Chapter 1: The Secret Patricia Tried to Bury

Patricia's whisper was barely audible, but in a room where forty people had suddenly stopped breathing, everyone heard it.

"She wasn't supposed to find out until after the baby was born.""

Vanessa stared at the document in her trembling hands. Her eyes moved from the recipient's name to Daniel's face, then down to her swollen belly.

"Daniel," she whispered.

"Tell me this is fake.""

Daniel reached for the paper.

"Vanessa, give me that. This isn't what it looks like.""

She stepped backward.

"Then what does it look like? Because according to this document, my name is listed as the recipient of embryos belonging to you and your former wife.""

Nobody moved.

I stood beside my three-year-old twins, Ethan and Noah, watching the man who had once made me feel worthless struggle to find a lie big enough to save himself.

"Sarah, please," Daniel said, lowering his voice.

"We can discuss this privately.""

I almost laughed.

Privately?

He had spent years humiliating me in front of his family. He had invited me to this baby shower specifically so he could celebrate his new marriage at my expense.

Now he wanted privacy.

"Why don't you explain it to everyone?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

"Daniel, answer me.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"The clinic made an administrative mistake. That's all.""

I shook my head.

"No, Daniel. Administrative mistakes don't come with forged signatures.""

Patricia immediately stepped forward.

"Sarah, you have no idea what you're talking about. You're clearly bitter because Daniel moved on.""

My older son, Ethan, squeezed my hand.

"Mommy, why is that lady yelling?""

I crouched and adjusted his little blue bow tie.

"She's just upset, sweetheart.""

Noah looked toward Daniel.

"Mommy, is that the man who made you sad?""

The question landed harder than anything I could have said.

Daniel's face tightened.

"Sarah, what have you been telling these children about me?""

"Nothing," I answered.

"They don't know you.""

Vanessa slowly lowered herself onto the sofa.

"Daniel, I need the truth. Now.""

I opened my purse and removed another folder.

"This is the original medical record from the fertility clinic. It contains the results from our final examination before the divorce.""

Daniel's eyes widened.

He knew exactly what was inside.

Four years earlier, he had told everyone that my body was the reason we couldn't have children.

He had shown his mother a carefully selected page from a medical report. He had refused to let me see the complete results.

He had even told our friends that I was emotionally unstable because I couldn't accept my infertility.

But the full report said something entirely different.

Daniel had severe male-factor infertility. His sperm count was extremely low, and the specialist had warned him that natural conception was highly unlikely.

The doctor had also recommended further testing.

Daniel never returned.

Instead, he blamed me.

Vanessa read the report twice.

"Severe male-factor infertility," she said quietly.

"You told me Sarah couldn't have children.""

Daniel swallowed.

"That was years ago.""

"And you told me your first marriage ended because she was incapable of giving you a family.""

"Vanessa, please listen.""

She looked at me.

"How did you have those boys?""

I gently placed my hands on my sons' shoulders.

"After the divorce, I received treatment at another clinic. They discovered that my reproductive health had never been the problem. I eventually became pregnant through IVF.""

Daniel stared at the boys.

"Then who is their father?""

I looked him directly in the eyes.

"Someone who never made me feel ashamed of wanting to be a mother.""

His jaw clenched.

Patricia grabbed my arm.

"Enough! You came here to destroy this family!""

I pulled my arm away.

"No, Patricia. I came because your son invited me.""

Then I pointed toward the forged consent form in Vanessa's hands.

"And apparently, your family has been hiding something much worse than my supposed infertility.""

Vanessa looked down at her belly.

Her voice broke.

"Daniel, did you use Sarah's embryos to get me pregnant?""

May you like

Daniel didn't answer.

And that silence told us more than he ever could.
