Chapter 8: Vanessa's Last Name Was Never an Accident

At 8:20 p.m., I received a message from Vanessa.

*James, I need to see you alone. I know what Michael did to your father. And I know why Richard married me.*

I read it three times.

Then I called her.

She answered immediately.

"James?""

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Is Richard there?""

"No.""

"Meet me somewhere public.""

She hesitated.

"There's a diner on Peachtree Street. Twenty minutes.""

I arrived first.

The place was nearly empty, with an old jukebox humming softly near the counter.

Vanessa entered wearing jeans and a gray sweater. Gone were the designer gowns, diamonds, and confident smile.

She looked exhausted.

She slid into the booth across from me.

"Thank you for coming.""

"Start talking.""

She wrapped both hands around a cup of coffee.

"Michael told me everything about your father's secret family.""

I stared at her.

"How long have you known?""

"Since I married Richard.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She lowered her eyes.

"Three years.""

I leaned back.

"Three years?""

"Michael introduced Richard and me. He said Richard could help me build a new life.""

"And what did he want in return?""

She looked toward the window.

"Access to you.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Explain.""

"Michael knew I had been married to you. He believed I could get close enough to discover where your father kept the original documents.""

I almost laughed.

"You married Richard because Michael wanted my father's papers?""

"No. I married Richard because I thought I loved him.""

She looked up.

"At first, I didn't know about the plan.""

"Then when did you find out?""

"Six months after our wedding. Michael came to our house with a folder. He showed me documents proving that your father had another son.""

I studied her face.

"And that changed everything?""

"Yes. Michael told me you had stolen his inheritance. He said your father had promised him half the property, but you had hidden the will.""

"That's a lie.""

"I know that now.""

I watched her carefully.

"Why did you sign the charity transfer?""

She began crying.

"Richard told me the money was being moved temporarily. He said it would be returned before the audit. Then Michael told me the transfer needed to be connected to your company.""

"So you helped frame me.""

"I thought they would only damage your reputation. I didn't know they were planning to involve Emily.""

I stared at her.

"Did you know about the photographs?""

She nodded.

"Richard showed them to me.""

I felt a wave of anger.

"And you said nothing?""

"He threatened me.""

"With what?""

She took a deep breath.

"With my birth certificate.""

I frowned.

"What does your birth certificate have to do with anything?""

Vanessa looked at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered, "My father was Edward Grant.""

I stopped moving.

The coffee machine hissed behind the counter.

A waitress laughed near the kitchen.

But all I could hear was Vanessa's voice.

"You're telling me you're Michael's niece?""

She nodded.

"Edward was my biological father. My mother was his secretary. He supported us privately, but he never acknowledged me publicly.""

I looked at her.

"And Richard?""

"He knew. Michael introduced us because Richard wanted access to the Whitmore properties. Edward had promised to leave him a share of the development company.""

I shook my head.

"This family tree is becoming a criminal organization.""

Vanessa didn't smile.

"Michael told Richard that if he married me, he would eventually gain control of the properties Edward had promised to our family.""

"And you agreed?""

"I didn't know the entire plan.""

"Yet you signed the documents.""

She looked down.

"I was desperate to belong somewhere. Edward never treated me like his daughter. Richard made me feel important. Michael told me I could finally have what was taken from me.""

I stared at her.

"Do you understand what you helped them do?""

She nodded through tears.

"I know.""

I reached into my jacket and removed a printed copy of the charity transfer.

"Where did the $280,000 go?""

Vanessa examined the document.

"Richard transferred it to an offshore account.""

"Whose account?""

"Michael's.""

I looked at her.

"Do you have proof?""

She nodded.

"I copied the transaction records.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small USB drive.

"Everything is here. The transfers, the emails, the recordings, and the original instructions from Michael.""

I didn't take it immediately.

"Why give this to me now?""

"Because Richard told me something tonight.""

"What?""

"He said once the original papers were recovered, Michael planned to eliminate every person who knew about the arrangement.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Did he say who?""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Me. You. And Emily.""

I took the USB drive.

"Did you tell the police?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

She looked at me.

"Because Michael has someone inside the police department.""

I stared at her.

"Who?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know his name. But Richard said the officer assigned to the charity investigation was already being paid.""

I immediately called Robert.

"Where are you?""

"At the hotel, sir.""

"I need you to preserve a USB drive and arrange an independent forensic examination. Don't connect it to our company network.""

"Understood.""

I ended the call.

Vanessa reached across the table.

"James, there's something else.""

I looked at her hand.

"What?""

"Michael has the original property agreement.""

My stomach tightened.

"How?""

"He took it from your office two nights ago. He had someone make a copy of your access card.""

I stood up.

"Who?""

Vanessa looked terrified.

"Your executive assistant.""

I froze.

"Susan?""

She nodded.

"She gave Michael access to your office.""

I stared at her.

Susan had worked for me for eleven years.

She knew my daughter's birthday.

She knew where I kept my father's photographs.

She had been at my wedding to Vanessa.

"Why would she do that?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because Michael promised her something.""

"What?""

She looked directly into my eyes.

"Ten million dollars.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Robert appeared.

*URGENT: WE JUST REVIEWED THE COMPANY SERVER. SUSAN MILLER HAS DELETED EVERY FILE RELATED TO YOUR FATHER'S ESTATE.*

Then another message arrived.

*SHE'S CURRENTLY INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She whispered, "James, don't go home.""

But I was already moving.

Because inside my house was something Michael hadn't managed to steal.

May you like

My father's original letter.

And if Susan found it, I might lose the only evidence capable of exposing the entire conspiracy.
