Chapter 11: The Truth My Father Hid

I couldn’t breathe.

The words hung in the hallway.

*Richard Bennett is the reason your mother died.*

I looked at my father.

Waiting for him to deny it.

Waiting for him to say Victor was lying.

He didn’t.

That was the worst part.

“Dad?””

His eyes closed.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need to hear you say it.””

My father looked older than ever.

“Victor is twisting the truth.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Silence.

I hated that silence.

Because silence was what destroyed everything.

Victor leaned against the wall.

“Your father always did this.””

My eyes stayed on my father.

“What happened?””

My father took a deep breath.

“Your mother found out I made a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

He looked at the floor.

“A mistake that gave Victor power.””

I waited.

Years of confusion were finally coming together.

“I trusted him,” my father said.

Victor smiled.

“Of course you did.””

My father ignored him.

“Victor convinced me to create a private investment division.””

Daniel frowned.

“The hidden accounts?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You created them?””

“Yes.””

The confession hurt.

“But I didn’t know what Victor was doing.””

Victor laughed.

“Convenient.””

My father’s voice became stronger.

“I discovered the truth too late.””

“What truth?””

“That Victor was using the accounts to move illegal money.””

The room went silent.

“And my mother found out?””

My father nodded.

“She was going to expose him.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“She was reckless.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You talk about her like she was the problem.””

Victor looked at me.

“She was.””

I stepped toward him.

“You don’t get to say her name.””

My father grabbed my shoulder.

“Ethan.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

I looked at Victor.

“You took everything.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Your father did.””

The anger inside me burned.

“You’re lying.””

Victor looked at Isabella.

“Tell him.””

She looked away.

That scared me.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“Your own daughter discovered the truth.””

I turned to Isabella.

“Is that true?””

She looked at me.

“I found records.””

“What records?””

“Your father signed documents approving the investment division.””

My stomach tightened.

My father looked devastated.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“But people got hurt.””

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

Honest.

And somehow that hurt more.

My father continued.

“Your mother found out and confronted Victor.””

“What happened?””

“She threatened to go public.””

Victor looked away.

For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.

“And then?””

My father’s voice broke.

“She died.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt numb.

Not because I believed Victor.

Not completely.

But because my father had hidden something.

Something enormous.

“You let me believe everything was simple.””

“I wanted to protect you.””

“You wanted to protect yourself.””

My father looked like I had hit him.

Maybe I had.

Then Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What?””

We all looked at him.

“What happened?””

He lowered the phone.

“The police found Chad.””

“Good.””

“No.””

Daniel swallowed.

“He escaped custody.””

Victor smiled.

“He was never the weakest piece.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Victor walked toward the door.

“It means Chad knows the final secret.””

“What secret?””

He stopped.

Then looked back.

“The secret your mother died trying to reveal.””

The lights flickered again.

When they returned, Victor was gone.

No footsteps.

No sound.

Just an open doorway.

And on the floor outside the office was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Inside was one piece of paper.

May you like

A single sentence.

*The person who betrayed you at the beginning is the same person who will save you at the end.*
