Chapter 10: The Box That Could Destroy Two Families

"Drive faster!""

Robert accelerated through the intersection, narrowly avoiding a delivery truck.

I kept calling Emily.

Straight to voicemail.

Every second felt like an hour.

"Robert, how far?""

"Six minutes, sir.""

"She doesn't have six minutes.""

I called the emergency number again and gave them the building address. Then I sent the photograph to Robert.

He glanced at it.

"That's Richard Whitmore.""

"Yes.""

"Wasn't he supposed to be cooperating with the investigation?""

"Apparently, he has other plans.""

Robert tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"Mr. Carter, there's something you should know. We received information about a second vehicle following Emily's car earlier today.""

I turned toward him.

"Why wasn't I told?""

"We couldn't confirm who owned it.""

"Who did?""

"Whitmore Consulting.""

I looked back at the photograph.

Richard wasn't improvising.

He had planned this.

When we reached Emily's office building, the main entrance was open. Two security guards were lying beside the reception desk.

Both were conscious, but one had blood running down his forehead.

"Where is she?"" I demanded.

The older guard pointed toward the elevators.

"Twenty-third floor. Two men took her upstairs.""

Robert immediately called the police.

I ran toward the elevator.

The doors opened.

Inside stood a young man wearing a gray hoodie.

He looked at me.

Then he looked at Robert.

And he ran.

One of the security officers caught him before he reached the stairwell.

"Who sent you?"" Robert demanded.

The man said nothing.

I grabbed his jacket.

"Where's my daughter?""

He swallowed.

"Top floor.""

"Who has her?""

"Whitmore.""

I released him and ran.

The twenty-third floor was almost empty. Office lights flickered behind glass doors.

Emily's office stood at the end of the corridor.

The door was open.

Richard was standing beside her desk.

Emily sat in a chair, her wrists tied with plastic restraints.

The wooden box was on the desk.

"Get away from her!""

Richard turned.

For a brief moment, genuine surprise crossed his face.

Then he smiled.

"James. I was wondering when you'd arrive.""

I moved toward Emily.

"Are you hurt?""

She shook her head.

"I'm okay, Dad.""

Richard placed one hand on the wooden box.

"Not so fast.""

I stopped.

"What do you want?""

"The trust documents.""

"You already have the property agreement.""

"That's not enough.""

He tapped the box.

"Your father was a very careful man. He kept the original trust deed here, along with something far more valuable.""

I stared at the box.

"What?""

Richard smiled.

"The recorded declaration of ownership.""

I frowned.

He continued.

"Your father didn't simply create a family trust. He transferred the controlling interest of the entire property portfolio into it. The trust owns the land beneath eleven Carter Automotive dealerships.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"That's impossible.""

"Read the documents.""

He opened the box.

Inside were several old envelopes, a small cassette recorder, and a thick legal document bearing my father's signature.

Richard pulled out the document.

"Your father made sure that neither you nor Michael could sell those properties without the trustee's approval.""

I looked at Emily.

"And the trustee is my daughter.""

Richard nodded.

"Exactly.""

Emily lifted her chin.

"Grandpa didn't leave you anything.""

Richard slapped the desk.

"Don't be stupid. Your grandfather left you control of an empire you don't understand.""

"I understand enough to know you're trying to steal it.""

Richard's expression darkened.

I stepped closer.

"Let her go.""

"Give me the trust deed.""

"No.""

He looked at Emily.

"Then your daughter is going to have a very difficult evening.""

Before he could move, Robert appeared in the doorway with two officers.

"Richard Whitmore! Step away from the desk!""

Richard froze.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

One officer moved toward Emily while the other restrained Richard.

I rushed to my daughter and cut the plastic restraints with a pocketknife.

She threw her arms around me.

"Dad, I'm sorry.""

"Don't you dare apologize.""

She began crying.

"I think I know why Grandpa left this to me.""

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

She pointed toward the wooden box.

"There's a letter underneath the recorder.""

I lifted the cassette recorder and found a sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

The handwriting was unmistakably my father's.

I opened it.

James,

If you are reading this, the people who tried to take everything have finally reached the one person I trusted to protect it.

I chose Emily because she has something you and I sometimes forget.

She knows the difference between being powerful and being decent.

My eyes burned.

I continued reading.

But there is one more thing you must understand.

The trust was not created to protect our money.

It was created to protect the truth about what happened to me.

I looked at the cassette recorder.

There was a handwritten label.

*HOSPITAL — FINAL CONVERSATION — 11:42 P.M.*

My hands trembled.

"Robert, secure this box. Nobody touches anything.""

Richard suddenly started shouting.

"That recording is fake!""

I turned toward him.

"You haven't even heard it.""

He stopped.

And that was when I realized something.

Richard knew exactly what was on the tape.

I picked up the recorder.

Pressed PLAY.

And heard my father's voice for the first time in eighteen years.

"James, if you're hearing this, Michael has probably told you I'm dead.""

A second voice answered.

"He's not going to hear anything, Edward.""

I stopped breathing.

It was Edward Grant.

Then my father's voice returned.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

Edward laughed.

"No, old friend. The mistake was trusting your sons.""

A door slammed.

And then came a sentence that made Richard turn completely pale.

"Michael, take the documents. We have to finish this before the doctor comes back.""

The recording continued.

But the next voice wasn't my father's.

It was Michael's.

May you like

And he said something I would never forget.

"Father, what do you want me to do with James?""
