Chapter 10: The Witness Who Changed Her Story
At 7:15 the next morning, Tiana Brooks arrived at my attorney's office carrying a sealed envelope and wearing the same silver necklace she'd worn during our meeting.
She looked as though she hadn't slept.
Daniel Foster, my attorney, met her at the door. Two members of his legal team stood behind him, ready to document anything she disclosed.
I remained seated at the conference table.
Tiana stopped when she saw me.
“Marcus, I need you to understand something before we begin.””
“You have five minutes before the hearing preparation starts. Use them wisely.””
She flinched at my tone but continued.
“Richard Cole has been threatening me. He says if I testify against him, he'll make sure I take the blame for everything that happened.””
“You helped leak confidential documents.””
“I know.””
“You accepted money from Devon.””
“I know that too.””
“Then what exactly are you asking me to understand?””
She placed the envelope on the table.
“I'm asking you to understand that Richard wasn't simply helping Devon. He was running the entire operation.””
Daniel opened the envelope carefully.
Inside were printed emails, a photograph of a handwritten ledger, and a notarized statement.
He scanned the first page.
“Where did you get these?””
“From Richard's assistant. I was supposed to deliver a document to his office three weeks ago. His assistant left the wrong folder on the desk, and I saw the emails.””
“You stole them?””
“I photographed them. Then I put the folder back.””
I watched her carefully.
“What did the emails say?””
Tiana pulled out a chair but didn't sit.
“They discussed the ownership transfer. Richard wanted Ethan to become the controlling shareholder of Reed Meridian Holdings, then transfer the infrastructure division to Atlantic Crest. Devon would acquire Atlantic Crest's assets through a separate agreement.””
Daniel looked up.
“That's a complicated arrangement.””
“It was designed to make it look as though Ethan had independently restructured the business. Richard would get a financial interest, Devon would control the assets, and everyone would claim the transactions were legitimate.””
“And what would happen to Ethan?””
Tiana's gaze dropped.
“He would be left holding the liabilities.””
I stared at her.
“Meaning?””
“Richard planned to move the valuable assets out first. Then, once Ethan took control of the remaining company, the debts and legal disputes would become his responsibility.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
My brother had been willing to betray me for a share of my success. But the man he'd trusted was planning to destroy him, too.
Daniel studied the documents again.
“Do these emails establish that Mr. Cole knew the consent document was forged?””
Tiana nodded.
“There is one message where Richard says the signature has to look authentic enough to survive an initial review. He specifically mentions Marcus's travel schedule.””
Daniel's expression sharpened.
“That's significant. We need the original electronic records, not just photographs.””
“I can help you get them.””
“How?””
“Richard keeps a backup of his business correspondence on a private server. His assistant has access. She agreed to provide the records if we can protect her.””
I leaned forward.
“Why would she risk her job for you?””
Tiana looked directly at me.
“Because Richard threatened her, too.””
Daniel closed the folder.
“I'm going to contact the appropriate authorities and determine how these records can be obtained lawfully. Until then, nobody accesses that server.””
Tiana nodded.
Then she turned toward me.
“Marcus, I know I don't deserve your trust.””
“You're right.””
Her eyes glistened.
“But I need you to believe me about one thing. I never knew Richard planned to use Ethan and leave him with the debts.””
“Did you know about the forged signature?””
“No.””
“Did you know about the transfer?””
“Yes.””
The answer came quickly, without an excuse.
I studied her face.
“Then you knew enough to stop.””
She lowered her head.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me more than another denial would have.
Daniel's phone rang. He stepped into the adjoining office to take the call, leaving Tiana and me alone.
She reached for the silver pendant at her throat.
“Do you remember when you gave me this?””
“Of course.””
“It was our second anniversary. You'd been working for weeks, and you bought it with money you should have spent on your rent.””
“I remember.””
“I thought it was cheap.””
The admission hung between us.
“I told my friends it was temporary jewelry. I thought you'd eventually make enough money to buy me something better.””
I looked at the pendant.
“I wasn't trying to buy your loyalty.””
“I know that now.””
She sat down.
“After I left you, I kept waiting for you to fail. I wanted to believe I had made the right decision. Every time I saw your company mentioned in the news, I told myself you were lucky.””
“And now?””
“Now I understand that you kept working even when nobody believed in you.””
I didn't respond.
“I can't undo what I did,” she continued.
“But I can tell the truth.””
Daniel returned, his expression serious.
“We have a problem. The court has moved the hearing forward. It begins in ninety minutes.””
He placed a document on the table.
“Richard's attorneys have submitted Tiana's original statement, signed two days ago. It claims Marcus personally approved the transfer of Reed Meridian Infrastructure during a private meeting.””
Tiana stared at the page.
“I never signed this.””
Daniel turned it toward her.
“Your signature is at the bottom.””
“That's not my signature.””
She looked genuinely horrified.
Then she pulled out her phone and opened a message thread.
“Richard's assistant sent me a document to review. I never signed it. I only replied that I needed time to think.””
Daniel examined the messages.
“Can you authenticate these?””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Then that's what we'll do.””
Tiana looked at me with desperate hope.
“Marcus, if I testify, Richard will know I betrayed him.””
“He already knows you're a liability.””
“What if he comes after me?””
I held her gaze.
“I can't promise you nothing will happen. But if you tell the truth, our attorneys can help you cooperate with the investigation and request appropriate protection.””
She nodded slowly.
Then she said something that made Daniel stop packing his briefcase.
“There's another reason Richard needs this transfer completed today.””
“What reason?”” I asked.
Tiana reached into her handbag and removed one final sheet of paper.
It was a draft purchase agreement between Atlantic Crest Partners and Northbridge Logistics.
The scheduled closing time was 4:00 p.m.
The price was $310 million.
But beneath the purchase price was a clause stating that the transaction could proceed even if the original ownership agreement remained under dispute, provided Atlantic Crest obtained a temporary court order recognizing its control.
Daniel looked at his watch.
“We have less than two hours to stop this.””
I picked up my jacket.
“Then let's go to court.””
As we reached the door, Tiana caught my arm.
“Marcus, wait.””
I turned.
She looked terrified.
“Richard told me something last night. He said if the judge asks about the night your father died, you should remember that Ethan wasn't the only person who was there.””
My hand froze on the doorknob.
“What does that mean?””
Tiana's lips trembled.
“Richard has a witness who claims you were at the shop that night.””
I stared at her.
“I was home.””
“I know.””
“Then who is he planning to put on the stand?””
May you like
She whispered the answer.
“Your mother.””
