Chapter 11: The Recording That Changed Everything
We reached the underground parking garage through the emergency stairwell.
James called the police while Dr. Hayes arranged for hospital security to escort Patricia and Lucas to a secure location.
But nobody was leaving without the USB drive.
Eleanor held it tightly in her hand.
"I need to tell you something before we go any further.""
I looked at her.
"What now?""
She swallowed.
"The recording isn't the only evidence Robert left behind.""
James stopped walking.
"What else?""
"A second copy of the video.""
Brielle closed her eyes.
"Where?""
Eleanor looked at her.
"Inside your mother's house.""
I frowned.
"My house?""
"Robert hid it in his study. Behind the old photograph of your wedding.""
I remembered that photograph.
Robert and I standing beneath an oak tree, laughing as the photographer tried to make us pose.
It had hung above his desk for nearly thirty years.
I suddenly felt as though I was standing beside him again.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I promised Robert I wouldn't reveal it unless Richard tried to take your house.""
I looked down at the USB drive.
"And he did.""
Eleanor nodded.
"That's why the trust clause was activated.""
James checked his phone.
"The police are on their way. We need to get Margaret somewhere safe.""
I shook my head.
"I'm going home.""
"Margaret—"
"My husband left something there. I'm not going to spend another night wondering what it is.""
Brielle stepped forward.
"I'll go with you.""
I looked at her.
"No.""
Her face crumpled.
"Mom, please.""
"You've spent twelve years helping people hide the truth. I don't know whether I can trust you.""
She nodded slowly.
"You're right.""
Then she looked at James.
"But I know where the original video is.""
James frowned.
"Eleanor just said it's in Margaret's house.""
"There's another copy.""
Brielle unlocked her phone.
She opened a folder containing several old recordings.
One file was labeled:
LAURA — FINAL NIGHT.
My stomach tightened.
"Where did you get that?""
"Vanessa.""
James took the phone.
"Why would Vanessa have a recording?""
Brielle looked down.
"Because she was in the car behind us that night.""
I stared at her.
"Vanessa was there too?""
Brielle nodded.
"She was following us. She had borrowed Richard's vehicle.""
James looked horrified.
"Why?""
"Because Richard had asked her to watch me. He knew I had been drinking at a party. He didn't want me driving alone.""
I stared at my daughter.
"You were drinking?""
She nodded.
"I shouldn't have been behind the wheel.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was afraid you'd hate me.""
I wanted to tell her that I had already spent the evening discovering reasons to hate what she had done.
But I couldn't.
She was still my daughter.
And Laura was still dead.
"What does the recording show?"" I asked.
Brielle hesitated.
"Everything.""
We played it inside James's car.
The footage was shaky, filmed through a windshield at night.
Two vehicles traveled along a dark road.
One was Brielle's car.
The other was Vanessa's.
Then headlights appeared from the opposite direction.
Brielle swerved.
There was a violent impact.
The camera shook.
For several seconds, nothing was visible.
Then Vanessa's voice came through the recording.
"Oh my God! Brielle, stop!""
A younger Brielle began screaming.
"Laura! Laura!""
The camera moved closer.
A teenage boy was visible in the back seat.
Lucas.
He was moving.
Then another voice entered the recording.
Richard.
"Get away from the car.""
Vanessa sounded terrified.
"Mr. Whitmore, Lucas is alive!""
"I can see that.""
"Call an ambulance!""
Richard turned toward her.
"Do exactly what I tell you.""
Then something happened that none of us expected.
Richard looked directly at the camera.
And said:
"Nobody is leaving this road until I know who else saw what happened.""
The recording ended.
James stared at the phone.
"That's not enough to prove he killed Robert.""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Keep watching.""
There was another file.
This one had been recorded several days later.
It showed Richard speaking inside his office.
His voice was clear.
"Robert has become a problem.""
A second man answered.
"He's going to the police.""
Richard sighed.
"Then we need to make sure he doesn't arrive.""
The other man asked, "What about Margaret?""
Richard replied, "She won't be a problem if the estate is transferred before the end of the month.""
I felt sick.
James paused the recording.
"Who's the other man?""
Brielle zoomed in on the image.
A man was seated with his back to the camera.
He wore a hospital identification badge.
James leaned closer.
"That's Dr. Malcolm Reeves.""
I looked at the screen.
"Who is he?""
Dr. Carter had mentioned him earlier.
He was a cardiologist who had treated Robert during his final year.
James opened his contacts and searched the name.
Then he found something else.
Dr. Reeves had been listed as a medical consultant for Richard's private investment company.
Eleanor began shaking.
"He was the doctor who approved Robert's medication changes.""
I covered my mouth.
The man who had treated my husband.
The man who had adjusted his prescriptions.
The man whose name appeared on the medical records after Robert's death.
James looked at the recording again.
"There's more.""
He turned the volume up.
Richard's voice became clearer.
"Once Robert is gone, the trust will be easier to control. Margaret won't understand the legal structure. Brielle will sign whatever we put in front of her.""
The second man laughed.
"And the daughter?""
Richard paused.
"She'll do what she's told. She's already responsible for one death. She won't risk another.""
I felt tears running down my face.
Brielle covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
Then Richard said something that made James freeze.
"There's only one person who could still destroy everything.""
The other man asked, "Who?""
Richard answered.
"Patricia.""
James stopped the recording.
"Patricia is in danger.""
I immediately called Dr. Hayes.
No answer.
I tried again.
This time someone picked up.
It wasn't Dr. Hayes.
It was Lucas.
His voice was panicked.
"Margaret, they're here.""
"Who?""
"The people who work for Richard.""
I gripped the phone.
"Where's your mother?""
He began shouting.
"She's gone!""
The call disconnected.
James started the engine.
I looked at him.
"Drive.""
He pulled out of the parking space.
But before we reached the exit, another message appeared on his phone.
It came from an unknown number.
There was a photograph of Patricia sitting alone in a black car.
May you like
And beneath it were six words.
*Bring the original trust agreement. Come alone.*
