””

Michael carefully opened the first envelope.

It contained a carbon copy of Rebecca's complaint, along with a statement describing the night Noah was removed from Room 312.

But the final page was different.

It was a letter written by Rebecca to Sarah.

Sarah, if anything happens to me, please find my son. His name is Noah. He deserves to know that I didn't abandon him.

Sarah made a strangled sound.

The letter continued.

I have reason to believe Andrew and Daniel are planning to move him again. I don't know why they are so frightened of anyone examining his records. I only know that something about his birth has been hidden from us.

The final sentence was underlined.

If they tell you I disappeared, don't believe them.

Sarah clutched the paper with both hands.

“Rebecca knew.””

Noah stared at the letter.

“Knew what?””

Before Sarah could answer, Michael turned over the photograph in the envelope.

It showed Rebecca standing outside the hospital, holding a newborn baby. Beside her stood a younger Daniel, his face turned away from the camera.

On the back was a date.

November 18.

Beneath it, in Rebecca's handwriting, were six words.

*The child Daniel brought home was not Noah.*

My blood turned cold.

Noah read the sentence twice.

Then he looked at Dad.

“What does that mean?””

Dad staggered backward, striking the basement wall.

For sixteen years, we'd believed there was one secret behind Noah's disappearance.

Now the evidence suggested there had been another child.

Another baby.

And perhaps another mother who had never stopped searching.

Michael carefully placed the photograph on the table.

“We need the second set of birth records,” he said.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Tell them.””

Dad shook his head.

“It's too late.””

“Tell them what happened that night!””

He looked at me, and I saw tears gathering in his eyes.

“The baby I carried out of Room 312 wasn't Noah.””

Noah went completely still.

May you like

Dad's voice broke.

“It was another child.””
