Chapter 8: The Night He Came Back

I didn't speak for several seconds.

Mark's breathing crackled through the phone.

“Claire? Are you there?””

“Yes.””

“Vanessa says she can prove everything.””

“Then let her.””

“She's coming to my house tonight.””

“That's between you and Vanessa.””

“Please, Claire. You need to hear this.””

I looked at the folder in my hands.

“You've spent four years keeping secrets from me. I'm done listening to you explain them one at a time.””

“I deserve that,” he said quietly.

“But the boys deserve the truth.””

That was the first sensible thing he'd said since the shower.

I agreed to meet him at a lawyer's office the following afternoon, provided Natalie came with me and Emily was present.

He accepted immediately.

When I arrived, Mark was already seated at a conference table. He looked exhausted. His suit was wrinkled, and his eyes were bloodshot.

Emily sat beside him, keeping several inches of distance between them.

A family attorney named Rachel Morgan had agreed to facilitate the conversation. She'd advised everyone not to make accusations beyond the evidence and to preserve the documents.

Natalie sat beside me.

Mark looked at me.

“Thank you for coming.””

“Let's get to the point.””

He nodded.

“Vanessa called me last night. She said she could explain the test results, the altered files, and why I came to your house after the divorce.””

“Then explain.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“After the first fertility treatments failed, I was terrified. I couldn't imagine a life without children. Vanessa told me she knew someone who could review my results privately.””

“Vanessa worked at our clinic,” I said.

“She already had access to them.””

“I know that now.””

“You knew she was interested in you.””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

Emily let out a bitter laugh.

“You told me she was an old family friend.””

“She was.””

“She was also the woman you were seeing before you divorced Claire?””

Mark looked at her.

“I never slept with her while we were married.””

“That wasn't my question.””

He said nothing.

Rachel intervened.

“Mark, please answer directly.””

Mark swallowed.

“We were emotionally involved before the divorce. I told myself it wasn't an affair because I hadn't made a physical commitment.””

Emily stared at him in disbelief.

“You were planning a future with her while telling your wife she was defective?””

“I didn't know the results had been altered at first.””

“When did you find out?””

He looked at me.

“Six weeks before the divorce was finalized.””

The room went silent.

“You knew,” I whispered.

“I knew the doctor disagreed with what Vanessa had told me. I didn't know how much she'd changed.””

“Did you confront her?””

“Yes.””

“And what did she say?””

Mark stared at his hands.

“She said the original tests showed I might never father children naturally. She told me the doctor was trying to protect you from the truth because you were emotionally unstable.””

I felt sick.

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to believe her.””

The distinction was small.

It was also meaningless to the woman who had suffered because of it.

Mark continued.

“Vanessa told me she had arranged further testing. She said there was a treatment that could improve my chances. She wanted me to divorce you before we pursued it.””

Emily stood abruptly.

“So you were planning to have a child with Vanessa?””

“No! I never agreed to that.””

“But you were seeing her.””

“Yes.””

“And you kept it secret.””

Mark looked down.

“Yes.””

Emily walked to the window.

I watched her shoulders rise and fall as she tried to control her breathing.

Rachel turned back to Mark.

“What happened the night you collected your belongings from Claire's house?””

Mark closed his eyes.

“I went there to retrieve my boxes. But I also wanted to see Claire one last time.””

“Why?””

“Because I still loved her.””

I felt no satisfaction hearing it.

Love had become an excuse people used when they didn't want to take responsibility for what they'd done.

Mark continued.

“Vanessa had told me she was planning to move to Columbus. She said if I wanted a family with her, I had to make a decision. I went to Claire's house confused and angry.””

“And then?”” Rachel asked.

“We talked. We remembered our marriage. I stayed longer than I intended.””

“Did you plan to sleep with Claire?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did you?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was weak. Because I missed you. Because for a few hours, I wanted to pretend I hadn't destroyed everything.””

I remembered that night.

The kitchen light.

His gray sweater.

The quiet conversation that had made the years between us feel temporarily smaller.

“You could have told me the truth,” I said.

“I know.””

“You could have told me about the test results.””

“I know.””

“You could have told me about Vanessa.””

He nodded, tears slipping down his face.

“I know.””

“And instead, you left me with nothing but the belief that my body was broken.””

He covered his face.

“I am sorry.””

For years, I had imagined hearing those words.

I had imagined they would heal something.

They didn't.

Rachel opened the folder Dr. Reeves had provided.

“There's one issue we haven't addressed. The evidence suggests Vanessa had access to both patient records. We need to establish whether she altered them herself or whether someone assisted her.””

Mark looked up.

“She told me she didn't change anything.””

“Then why did she send you an email saying she'd handled Claire's file?”” Natalie asked.

Mark went pale.

“What email?””

I slid the printed copy across the table.

He read it, and his hands began to shake.

“I've never seen this.””

Rachel examined the page.

“We'll need to authenticate it, but it raises serious questions.””

Mark stared at the words.

Then he whispered, “Vanessa told me she had destroyed the original records.””

“Why would she tell you that?”” Emily asked.

“Because I asked her whether Claire could discover the truth.””

I leaned forward.

“What exactly were you afraid she'd discover?””

Mark looked at me.

“That I'd known about the infertility diagnosis before the divorce.””

“And you thought destroying the records would make that disappear?””

He shook his head.

“I didn't destroy anything. I never had the original files.””

“But you knew someone was trying to hide them.””

He couldn't deny it.

Rachel closed the folder.

“We need to stop speculating and establish what the records actually show.””

Before anyone could respond, Mark's phone rang.

Vanessa's name appeared on the screen.

He put it on speaker.

“Mark,” Vanessa said, her voice bright and controlled.

“Have you told Claire about the night you came to her house?””

“Yes.””

“And have you told her why you went there?””

“I told her the truth.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“No, you told her the version that makes you look pathetic instead of dangerous.””

Mark stiffened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you should ask Claire what she remembers about the next morning.””

I felt a cold shiver travel down my spine.

“The next morning?”” I repeated.

Vanessa continued.

“Ask her what she found in the kitchen after you left.””

I closed my eyes, searching my memory.

The kitchen had been clean.

The dishes had been washed.

I'd spent the morning crying, then gone to work.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing I could remember.

Vanessa's voice softened.

“Go on, Claire. Think carefully.””

May you like

Then she said the words that made the entire room freeze.

“Do you remember the envelope you found under your front door?””
