Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Door

The door opened slowly.

Everyone in the room held their breath.

And then she stepped inside.

Brooke.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

She looked different from the woman who had laughed at me in the ballroom.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect expression was gone.

She looked scared.

My father immediately moved between us.

“Why are you here?””

Brooke looked at him.

Not with fear.

With disappointment.

“Because I know what you did.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked at me.

“I came here to tell you the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“The truth?””

After everything that happened, that word felt meaningless.

“You mean another secret?””

Her eyes lowered.

“I deserve that.””

That surprised me.

Because Brooke had never admitted fault.

Not once.

She had always found someone else to blame.

The accident.

The company.

The money.

Me.

But now she stood in my childhood home looking like someone who had finally realized the damage she caused.

My father looked at her carefully.

“You shouldn’t have come.””

“I had to.””

“Brooke.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“I’m done protecting people who never protected me.””

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Brooke took a breath.

“Your father is right about one thing.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“Chad wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then who was?””

She looked at my father.

And that was when I saw it.

Hesitation.

Fear.

Like saying the name would change everything.

“Margaret.””

I already knew.

But hearing it again made it worse.

“Your mother’s death,” Brooke continued, “the company theft, your accident…”

She looked at me.

“Everything connects back to her.””

I looked at my father.

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more.

“You knew.””

My father’s face changed.

“Ethan—”

“You knew Margaret was involved.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

My voice rose.

“My entire life was destroyed, and you suspected?””

My father looked down.

“I was trying to gather proof.””

“And you couldn’t tell me?””

“Because every person who tried to expose her disappeared.””

The room became quiet.

Brooke stepped closer.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I looked at her.

“No?””

She shook her head.

“When Chad came to me, he told me you were going to lose the company.””

“You believed him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

“I thought I was saving myself.””

I stared at her.

“At least you’re finally admitting it.””

She swallowed.

“But I didn’t know he was working with my mother.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“Your mother?””

Brooke nodded.

“She used me.””

That sentence caught my attention.

“Explain.””

Brooke looked toward the old family photos on the wall.

“My mother always controlled everything.””

She laughed quietly.

“I used to think she was just ambitious.””

She looked back at me.

“But she wasn’t.””

A long silence followed.

“She was obsessed with power.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Do you have proof?””

Brooke reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small drive.

“I took this from her office.””

My father immediately looked alarmed.

“What’s on it?””

“Everything.””

She handed it to me.

I stared at the device.

A tiny piece of plastic.

But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

“Why now?””

Brooke looked at me.

“Because I heard what she planned next.””

“What?””

Her voice became quieter.

“She wants to finish what she started.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Brooke looked toward the window.

“She’s going after you.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re the last person standing between her and complete control.””

I looked at the drive.

Then at my father.

“Open it.””

Daniel connected it to his laptop.

The screen filled with files.

Hundreds of them.

Financial records.

Emails.

Photos.

Then one folder appeared.

Created six months ago.

The day of my accident.

I opened it.

Inside was a video.

My hands froze.

The file name was:

*Operation Bennett Collapse.*

I clicked play.

The screen showed a dark room.

Three people sat around a table.

Chad.

Margaret.

And someone else.

Someone I couldn’t see clearly.

Then Margaret spoke.

“Once Ethan is gone, everything belongs to us.””

My breathing stopped.

Chad nodded.

“What about his recovery?””

Margaret smiled.

“He won’t recover.””

The video continued.

“She’ll leave him.””

A familiar voice answered.

Brooke.

My blood turned cold.

“I’ll make sure of it.””

The room went silent.

Brooke covered her mouth.

“No.””

The video kept playing.

And then the camera moved.

Revealing the third person at the table.

The person who had been hidden.

The person who planned everything.

My father stepped back.

Because he recognized him first.

“No…”

I looked at the screen.

And my heart stopped.

The third person was someone I thought had been my greatest ally.

May you like

Someone who had helped me build everything.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.
