Chapter 12: The Commander Who Lied

I stared at the document.

PRIMARY THREAT.

My name.

Not a target.

Not an asset.

A threat.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

He looked exhausted.

“The truth they buried.””

“Explain.””

He walked closer but stopped several feet away.

“Your mission wasn’t considered a failure because you disobeyed orders.””

I held the paper tighter.

“Then why?””

“Because you found something you weren’t supposed to find.””

I looked at the list again.

The names.

The dates.

The signatures.

“What did I find?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You found evidence that the leak came from inside.””

I shook my head.

“I reported that.””

“Yes.””

“To my commander.””

“Yes.””

“And he ignored me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because he was involved.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You don’t want to believe it.””

I didn’t answer.

Because he was right.

My commander had been more than an officer.

He had been my mentor.

The person who pushed me harder than anyone.

The person who believed I could become better.

General Marcus Vale.

The man who taught me leadership.

The man who taught me trust.

The man who taught me never to abandon my team.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel didn’t react.

“I wish I was.””

I looked away.

Because part of me wanted him to be lying.

It would be easier.

If Daniel was the villain.

If my family was the problem.

If everything had one simple answer.

But the world had never been simple.

My phone suddenly rang.

General Harrison.

I answered.

“General.””

His voice was urgent.

“Colonel Hayes, where are you?””

I glanced at Daniel.

“Why?””

“Because we have a problem.””

“What kind?””

A pause.

Then:

“General Vale has been found.””

My grip tightened.

“Found where?””

“Outside the city.””

I waited.

“What happened?””

General Harrison’s voice lowered.

“He was trying to leave the country.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked at me.

He knew.

“He’s running.””

I turned away from him.

“What else?””

The general hesitated.

“There’s more.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me.””

“We searched his property.””

“And?””

“We found files.””

My heart raced.

“What files?””

“Your files.””

The silence was unbearable.

General Harrison continued.

“Colonel Hayes…”

“Yes?””

“The files include reports from your entire career.””

I swallowed.

“Why would he have those?””

Another pause.

Then the answer came.

“Because he wasn’t just watching you.””

I waited.

“He was preparing for you.””

I looked at Daniel.

My uncle’s warning suddenly made sense.

The enemy wasn’t trying to destroy my past.

They were preparing for my future.

General Harrison continued.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“We found a letter.””

“From Vale?””

“Yes.””

“What did it say?””

The general was silent.

Then:

“It was addressed to your family.””

My heart stopped.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then at the old box.

Then at the letter from my grandfather.

Everything connected.

But I still didn’t know how.

“What did the letter say?””

General Harrison’s voice became quiet.

“Colonel Hayes…”

“What?””

“The letter said your family was never supposed to know you became a soldier.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

A long silence.

Then he answered:

“It means someone planned your entire career before you ever joined.””

I felt cold.

Because suddenly my life didn’t feel like a choice.

It felt like a mission assigned before I knew I was part of it.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

He spoke softly.

“There’s something your grandfather wanted you to know.””

“What?””

Daniel pointed at the letter.

“The reason you were chosen…”

I stared.

“Chosen?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because you weren’t the only Hayes who knew the truth.””

I waited.

May you like

He whispered:

“Your mother did too.””
