Chapter 11: The Man Who Watched My Daughter
Ethan Price was arrested in the parking garage before he could leave.
He had two boxes of company documents in his car, along with a laptop and a black folder containing copies of Lily's trust paperwork.
Officer Brooks called me shortly afterward.
“Mr. Williams, we have Ethan in custody for questioning.””
“Did he say anything?””
“He requested an attorney.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“What's in the boxes?””
“Financial records, correspondence, and several documents connected to the trust.””
“Is there anything about Lily?””
The detective paused.
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“We found photographs taken inside your house.””
I closed my eyes.
“How many?””
“Seven.””
Seven photographs of my daughter.
Seven moments from her ordinary little life that someone had been secretly collecting.
I drove to the station with Danielle.
Neither of us spoke during the journey.
When we arrived, Officer Brooks met us in the hallway.
“There's something you need to see.””
He led us into a private room.
On the table were seven printed photographs.
Lily eating breakfast.
Lily coloring at the kitchen table.
Lily standing beside the staircase.
Lily holding her stuffed rabbit.
One photograph showed her sitting on the floor, crying.
Danielle picked it up.
“Why would anyone take this?””
Officer Brooks examined the back.
“There's a date written here.””
It was from the day Lily had returned from the hospital after a routine checkup.
Beneath the date were three words.
Still asking Daddy.
Danielle began sobbing.
I picked up another photograph.
This one showed Lily standing in front of the refrigerator.
She was holding a small medicine bottle.
On the back, Ethan had written:
Patricia says she took it again.
I felt sick.
“Ethan was monitoring her?””
“That's what we're trying to establish.””
Danielle looked at the detective.
“Why would a financial officer care what medicine an eight-year-old was taking?””
Officer Brooks didn't answer.
Instead, he placed another photograph on the table.
It showed Ethan standing in our kitchen with Patricia.
Between them was a stack of documents.
Lily was visible in the background, partially hidden behind the doorway.
I stared at the image.
My daughter had been watching them.
She'd been standing just a few feet away.
And she had heard something.
Officer Brooks spoke quietly.
“We believe Lily may have discovered the financial arrangement before she became seriously ill.””
Danielle shook her head.
“She wouldn't understand those documents.””
“Perhaps not. But she may have heard conversations.””
I remembered her recording.
Grandma, I wasn't telling.
I looked at the detective.
“What happens now?””
“We're waiting for Ethan's attorney to arrange a formal interview. But we have obtained a search warrant for his electronic devices.””
A few minutes later, an officer entered with a laptop.
“Detective, we recovered a deleted folder from Price's computer.””
Officer Brooks opened it.
Inside were several spreadsheets.
The first listed dates.
The second listed payments.
The third contained names.
Patricia Williams.
Samuel Reed.
Ethan Price.
Vanessa Cole.
I stared at the screen.
They had all been involved.
But one entry made my blood run cold.
*LILY WILLIAMS — STATUS: UNPREDICTABLE.*
Danielle covered her mouth.
“She's a child. Why would they write that?””
Officer Brooks opened the associated notes.
A sentence appeared.
Subject has repeatedly mentioned telling father about unauthorized medication and trust documents.
My hands began shaking.
“She was trying to tell me.””
The detective nodded.
“That's what this suggests.””
Then he opened another file.
It was an audio recording.
The date was Thursday night, the evening before my trip.
Officer Brooks pressed play.
Ethan's voice filled the room.
“Patricia, the transfer needs to happen before the next quarterly review.””
My mother's voice followed.
“I know. Marcus is signing the papers tomorrow.””
“And the girl?””
“She's becoming difficult.””
Ethan sighed.
“Then keep her away from the documents.””
“She heard us.””
“Did she understand?””
“I don't think so.””
There was a pause.
Then Ethan said something that made Danielle grab my arm.
“If she tells Marcus, we're finished.””
My mother's answer was almost inaudible.
“Then he can't come home.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the laptop.
Officer Brooks immediately made a note.
“We'll need to verify the authenticity of this file.””
I nodded.
Then I asked, “What happened after that conversation?””
The detective opened another recording.
This one was from Saturday morning.
My mother's voice sounded angry.
“She keeps asking for her father.””
Ethan replied, “You need to stop encouraging her.””
“She won't listen.””
“Then remind her what happens if she tells him.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Danielle whispered, “What does that mean?””
The recording continued.
My mother said, “I told her Daddy doesn't want to hear from her.””
Ethan answered, “Good. Keep it that way.””
Then came a sound.
A small voice.
Lily.
“But Daddy promised he'd come back.””
Silence.
Then Patricia spoke.
“Your daddy has a new family now, sweetheart.””
I couldn't stand anymore.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
Danielle was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
But the recording wasn't over.
Lily whispered something else.
“Then why does Grandma keep saying I have to take the medicine?””
Officer Brooks immediately paused the audio.
He looked at us.
“We need to establish exactly what was administered, when, and by whom. The medical examiner is reviewing the toxicology findings.””
I stared at the screen.
For the first time, the investigation had uncovered something that went beyond stolen money and cruel lies.
My daughter had been frightened.
She had been asking questions.
And someone had been telling her that speaking up would cost her the love of her father.
Then Officer Brooks received a phone call.
He listened for several seconds.
His expression changed.
“What do you mean she's missing?””
He ended the call.
“Mr. Williams, Patricia has left her residence.””
“Where is she?””
“We don't know.””
He picked up his jacket.
“But she left something behind.””
“What?””
“A handwritten letter addressed to Danielle.””
May you like
The detective looked at my wife.
“And according to the officer who found it, the letter begins with an admission about Lily's final night.””
