Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
At ten the next morning, Tiana arrived at my office carrying a leather handbag and wearing no jewelry except a small silver necklace I'd given her years ago.
I noticed it immediately.
She caught me looking at it and touched the pendant.
“I almost threw this away,” she said.
“Why didn't you?””
“I suppose I couldn't.””
I gestured toward the chair opposite my desk.
“Sit down, Tiana.””
She lowered herself into the seat, placing her handbag on her knees like a shield.
For several seconds, she studied the office around her. The glass walls. The skyline beyond the windows. The framed photograph of my employees celebrating our first billion-dollar valuation.
“You really did it,” she whispered.
“Did what?””
“Built the life you always talked about.””
I opened a folder.
“Let's not pretend this is a reunion. You contacted me because you said you could explain the leaked documents.””
Her eyes dropped to the folder.
“Yes.””
“Start with the $75,000 Devon transferred to you.””
Her head snapped up.
“Ethan showed you that?””
“Does it matter who showed me?””
She pressed her lips together.
“I was paid to review financial projections.””
“You were paid to access confidential information.””
“I didn't know it was confidential at first.””
“Then when did you find out?””
She looked toward the window.
“And you continued?””
Her silence answered me.
I leaned forward.
“Why, Tiana?””
She laughed once, without humor.
“Because I was drowning.””
I waited.
She opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope. Inside were overdue notices, a bank statement, and several letters from a debt collection agency.
“My boutique failed last year,” she said.
“I borrowed money to keep it open, then borrowed more to cover the first loans. I thought I could recover during the holiday season. I couldn't.””
“Why didn't you ask someone for help?””
“Who? You?””
The question came out sharper than she intended.
I didn't answer.
She looked down at her hands.
“I knew what I did to you. I knew I had no right to come back asking for anything.””
“So you went to Devon instead.””
“He approached me.””
“How did he know you?””
“He said Northbridge had been researching Reed Meridian for months. He found out we used to date and thought I might know how you worked.””
I felt a chill move through me.
“What exactly did he ask?””
“At first, it was harmless. He wanted to know how you handled negotiations, which executives you trusted, what kind of acquisitions interested you.””
“And you told him?””
“Yes.””
“Then?””
“Then he asked whether I could get in touch with someone inside the company.””
“Ethan.””
She nodded slowly.
“Devon already knew your brother. They'd met at a business conference. He said Ethan was frustrated with his position and might be willing to help.””
I remembered Ethan's expression on the bleachers.
I was trying to prove I could build something of my own.
“What did Devon promise you?””
“Money. Enough to pay off my debts. He said the information was being used to prepare a legitimate partnership proposal.””
“And the $75,000?””
“An advance.””
“For what?””
Her fingers twisted around the edge of the envelope.
“For getting access to the acquisition files.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
For three years, I'd imagined Tiana regretting her decision. I'd pictured her discovering that I'd succeeded and realizing she'd underestimated me.
I hadn't imagined this.
I turned back.
“Did you know Ethan planned to take control of my shares?””
“No.””
“Did you know my signature was forged?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No. Marcus, I swear I didn't know about that.””
“Why should I believe you?””
“Because if I'd known, I wouldn't be sitting here.””
“That's not a convincing argument.””
Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't look away.
“I know.””
She reached into her handbag again and removed a small flash drive.
“There's something you need to see.””
I didn't touch it.
“What's on it?””
“Messages between Devon and Ethan. I copied them from Devon's laptop two nights ago.””
“Why?””
“Because I realized he wasn't planning to stop at the financial documents.””
She slid the drive across the desk.
“He was planning to use the information to damage your company before the acquisition closed. If the board believed Reed Meridian had concealed financial risks, your stock value could drop. Then Northbridge would make an offer to buy controlling assets at a discount.””
I looked at the drive.
“And Ethan would take control of my voting shares.””
“Yes.””
“Why would Devon want my brother in charge?””
Tiana swallowed.
“Because Ethan signed an agreement promising to transfer certain assets to a company Devon controls after he gained control of Reed Meridian.””
I felt sick.
“What assets?””
“I don't know all the details. But I saw the name of a subsidiary—Reed Meridian Infrastructure. It owns the warehouses, distribution contracts, and property leases that make your logistics division valuable.””
The room seemed to grow smaller.
That subsidiary alone represented years of careful expansion.
“Did you copy the entire conversation?””
“Everything I could.””
“Why come to me now?””
She looked at me for a long time.
“Because last night, Devon told me I had to leave Atlanta immediately.””
“Did he threaten you?””
“He said if I stayed, I'd become the person everyone blamed when things went wrong.””
I picked up the flash drive.
“Maybe you will be.””
She flinched.
“I know.””
“People lost jobs because of this. My employees trusted me to protect their work. You helped someone betray that trust.””
“I know, Marcus.””
“Stop saying that.””
My voice was louder than I'd intended.
She fell silent.
I lowered my voice.
“You don't get to make this right by handing me a flash drive. You made choices. Now you have to live with them.””
She nodded, wiping her cheeks.
“I'll testify. I'll give your attorneys everything. I'll tell them exactly what I did.””
“Why?””
She looked at the photograph of my employees on the wall.
“Because three years ago, I thought success meant having expensive things and never worrying about money. I thought you were failing because you didn't have them yet.””
Her voice broke.
“But I watched Devon last night. He wasn't worried about losing money. He was worried about losing control.””
She stood and gathered her handbag.
“And for the first time, I understood the difference.””
At the door, she paused.
“Marcus?””
I didn't turn.
“I really did love you once.””
I stared at the city.
“I believe you.””
She waited, perhaps expecting something more.
But love wasn't a receipt she could present to erase the damage.
When the door closed, I immediately called Elaine.
“Get our forensic team to examine the drive. Preserve everything. No one accesses those files without legal authorization.””
“Understood. Anything else?””
“Yes. I want a complete review of Reed Meridian Infrastructure.””
“Why that subsidiary?””
“Because I think it's the real target.””
There was a pause.
“Marcus, I've just received an email from the board secretary. Richard Cole has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning.””
“What's the agenda?””
Elaine's voice tightened.
“An emergency vote on your authority as chief executive.””
I stared at Tiana's abandoned chair.
May you like
“Who requested it?””
“Richard Cole. And the motion is supported by Ethan Reed.””
