Chapter 12: My Mother's Letter

Danielle refused to open the letter at the police station.

She held the envelope in both hands during the entire drive home.

Her name was written across the front in my mother's familiar handwriting.

Not Mrs. Williams.

Not Danielle.

Just her first name.

As if Patricia still believed they were family.

When we reached the house, Danielle placed the envelope on Lily's desk.

“Open it,” she said.

I hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“It's about our daughter. I have a right to know.””

I carefully tore the envelope.

Inside were three handwritten pages.

The first began:

Danielle,

I know you hate me. I know you believe I destroyed your family. But there are things you don't understand.

I kept reading.

Marcus was never supposed to know about the trust arrangement until everything was finalized. Ethan assured me the paperwork was legal.

I only wanted to protect what belonged to the Williams family.

Danielle laughed bitterly.

“Protect the family? She stole from our child.””

I continued.

Lily overheard a conversation between Ethan and me. She asked why money was being taken from her account. I told her it was a misunderstanding.

The next paragraph was worse.

She became frightened and said she wanted to tell her father. I tried to explain that Marcus was busy and wouldn't understand.

I looked up.

Danielle was staring at me.

I swallowed.

When Lily continued asking questions, I told her that her father had chosen another woman and didn't want to be disturbed.

Danielle covered her mouth.

Then came the sentence that made my fingers tremble.

I never intended for her to believe she was unloved.

I dropped the letter onto the desk.

Danielle stared at me.

“That's her excuse?””

I couldn't answer.

She picked up the pages.

“Keep going.””

The final paragraph read:

The night before Marcus left, Lily saw something in Ethan's folder. She told me she knew what we had done. I panicked. I thought if I kept Marcus away for a few days, we could correct the financial records and explain everything before anyone noticed.

I never imagined she would become so ill.

Danielle slammed the pages onto the desk.

“You knew she was ill!””

She began pacing.

“You knew she was in the hospital! You knew she was asking for her father!””

Her voice broke.

“And you still didn't tell him.””

I looked at the letter again.

Something was missing.

It explained the lies.

It explained the financial scheme.

But it didn't explain the medication.

I called Officer Brooks.

He arrived within half an hour.

After reading the letter, he looked concerned.

“Patricia has admitted to withholding information and participating in the financial arrangement. But this doesn't establish what happened medically.””

“Then where is she?”” Danielle demanded.

“We're searching for her.””

Officer Brooks placed another document on Lily's desk.

“There's an update from the medical examiner.””

I stood.

“What update?””

“The initial toxicology screening detected a substance not listed in Lily's prescribed treatment.””

Danielle gripped my arm.

“What does that mean?””

“We're waiting for confirmatory testing. We also need to determine the amount, timing, and whether it contributed to her deterioration.””

I stared at him.

“Could it have caused her death?””

“It's too early to say conclusively.””

Danielle sat down.

For the first time, I saw something in her expression that frightened me more than anger.

She looked completely empty.

Officer Brooks continued.

“There's another issue. The hospital records show that Patricia visited Lily shortly before her condition worsened.””

“Sunday morning,” I whispered.

He nodded.

“We've interviewed the nursing staff. One nurse remembers Patricia asking whether Lily had received her scheduled medication.””

“Why?””

“She claimed she wanted to make sure her granddaughter was comfortable.””

Danielle stood.

“Did she give Lily anything?””

“The nurse says she saw Patricia holding a small medicine cup. However, she didn't witness what was inside.””

My heart began pounding.

“Can we see the security footage?””

“We already have.””

Officer Brooks opened his tablet.

The video showed Patricia entering Lily's hospital room at 7:42 a.m.

Rachel followed.

Patricia approached the bed.

She leaned over Lily.

Then she lifted a small cup toward her granddaughter.

Lily turned her head.

Even without sound, her refusal was obvious.

Patricia moved closer.

The nurse appeared in the doorway.

My mother immediately lowered the cup.

The footage ended.

Danielle began shaking.

“She tried to give her something?””

“We can't identify the substance from the video.””

I looked at Officer Brooks.

“Where's Rachel now?””

“She is cooperating with investigators.””

“Then ask her what was in that cup.””

Officer Brooks nodded.

He stepped outside to make a call.

Danielle remained beside Lily's desk.

I approached her.

“I'm sorry.””

She didn't look at me.

“Don't.””

“I know I failed her.””

“You did.””

“I should have answered.””

“Yes.””

“I should have been there.””

“Yes, Marcus.””

She finally turned toward me.

“Do you know what Lily said when I told her you were coming?””

I shook my head.

“She asked me to brush her hair.””

My throat tightened.

“She wanted to look pretty when you arrived.””

Danielle began crying.

“She thought you would hug her if she looked pretty.””

I covered my face.

“I don't deserve to be her father.””

Danielle looked at me for a long moment.

Then she said something I would carry for the rest of my life.

“You don't get to decide whether you deserved her. She was your daughter. She loved you anyway.””

My phone rang.

Officer Brooks returned.

“We've located Patricia.””

“Where?””

“She was at a motel outside Savannah.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Savannah?””

The same city where I'd spent that weekend with Vanessa.

The detective nodded.

“She checked into the motel using a false name. We found several documents in her room, including a copy of Lily's trust agreement.””

“Is she under arrest?””

“We're bringing her in for questioning.””

Then Officer Brooks looked at Danielle.

“There's something else.””

He handed her a printed statement from Rachel.

“Your sister has provided additional information about the hospital visit.””

Danielle read it.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She handed me the paper.

Rachel had written:

At 7:42 a.m., Patricia told Lily that Daddy was never coming home. Lily began crying and asked for her phone. Patricia told her she didn't need it anymore.

I looked at the next line.

When Lily asked whether she could hear her father's voice one more time, Patricia said no.

My hands began shaking.

But the final sentence was worse.

Patricia then told Lily that if she wanted Daddy to come back, she needed to stop telling people about the medicine.

Danielle collapsed into the chair.

I read the statement again.

Then Officer Brooks spoke.

“There's one more thing Rachel told us.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He lowered his voice.

“She says Patricia wasn't the person who gave Lily the medication in that hospital room.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Then who was?””

Officer Brooks looked toward the door.

“The person who entered the room immediately after Patricia left.””

May you like

He paused.

“And that person was wearing a hospital uniform.””
