Chapter 14: The Evidence Daniel Couldn't Destroy
Vanessa arrived at Melissa's office that afternoon carrying a brown envelope.
She looked exhausted.
Her pregnancy was progressing, but the stress had clearly taken a toll.
James offered her a chair.
"Are you sure you're comfortable being here?"" he asked.
She nodded.
"I can't keep protecting Daniel.""
Melissa opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails, financial records, and a document titled Family Reunification Strategy.
I felt my stomach turn.
The first page contained a timeline.
Six months earlier, Daniel had instructed his attorney to investigate whether he could challenge the legal parentage of my children.
He had also requested copies of my old fertility records.
The second page contained a list of possible claims.
One sentence had been highlighted.
If Sarah's children can be connected to the original embryo records, we may establish grounds to question the circumstances of their conception.
I stared at the page.
"He's trying to connect my sons to the embryos.""
Vanessa nodded.
"He believes the children are his biological sons because he thinks you used the embryos from your first marriage.""
"But they're not.""
"I know.""
She looked down.
"I also found an email from Patricia.""
Melissa turned the page.
The message had been sent to Daniel.
Once the children are legally connected to your medical records, Sarah will have no choice but to negotiate. She won't risk a public custody battle.
James slammed his hand against the table.
"They were planning to frighten her into silence.""
Melissa nodded.
"That's what this appears to show.""
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
"I never knew Daniel could be this cruel.""
I looked at her.
"Neither did I.""
She gave a bitter laugh.
"Actually, I think I did. I just didn't want to see it.""
Melissa continued examining the documents.
Then she stopped.
"Vanessa, where did you get this email?""
"From Daniel's office computer. He left his account open when he went to the hospital.""
"Did you alter anything?""
"No. I printed the messages exactly as they appeared.""
"Good. We need to preserve the original electronic records if possible.""
Vanessa nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"There's something else.""
She pulled out a small envelope.
"Daniel gave this to me before the baby shower. He told me it contained the final paperwork for our baby's birth registration.""
I opened it.
Inside was a document authorizing Daniel to make certain medical and legal decisions regarding the pregnancy.
But something was wrong.
The form contained a statement claiming Vanessa had received full disclosure about the embryo's genetic origins.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Vanessa stared at it.
"I never signed that.""
Melissa examined the page.
"Did you ever authorize Daniel to sign on your behalf?""
"No.""
Melissa placed the document inside a protective folder.
"Then we have another alleged forged authorization.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I don't want my baby growing up surrounded by all this.""
I reached across the table and held her hand.
"Your baby deserves the truth. Just like my boys.""
She nodded.
Then she said something I hadn't expected.
"I'm leaving Daniel.""
The room became quiet.
James gave her a sympathetic look.
"Are you safe?""
Vanessa nodded.
"I've arranged to stay with my sister. My attorney knows everything.""
Melissa explained that Vanessa should have her own legal representation and that any medical concerns should be discussed directly with her obstetrician.
Vanessa agreed.
Before leaving, she turned toward me.
"Sarah, I need to apologize.""
"For what?""
"For laughing when Daniel humiliated you at the shower. For repeating the things he told me. I thought you were the problem.""
I looked at her.
"You believed your husband. I understand that.""
"But you didn't deserve it.""
"No," I said.
"I didn't.""
She hugged me.
It was an unexpected moment of kindness in a story that had contained very little.
Three days later, the hospital completed its preliminary investigation.
The amendment request had been suspended.
The original birth records remained intact.
The forged documents were referred for further investigation.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
He had one final opportunity to destroy the evidence.
Melissa called me early Friday morning.
"Sarah, Daniel's attorney has withdrawn the proposed parentage challenge.""
I sat up in bed.
"Why?""
"Because the records he intended to rely on have been independently questioned.""
I exhaled.
"Does that mean it's over?""
Melissa paused.
"Not quite.""
"What happened?""
"Daniel has offered to provide information about Patricia's involvement in the embryo transfer.""
I frowned.
"He's blaming his mother again?""
"Yes. But there's something important. He's also offering to testify about the original clinic transactions.""
"Why would he do that?""
"Because he wants immunity from certain allegations.""
I stared at the ceiling.
He was doing it again.
When things became difficult, Daniel searched for someone else to carry the blame.
"Does he have evidence against Patricia?""
Melissa hesitated.
"Apparently, he has a recording.""
My stomach tightened.
"What recording?""
"A conversation between Patricia and someone at the clinic.""
"Who?""
Melissa lowered her voice.
"Sarah, the recording contains a name we haven't heard before.""
"Whose?""
"Your former fertility specialist.""
I froze.
Dr. Howard.
The man who had told me there was still hope when Daniel's test results came back.
The man who had assured me our records were confidential.
The man who had signed the original treatment recommendations.
Melissa continued.
"Daniel claims the doctor knew about the specimen substitution from the beginning.""
I looked toward the bedroom door.
James was standing there.
He had heard enough to understand.
I whispered, "How many people were involved in this?""
May you like
Melissa answered.
"That's exactly what we're about to find out.""
