Chapter 14: The Family They Tried to Build Without Me

I drove to Rachel's office with Natalie beside me.

Neither of us spoke much during the journey.

The possibility that my name had been used in a private adoption arrangement was so disturbing that I couldn't yet decide what it meant.

I'd never agreed to adopt Vanessa's child.

I'd never met the baby.

And I'd certainly never given anyone permission to use my identity in a legal or medical document.

Rachel had placed the relevant records in a sealed folder.

She waited until we were seated before opening it.

“This document appears to have been prepared by the consulting firm,” she explained.

“It refers to a proposed family arrangement involving Mark, Vanessa, and a second woman.””

She slid the page toward me.

My name appeared in the middle of the paragraph.

In the event of a successful pregnancy involving Claire Harrison, the parties agree that all future arrangements concerning the expected heir will be reconsidered.

I read it again.

“Expected heir.””

Rachel nodded.

“The phrase appears in several documents connected to Richard Cole's proposed investment agreement.””

Natalie leaned forward.

“So they were planning for Mark to have a child with Vanessa, but they were also preparing for Claire to get pregnant?””

“That's one possible interpretation,” Rachel replied.

“We haven't established whether the agreement was ever implemented or whether the references to Claire were intended to describe a real arrangement.””

I stared at the page.

“Why would my name be there at all?””

“That is what we need to determine.””

She opened another folder.

Inside were copies of emails between Richard Cole and an attorney who had worked with the consulting firm.

One message, dated four years earlier, contained a sentence that made my skin crawl.

Mark's first marriage must be resolved before the succession plan can proceed. The possibility of a natural child changes the financial structure.

I looked at Rachel.

“They were treating my divorce like a business transaction.””

“It appears that the business arrangements were connected to Mark's marital and family circumstances. But we need the full context before concluding what each participant intended.””

Natalie shook her head.

“How could anyone do this?””

I didn't answer.

I was thinking about the seven years I'd spent trying to give Mark a child.

All the appointments.

All the injections.

All the times I'd apologized for my body.

And somewhere in the background, men in expensive offices had discussed my marriage as though it were an inconvenient clause in a contract.

Rachel handed me another page.

“This one is important. It appears to be a draft letter from Richard Cole to Mark's father.””

The letter described Vanessa's desire to become a mother and the family's hope that Mark would eventually marry her.

It also mentioned an alternative plan if Mark's existing marriage ended.

If the first marriage dissolves and Mark remains unwilling to marry Vanessa, the child arrangement should be maintained independently of the marital dispute.

I read the sentence slowly.

“Maintained independently?””

“It could refer to financial support or another arrangement,” Rachel said.

“The wording is ambiguous.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Then why did they need Mark to pay eighty-five thousand dollars?””

“We don't know yet. The payment may have covered legal services, medical expenses, or other costs. The records we've seen don't provide a complete accounting.””

I leaned back.

“So we still don't know whether Mark participated willingly, whether Vanessa deceived him, or whether Richard was trying to secure an heir.””

“Correct. We have evidence of a proposed arrangement, a payment, and altered medical records. We don't yet have enough evidence to connect every action to a single plan.””

I appreciated her caution, even though I desperately wanted a clear answer.

For years, my life had been governed by other people's confident declarations.

My body was the problem.

My marriage was over.

I could never be a mother.

This time, I wanted the truth, even if it came in pieces.

That afternoon, Mark arrived at Rachel's office with a second box of documents.

He looked directly at me.

“I owe you an apology.””

“You've said that.””

“I know. But I didn't understand how much of this was connected to my family's business until I started reading the files.””

He placed the box on the table.

“I thought Vanessa was helping me find a way to have children. I thought the payment was for medical treatment and legal advice. I didn't understand that my father and hers had been discussing an heir.””

“Did you know they wanted you to marry Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Did you ever agree?””

“No.””

“Then why did you keep seeing her?””

He looked down.

“Because I was angry with you. Because I wanted to believe there was another way to have the family I'd dreamed of. And because Vanessa made it seem easy.””

I stared at him.

“Easy?””

“She told me I wouldn't have to go through more treatments. She said she could give me a child.””

“And you believed her.””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“I was so focused on becoming a father that I stopped thinking about what kind of husband I was becoming.””

I couldn't deny the truth in that statement.

But understanding why he'd behaved that way didn't excuse what he'd done.

“Did you know Vanessa was pregnant when you paid the money?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you know the baby was hers?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell Emily you didn't know about the child?””

His face reddened.

“I didn't want her to think I'd been planning to have a family with Vanessa.””

“But you were.””

“I was considering it.””

“While you were still married to me?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission settled over the table.

I felt no urge to shout.

The truth was painful enough without my raising my voice.

Mark continued.

“I never intended to adopt Vanessa's baby myself. I thought the money was helping her and the child while she decided what she wanted. I didn't understand the connection to the business agreement.””

“Did you ever meet the baby?””

“Yes. Once.””

“What happened?””

“He was asleep. Vanessa told me she wanted to raise him independently, and I agreed not to interfere.””

“Then why did she keep the arrangement secret?””

“I don't know.””

I watched him carefully.

“Mark, I need you to understand something. If you want to know Luke and Owen, you can't treat fatherhood like something you acquire through money or an agreement. They're not a prize for finally discovering the truth.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“You need to earn their trust. And that starts with respecting mine.””

“I will.””

Rachel interrupted.

“Before any decisions about the children, we need to establish the relevant facts and make sure everyone understands the legal responsibilities involved.””

Mark agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

For the first time, I believed he might actually do it.

Not because he deserved forgiveness.

Because the documents had finally made it impossible for him to hide behind his own version of events.

When the meeting ended, I walked outside with Natalie.

The afternoon sun was warm against my face.

“Do you think he's telling the truth?”” she asked.

“I think he's telling more of it than he used to.””

“That's not the same thing.””

“No.””

We stood beside the car for a moment.

Then my phone rang.

It was Diane.

“I need to tell you something about Richard,” she said.

“What now?””

“Before he died, he left a sealed letter with his attorney. I only found out about it yesterday.””

My heart tightened.

“What does it say?””

“I haven't read the entire letter, but the attorney told me it concerns Mark's inheritance and the proposed family arrangement.””

I closed my eyes.

“Diane, I cannot keep discovering another secret every day.””

“I understand.””

“Then tell me the important part.””

She took a shaky breath.

“The letter says Richard believed Mark already had a child when he signed the agreement.””

I froze.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“I know.””

“Mark didn't have children before Luke and Owen.””

“Not that we knew of.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then whose child did Richard believe Mark had?””

Diane was silent.

Finally, she whispered, “The letter names a woman who was pregnant before your divorce was finalized.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“Who?””

Diane answered in a voice barely above a whisper.

“Claire, the letter says you were already pregnant when Mark signed the inheritance agreement.””

I couldn't speak.

My pregnancy had been discovered weeks after my divorce became final.

But Richard had apparently believed I was pregnant before that.

And if he had known, then someone might have been aware of my pregnancy before I was.

I looked at Natalie.

She was watching my face, waiting for an explanation.

I couldn't give her one.

Because the letter had raised a new question that threatened to change everything.

If Richard believed I was pregnant before my divorce was finalized, who had told him?

And what had they intended to do with my children?
