Chapter 8: The Man Who Paid to Keep Me Away
Sophie read the name on the receipt three times.
Then she pushed the phone away as if it had burned her.
“Richard?””
I nodded, unable to speak.
The man who had stood beside Vanessa at graduation. The man who had paid Sophie's college deposit and bought her first car. The man who had looked uncomfortable when Vanessa humiliated me in front of the other parents.
He had paid my lawyer twelve years ago.
I stared at the receipt.
The amount was $75,000.
It was more money than I had earned in an entire year back then.
Beneath the transfer details was a reference number and a brief description: Settlement consultation.
There was no explanation of what the money was for.
But Thomas's message had made the implication impossible to ignore.
“Dad,” Sophie whispered, “why would Richard do that?””
“I don't know.””
“He didn't even know me twelve years ago.””
That was the part I couldn't understand.
Vanessa hadn't married Richard until Sophie was a teenager. If he had paid Thomas when Sophie was six, then either the transfer had nothing to do with the custody case, or there was something much bigger happening behind the scenes.
I called Thomas again.
He didn't answer.
I sent a message demanding an explanation, but nothing came back.
Sophie paced the living room, her graduation gown still draped over the sofa.
“I want to call him.””
“Let's wait until we understand what we're looking at.””
“Why? Everyone keeps telling me to wait. Mom told me to wait before asking questions.
Thomas won't answer. Now you want me to wait?””
She stopped in front of me, her eyes shining.
“I've waited eighteen years, Dad.””
I stood.
“You're right.””
Her expression softened slightly.
“I won't tell you to wait for the truth. But I don't want you walking into another situation where someone can manipulate you.””
She looked down at the phone.
“Then let's ask him together.””
I agreed.
Richard answered on the first ring.
“Daniel?””
“Richard, we received a bank transfer receipt from Thomas Whitaker. It shows you sent him seventy-five thousand dollars twelve years ago.””
Silence.
Then Richard said, “Where did you get that?””
“From Thomas.””
Another pause.
“Did he tell you what it was for?””
“No. That's why I'm calling.””
Richard exhaled slowly.
“I need to speak to you both in person.””
Sophie took the phone from my hand.
“Richard, did you pay my father's lawyer to keep him away from me?””
His voice softened.
“Sophie, I never wanted you to be hurt.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“No,” he admitted.
“It isn't.””
“Then answer the question.””
He was silent for several seconds.
Finally, he said, “Yes. I transferred money to Thomas Whitaker.””
Sophie closed her eyes.
“Why?””
“I'll explain everything when we meet.””
“Today.””
“Tomorrow morning.””
“Today, Richard.””
He sighed.
“Fine. I'll come to Daniel's apartment in an hour.””
When the call ended, Sophie sat down beside me.
“He paid the lawyer,” she whispered.
“The man who bought me my first car paid the man who helped take you away from me.””
I wanted to reassure her, but I couldn't.
An hour later, Richard arrived alone.
He wore a dark gray suit and carried a thin leather briefcase. He looked older than he had at graduation, his face drawn and his eyes bloodshot.
Sophie didn't invite him to sit.
“Tell us everything.””
Richard placed the briefcase on the table.
“I met Vanessa twelve years ago, but I knew her before then. We worked in the same industry, and I had been interested in her for years.””
Vanessa had told me Richard was a recent acquaintance when we divorced. Apparently, that was another half-truth.
“I wasn't romantically involved with her at the time,” he continued.
“But I knew she was struggling financially. She had told me that her ex-husband was trying to take Sophie away and that a man named Michael was threatening to claim paternity.””
“Why did you care?”” I asked.
Richard looked at Sophie.
“Because I cared about Vanessa. And because I believed she was in danger of losing the only person she had left.””
“So you paid my lawyer?””
“I paid Thomas to arrange a private settlement.””
“What settlement?””
Richard opened his briefcase and removed a copy of a contract.
The first page stated that he had agreed to provide financial assistance in exchange for the resolution of the custody dispute.
The second page was more troubling.
It required Thomas to ensure that I did not pursue further legal action against Vanessa.
