Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The words on the back of the photograph burned into my mind.

*Ask your father why he lied.*

For a moment, I forgot the noise of the ballroom.

I forgot the guests.

I forgot Brooke, Chad, and the scandal unfolding around us.

All I could see was that picture.

My car.

The broken windshield.

The twisted metal.

And a shadowed figure standing beside the wreckage.

Someone had been there before the ambulance arrived.

Someone who knew exactly what happened.

“Ethan?””

Daniel’s voice sounded distant.

I turned the photograph over again.

“Where did this come from?””

Isabella looked at the envelope.

“It was sitting on the coat table.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

Something about her hesitation bothered me.

“Isabella.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t put it there.””

“I didn’t say you did.””

“But you wondered.””

She was right.

And I hated that she was right.

Six months of betrayal had changed the way I saw people.

Trust didn’t come naturally anymore.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Ethan, we need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent this knows something about your accident. And they know you would be here tonight.””

I looked around the ballroom.

Two hundred strangers.

Some friends.

Some enemies.

Maybe someone who had been watching me the entire night.

Then I noticed something.

The person in the photograph was wearing a watch.

A silver watch with a black face.

I had seen that watch before.

My heart dropped.

“No.””

Daniel followed my gaze.

“What?””

I pointed at the photograph.

“That watch.””

He studied it.

“Do you recognize it?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because the person who wore that watch was impossible.

It belonged to my father.

Richard Bennett.

The man who had taught me everything about business.

The man who raised me after my mother died.

The man who told me every decision I made had to be based on logic, not emotion.

My father had died eight years ago.

He couldn’t be standing beside my crashed car.

Could he?

“That’s not possible,” I whispered.

Isabella looked confused.

“What?””

I showed her the photograph.

“The watch.””

She studied it.

“Who does it belong to?””

“My father.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Ethan…”

“I know.””

I looked toward the ballroom doors.

“I know what it sounds like.””

No one spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone around me looked at the screen.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Ethan.””

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

“Dad?””

The room disappeared.

I heard my own heartbeat.

Impossible.

A person I had buried was speaking to me.

“Listen carefully,” the voice said.

“Who is this?””

“You don’t have much time.””

My hands started shaking.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Dad, you’re alive?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than any betrayal.

I stepped away from everyone.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

My voice rose.

“Do you know what I went through?””

“I know everything.””

The anger inside me exploded.

“You watched?””

“I protected you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By disappearing?””

“Ethan, you need to understand something. The accident wasn’t meant to hurt you.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Then what was it?””

Another pause.

“The accident was meant to scare you.””

“Who?””

The line became quiet.

Then my father said:

“The person who destroyed your company was never Chad.””

My eyes moved across the ballroom.

“Then who?””

Before he answered, the call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Completely frozen.

Isabella approached carefully.

“Ethan?””

I looked at her.

“My father is alive.””

Her expression changed.

Daniel stared at me.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

The ballroom suddenly felt like a stage where everyone was acting.

Except I was the only one who didn’t know the script.

Then Brooke walked toward me.

She looked pale.

“I heard what you said.””

I didn’t respond.

“My father-in-law is alive?””

I looked at her.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

Her eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?””

I held up the photograph.

“The right question is why someone wanted me to believe he wasn’t.””

Brooke looked at the picture.

Then she stepped back.

Because she recognized something.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“I’ve seen that watch before.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where?””

She looked toward the empty doorway.

“At Chad’s apartment.””

The room went silent.

And suddenly, the accident wasn’t the only mystery.

Because someone had a photograph from that night.

May you like

Someone had my father’s watch.

And someone had been living with the man who betrayed me.
