Chapter 14: The Last Secret in the Trust
We found the Colorado facility at 3:40 in the morning.
It was a private rehabilitation residence outside Colorado Springs, surrounded by pine trees and a tall stone wall.
The building looked more like a luxury hotel than a medical center.
Detective Miller contacted local authorities before we arrived.
James stayed beside me in the back seat.
I held Robert's photograph against my chest.
He looked older than the man I remembered.
But I recognized his eyes.
Those same eyes had watched me walk down the aisle thirty-seven years earlier.
Those same eyes had cried when Brielle was born.
And those same eyes had apparently watched our daughter abandon him.
"Margaret," James said gently, "are you ready?""
I looked at him.
"No.""
He nodded.
"Neither am I.""
The police officers entered first.
A facility administrator met them in the lobby.
He was a tall man with gray hair and a nervous expression.
When Detective Miller showed him the medical file, he immediately called his supervisor.
"We need to verify the patient's identity," he said.
I stepped forward.
"His name is Robert Wilson.""
The administrator looked at me.
"Are you his wife?""
I nodded.
He studied my face for several seconds.
Then he quietly said:
"He's been asking for you.""
My knees weakened.
"Can I see him?""
The administrator led us down a long corridor.
At the end was a room with a large window overlooking a garden.
A man sat in an armchair beside the window.
His hair was completely white.
His shoulders were thinner.
A blanket covered his legs.
But when he turned toward the door, I recognized him immediately.
"Robert?""
His eyes widened.
For several seconds, he simply stared.
Then his lips began trembling.
"Margaret?""
I covered my mouth.
He pushed himself out of the chair.
I ran toward him.
We collided in the middle of the room, holding each other as though the world might separate us again.
"You're alive," I sobbed.
Robert pressed his face against my hair.
"I tried to come home.""
I held him tighter.
"I thought you were dead.""
"I'm sorry.""
"Don't apologize.""
He kissed my forehead.
Then he pulled back and examined my face.
His eyes moved toward my head.
I was wearing the temporary scarf Eleanor had found in her car.
"Your hair?""
I began crying again.
"I have cancer, Robert.""
His face crumpled.
"When?""
"Six months ago.""
He held my cheeks.
"Why didn't they tell me?""
I laughed through my tears.
"You were the one missing.""
For a moment, we simply looked at each other.
Then Robert noticed James standing near the doorway.
"James?""
James approached.
"Sir.""
Robert studied him.
"Where's Brielle?""
Nobody answered.
Robert slowly lowered himself into the chair.
"What happened?""
I sat beside him.
"Your daughter helped Richard steal the trust. She helped conceal the accident. She also signed documents transferring your estate.""
Robert closed his eyes.
"I was afraid of that.""
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because Richard told me he had control over her.""
I shook my head.
"He manipulated her. But she made choices, Robert.""
He nodded sadly.
"I know.""
Detective Miller stepped forward.
"Mr. Wilson, we need your statement.""
Robert looked at the detective.
"I'll tell you everything.""
Then he turned toward me.
"But first, you need to know why Richard wanted the house.""
He explained that the Wilson Family Trust had never been an ordinary inheritance arrangement.
My mother had left money to both daughters.
The original amount had been invested and grown substantially.
Robert had later discovered that the trust also held controlling interests in several commercial properties.
Its value was considerably higher than anyone in the family realized.
"How much?"" James asked.
Robert looked at him.
"Approximately eleven million dollars.""
I stared at him.
"Eleven million?""
He nodded.
"Richard had been using the trust as collateral for his private investments. When the investments began failing, he needed full control of the assets.""
"And my house?""
"Your house was held separately under a protective clause. It was the final asset he couldn't access without your authorization.""
I remembered the forged transfer agreement.
Robert continued.
"After the accident, Richard threatened to expose Brielle. He said he would make sure she spent the rest of her life in prison unless I signed over control of the trust.""
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"I tried.""
He looked down.
"The first doctor who treated me was working with Richard. They changed my medication and falsified my medical records. I suffered a severe reaction. Afterward, I couldn't remember entire days.""
I felt tears gathering.
"Then why did they keep you alive?""
"Because Richard needed my signature.""
James frowned.
"But you were declared dead.""
Robert nodded.
"Richard arranged for a false death certificate. He planned to have me sign the final transfer documents once I recovered enough to understand what I was signing.""
"Did you sign?""
"No.""
Robert reached beneath his blanket and pulled out a small envelope.
"I kept something hidden.""
He handed it to Detective Miller.
Inside was a copy of the original trust agreement.
The document included the signatures of my mother, Robert, Eleanor, and Patricia.
There was also a clause explaining what would happen if someone attempted to fraudulently transfer the estate.
Detective Miller read it.
Then he looked up.
"This changes everything.""
Robert nodded.
"It means the forged transfers are invalid. It also means the beneficiaries can request an immediate freeze on every account connected to the trust.""
James looked at me.
"Your mother and Patricia are the rightful controlling beneficiaries.""
I stared at the document.
After twelve years of lies, the truth was finally becoming visible.
But Robert had one more secret.
He looked toward me.
"Margaret, there's something I haven't told you.""
I took his hand.
"What?""
He glanced at James.
Then he said:
"Richard didn't arrange the original accident alone. Brielle was supposed to be protected because someone else was involved.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Who?""
Robert looked toward the doorway.
Eleanor was standing there.
She had arrived with Patricia and Lucas.
Robert's expression became sorrowful.
"Your sister.""
I turned.
"What?""
Robert continued.
"Eleanor was driving the second vehicle that night. But she wasn't following Brielle by accident. She had been instructed to make sure Laura's car never reached the police station.""
Eleanor began crying.
"I didn't know Richard would cause a collision.""
Robert looked at her.
"You knew what he was planning.""
She lowered her head.
"I thought it would frighten them. I never thought Laura would die.""
Patricia stepped forward.
"And Lucas?""
Eleanor covered her face.
"I didn't know Richard would take him.""
Robert's voice became firm.
"Enough.""
He looked at me.
"Margaret, I wanted to protect you from all of this. But the truth is that everyone you loved made choices that brought us here.""
I squeezed his hand.
"And what about you?""
He looked confused.
"What about me?""
"You kept secrets too.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
I leaned forward and kissed his forehead.
"Then we're done keeping secrets.""
A police officer entered the room.
He had received an urgent call.
"Detective Miller, we've located Richard Whitmore.""
James stood.
"Where?""
The officer looked toward Robert.
"At Dallas Love Field. He's attempting to board a private aircraft.""
Detective Miller grabbed his jacket.
"What's the destination?""
The officer checked his phone.
"Switzerland.""
Robert closed his eyes.
"He knows.""
"Knows what?"" I asked.
Robert looked at me.
"That the original trust agreement has been found.""
May you like
Then he added quietly:
"And he knows where the remaining eleven million dollars are hidden.""
