Chapter 10: The Code That Should Not Exist

The room changed instantly.

One second, Ryan was standing beside me as my younger brother.

The next, everyone was looking at him through the lens of suspicion.

And I hated it.

Because I knew exactly what it felt like.

To have people decide who you were before hearing the truth.

Ryan looked at General Harrison.

“My records were accessed using Emily’s authorization?””

The general nodded.

“Yes.””

Ryan looked at me.

“Emily…”

I saw the fear in his eyes.

Not fear of being accused.

Fear that I would believe it.

I shook my head.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I didn’t do this.””

“I know.””

Those two words surprised him.

Maybe they surprised everyone.

Because years ago, I might have reacted differently.

I might have believed the evidence before believing the person.

But my entire career had taught me one thing:

Evidence could be manipulated.

People could be framed.

Truth required patience.

General Harrison studied Ryan.

“Lieutenant Hayes, where were you when the access occurred?””

Ryan answered immediately.

“Here.””

“Before that?””

“The ceremony.””

“Your phone?””

“With me.””

“Your identification?””

“In my wallet.””

The general nodded.

“Good.””

Ryan frowned.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

He looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because if someone wanted to frame you, they would want you to panic.””

Ryan glanced at me.

“And you think I’m not?””

General Harrison looked at me.

“No.””

The room became quiet.

Because everyone understood what he meant.

I had spent years learning how people behaved under pressure.

Ryan was scared.

But he wasn’t hiding.

A technician entered holding a tablet.

“General.””

Harrison turned.

“What did you find?””

The technician looked at me.

“The authorization code was not copied.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“It was generated.””

Ryan frowned.

“Generated from what?””

The technician hesitated.

“From an original security key.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt a chill.

“Whose original security key?””

The technician looked at the screen.

“Colonel Hayes.””

My father stepped forward.

“Impossible.””

The technician shook his head.

“No, sir. That’s the problem.””

General Harrison took the tablet.

I watched his expression change.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Your security credentials were activated today.””

I stared.

“They were deactivated years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was only one explanation.

Someone had access to something they should never have had.

My past.

My identity.

My clearance.

My life.

My father looked at me.

“Emily…”

I turned.

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“There is something else.””

My entire body went still.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

I almost laughed.

“Of course there is.””

My father lowered his eyes.

“When you were younger…”

I waited.

“When your grandfather died, Daniel helped your mother organize his belongings.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

“He found something.””

“What?””

My father swallowed.

“A box.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What kind of box?””

He looked at my mother.

She nodded slowly.

“Your grandfather left a message.””

I stared.

“For who?””

My mother looked directly at me.

“For you.””

The room went silent.

Ryan whispered:

“Emily?””

I couldn’t move.

A message.

For me.

From a man who died before I understood the world he lived in.

General Harrison spoke quietly.

“Where is the box?””

My mother hesitated.

Then answered:

“Daniel took it.””

Of course he did.

Everything kept returning to him.

General Harrison immediately turned toward the officers outside.

“Find Daniel Hayes.””

The officers moved.

But before they left, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

No number.

No name.

Just a photograph.

I opened it.

And my blood went cold.

It was a picture of the box.

The same box my mother had just mentioned.

Underneath the image were words:

*YOUR GRANDFATHER LEFT YOU THE TRUTH.*

Another message appeared.

*BUT YOUR FAMILY TOOK IT AWAY.*

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

May you like

Then one final message arrived.

*COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY.*
