Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Curtain
The photograph was old.
The edges were faded.
But the people in it were clear.
My grandfather stood beside a military vehicle, wearing a suit instead of a uniform.
Next to him was another man.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Smiling.
A man I knew.
A man who had attended every family gathering since I was a child.
Uncle Daniel.
Nobody spoke.
My mother looked at the photograph and immediately started crying.
My father looked like he had aged ten years.
Ryan took a step back.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You know something?””
He shook his head.
“No. I just…”
He stared at the image.
“Uncle Daniel was always around.””
Exactly.
That was the problem.
He was always around.
At birthdays.
At holidays.
At family dinners.
A person doesn’t need to break into your house if you invite them inside.
General Harrison studied the photograph.
“When was this taken?””
My mother answered quietly.
“Before Emily was born.””
The general looked at me.
“Your uncle worked with your grandfather?””
My mother nodded.
“Daniel was young. He admired him.””
I looked at the picture.
“Or he learned from him.””
Nobody liked that answer.
But nobody could deny it.
My father stood.
“This is enough.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means we’re done accusing family members based on a photograph.””
General Harrison looked at him.
“Mr. Hayes—”
“No.””
My father’s voice became louder.
“My brother may have made mistakes, but he is family.””
The words hurt.
Not because he defended Daniel.
Because he had never defended me like that.
Not once.
I looked at my father.
“You believed I was a disappointment for ten years.””
His expression changed.
“Emily.””
“No.””
My voice remained calm.
“You believed every rumor. Every assumption. Every story people told about me.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Isn’t it?””
Silence.
Ryan looked down.
My father had no answer.
I turned back to General Harrison.
“What happens now?””
He handed me another folder.
“Now we find out why someone is trying to connect your grandfather’s work to your operation.””
I opened it.
Inside were mission reports.
Old photographs.
Communication logs.
And one page marked:
RECOVERED DATA.
I read the first line.
My hands tightened.
“Where did you get this?””
The general looked at me.
“It was hidden inside your original mission file.””
I scanned the document.
There it was.
A reference to an unidentified informant.
A person who had provided intelligence before the operation.
Someone who knew the enemy’s location.
Someone who helped plan the extraction.
I looked at the name.
Then everything stopped.
Because the informant was listed as:
DANIEL HAYES.
Ryan whispered:
“Uncle Daniel?””
I couldn’t breathe.
My entire life shifted again.
The man who might have betrayed me was the same person who may have helped save those lives.
Nothing made sense.
General Harrison saw the confusion on my face.
“That’s why this investigation matters.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“Colonel, someone is trying to erase a complicated truth.””
He pointed at the file.
“Daniel Hayes may have been a source.””
He pointed at the photograph.
“He may have been involved.””
Then he looked at me.
“But someone is trying very hard to make sure we never discover which one.””
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
A young officer entered.
“General, we have confirmation.””
Harrison straightened.
“Of what?””
The officer looked at me.
“The person who accessed Colonel Hayes’ records.””
My heart started racing.
“Who?””
The officer hesitated.
Then answered:
“Uncle Daniel Hayes.””
The room exploded into silence.
My mother covered her mouth.
My father sat down.
Ryan looked at me.
“Emily…”
I stared at the door.
Because somewhere out there was the man who knew my family’s secrets.
The man who knew my mission.
The man who had been watching from the shadows.
General Harrison spoke quietly.
“Colonel Hayes, we need to find him.””
I nodded.
But before we could move, my phone rang.
Not a message.
A call.
From an unknown number.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Emily.””
My blood went cold.
“Uncle Daniel?””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“I don’t have much time.””
I stood completely still.
“Where are you?””
His voice dropped.
“Before you trust anyone in that room…”
I looked around.
My family.
The officers.
General Harrison.
Daniel continued:
“…you need to know the truth about who actually betrayed your team.””
The line crackled.
May you like
“Because it wasn’t me.””
Then the call ended.