My signature appeared nowhere on it.
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“I was told the money would cover legal expenses and provide financial stability for Sophie. Thomas assured me that you had agreed to withdraw your claim.””
“You never asked me?””
“No. I believed the lawyer was handling it properly.””
“You paid seventy-five thousand dollars without speaking to the father whose custody case you were funding?””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you bought a result you wanted without caring whether it was legal.””
He nodded.
“I won't pretend otherwise.””
Sophie pulled the contract closer.
“Why did you help Mom before you were even married?””
Richard looked at her for a long moment.
“Because I thought I was saving someone I loved from losing her child.””
“And what about the child?””
He had no answer.
She turned the page.
A handwritten clause appeared near the bottom.
The biological father's claim must be resolved before the proposed guardianship arrangement can proceed.
Sophie frowned.
“What guardianship arrangement?””
Richard stiffened.
I noticed immediately.
“Richard?””
He closed his eyes.
“There was a plan to establish a trust for Sophie's education and future expenses. Vanessa wanted me to become her legal guardian eventually.””
“But you never adopted me,” Sophie said.
“No. The legal arrangements became complicated.””
She tapped the clause.
“This says the biological father's claim had to be resolved first. Did you know Michael had filed a paternity claim?””
Richard nodded.
“I knew there was a dispute. I was told Michael had abandoned the case.””
“By whom?””
“Thomas.””
Sophie looked at me.
“So Thomas lied to Richard, too?””
“Maybe,” I said.
“Or Richard knew more than he's telling us.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“I understand why you don't trust me.””
“Then stop asking us to.””
He accepted the rebuke without protest.
“I deserve that.””
He took a folded document from his briefcase.
“There is one more thing. Thomas sent me this last month. He said he was closing his old files and wanted to confirm that I still had the original settlement agreement.””
“Why would he contact you now?”” I asked.
Richard looked frightened.
“Because he said someone had started asking questions about the custody case.””
Sophie leaned forward.
“Who?””
Richard slid the document across the table.
It was a letter addressed to him, dated six weeks earlier.
The final paragraph read:
Given the possibility that the original judgment may be reopened, I strongly recommend that all parties preserve their records. I am no longer willing to carry the full responsibility for decisions made at your direction.
I looked up.
“Thomas is blaming you.””
Richard nodded.
“He says I told him to make sure you never regained custody.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
His answer came too quickly.
Sophie stared at him.
“Richard, if you want any chance of being part of my life after this, don't lie to me.””
He looked at her, then at me.
Finally, he whispered, “I never wanted Daniel to lose his daughter. I wanted Vanessa to keep custody until the paternity issue was resolved.””
“Then why did the final judgment say I had surrendered my rights?””
Richard's hands trembled.
“Because Thomas told me the judge would never approve the arrangement otherwise.””
I felt sick.
“You knew the court had been given false information?””
“I suspected something wasn't right. I didn't know the details.””
Sophie stood abruptly.
“You all made decisions about my life as if I were a piece of property.””
Richard looked devastated.
“I know.””
“No, you don't. You don't know what it felt like to think Dad had abandoned me. You don't know what it felt like to believe I wasn't worth staying for.””
He stood too, but kept his distance.
“I can't undo that.””
“No. You can't.””
He gathered his documents slowly.
Before leaving, he turned to me.
“Daniel, Thomas has a meeting scheduled tomorrow with someone else involved in this case. He told me I should attend, but he wouldn't tell me who the person was.””
“Did he give you a name?””
Richard nodded.
He reached into his briefcase and handed me a small card.
Written on it were two words.
*Michael Bennett.*
Sophie stared at the card.
“Michael is meeting Thomas?””
Richard nodded.
“And there's something else you should know. Thomas said Michael has evidence that could change everything.””
“What evidence?”” I asked.
Richard hesitated.
“He claims he has a recording from the week the custody judgment was changed.””
Sophie grabbed my arm.
“A recording of what?””
Richard looked toward the door.
“A conversation between Vanessa and Thomas.””
May you like
Then he lowered his voice.
“He says it proves they both knew the court order was never supposed to be changed.””
