Chapter 7: The Lawyer Who Sold My Silence

I read the handwritten note until the words stopped looking like words.

The father has agreed to withdraw his claim. Do not contact him further.

Beneath it was the signature of Thomas Whitaker, the attorney I had trusted twelve years earlier.

For a long moment, I couldn't hear anything except the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“You said you never opened this letter.””

“I didn't.””

“But you knew about the second document.””

“I knew something had been filed. Thomas called me after the hearing and said the matter was resolved.””

“Resolved how?””

She rubbed her forehead.

“He said you had changed your mind. He told me you understood that Sophie would have a better life with me.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Did you speak to me? Did you call to ask whether I'd agreed to give up my daughter?””

Vanessa looked away.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I didn't want you changing your mind.””

The honesty of that answer was worse than another lie.

Sophie stood beside the kitchen counter, holding the graduation diploma against her chest.

“So you didn't know whether Dad had agreed?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I believed Thomas.””

“And you were happy to believe him because it meant you got what you wanted,” Sophie said.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I was twenty-eight years old. I was terrified. Michael was threatening to take you, Daniel was fighting for custody, and I thought I was about to lose everything.””

“You didn't lose me,” Sophie replied.

“You kept me. You just made me believe nobody else wanted me.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

I wanted to feel triumphant. For years, I had imagined discovering proof that would finally vindicate me.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

The truth was arriving in pieces, and every piece seemed to reveal another way my daughter and I had been hurt.

“I want to speak to Thomas,” I said.

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“You can't just accuse him of something like this.””

“I'm not accusing him. I'm asking him to explain why his signature appears on a document saying I withdrew my custody claim when I never did.””

“He's a respected attorney.””

“So was he when I hired him.””

I picked up my phone and searched for his office number.

The receptionist answered after three rings.

“Whitaker Legal Group. How may I direct your call?””

“My name is Daniel Carter. Thomas Whitaker represented me in a custody case twelve years ago. I need to speak with him urgently.””

There was a pause.

“Mr. Carter, Mr. Whitaker is no longer practicing law.””

“Where can I reach him?””

“I'm afraid I can't provide personal information.””

I gave her the case number and explained that I had obtained documents bearing his signature that appeared to contain false information.

Her tone changed.

“Please hold.””

I waited, listening to the soft music playing through the phone.

Finally, a man's voice came on the line.

“Daniel?””

I recognized it immediately.

“Thomas.””

“I was wondering when you'd call.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“You were expecting me?””

“Not today. But I always knew you might eventually find the paperwork.””

Sophie looked at me.

Vanessa went completely still.

I lowered the phone slightly, making sure everyone could hear.

“Did I ever sign a statement withdrawing my custody claim?””

Silence.

Then Thomas sighed.

“No.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

“Did I tell you to withdraw the claim?””

“No, Daniel.””

“Then why does the court file say I did?””

“I made a serious mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“I was under enormous pressure at the time. There were complications involving Vanessa, Michael, and the custody proceedings. I believed the situation would become worse if the case continued.””

“Worse for whom?””

He didn't answer.

I felt anger rising through me, slow and hot.

“You were my lawyer. You were supposed to protect my daughter and me.””

“I know.””

“You knew I wanted custody.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I was working two jobs to pay you.””

His breathing grew uneven.

“Yes, I remember.””

“Then tell me what you did.””

Thomas was silent for so long that I thought he had hung up.

Finally, he spoke.

“Someone offered me money to make the custody dispute disappear.””

Vanessa staggered backward and grabbed the counter.

Sophie whispered, “Oh my God.””

I stared at the phone.

“Who paid you?””

“I can't discuss that without reviewing the files.””

“You just admitted someone paid you.””

“I said someone offered me money. Daniel, I need to see the original documents before I say anything more. There are details you don't know.””

“Then tell me where to find you.””

He gave me an address in Marietta and agreed to meet the following afternoon.

Before hanging up, he said something that made the room go cold.

“Daniel, whatever you do, don't assume Vanessa was the only person trying to keep you away from Sophie.””

The call ended.

Sophie looked at me.

“Who else would want to keep you away?””

I had no answer.

Vanessa sank into a chair.

“Daniel, I swear I didn't pay Thomas.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know someone else had?””

“No.””

“Did you know he had lied to the court?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than her answer could have.

“Vanessa.””

“I knew he had handled something privately. I didn't know exactly what he'd done.””

“You knew enough not to ask.””

She covered her face.

Richard had been listening from the doorway. He had arrived ten minutes earlier but had remained silent while the call unfolded.

Now he stepped into the kitchen.

“Vanessa, I need you to come home with me.””

She looked up.

“Richard, please.””

“No. I need time to understand who I've been married to.””

He picked up the leather folder and handed it to Sophie.

“These belong to you. Make copies, and give the originals to your attorney.””

Sophie nodded.

Then Richard turned to me.

“I'll arrange for my lawyer to attend the meeting with Thomas tomorrow, if you want.””

I shook my head.

“Thank you, but I'll handle it with my own counsel.””

He accepted that.

Vanessa stood and approached Sophie.

“Sweetheart, I know you're angry, but please don't let this destroy our family.””

Sophie stared at her.

“You destroyed my family when you made me think Dad didn't want me.””

Vanessa reached for her hand.

Sophie pulled away.

“Please go, Mom.””

For once, Vanessa didn't argue.

She walked out with Richard, leaving the apartment so quiet that I could hear the clock ticking above the stove.

Sophie sat down beside me.

“Dad, what if Thomas tells us someone else paid him?””

I looked at the handwritten note.

“Then we'll find out who.””

She took my hand.

“And what if it's someone we know?””

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from Thomas Whitaker.

There was no greeting, no explanation, only one sentence and an attachment.

Before we meet tomorrow, you need to know who paid me.

I opened the attachment.

It was a bank transfer receipt dated twelve years earlier.

The sender's name was clearly visible.

May you like

*Richard Hale.*

Sophie's stepfather.
