Chapter 9: What Happened in the Hospital Room

The video began with a timestamp.

9:52 p.m.

The night before Robert died.

Vanessa stood beside his hospital bed wearing a beige coat and holding a small handbag.

My stomach tightened.

"She told me she had never visited him," I whispered.

Thomas leaned closer to the monitor.

"Let's watch.""

The recording had no sound for the first few seconds.

Robert was sitting upright, looking exhausted. Vanessa placed a folder on his bedside table.

Then she pulled a chair closer.

Kevin adjusted the audio.

A faint crackle came through the speakers.

Vanessa's voice became clear.

"Mr. Bennett, Daniel is under a lot of pressure. You need to stop making this difficult.""

Robert looked at her.

"Where is my son?""

"He's parking the car.""

"Then I'll speak to him when he gets here.""

Vanessa opened the folder.

"We don't have time for that. Richard needs the authorization tonight.""

Robert shook his head.

"There's nothing to authorize.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"You don't understand how much money is involved.""

Robert gave a tired laugh.

"I understand perfectly. You're asking me to give away something that belongs to my family.""

She placed a pen on the folder.

"Just sign the document. Daniel will thank you later.""

Robert pushed it away.

"Daniel will have to learn that his father's property isn't his personal bank account.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"You really want to leave your son with nothing?""

Robert stared at her.

"I've left him an education, a home, and every opportunity I could afford. What he does with those things is his responsibility.""

Vanessa stood.

"Richard warned me you would be difficult.""

Robert looked directly at her.

"Then perhaps Richard should have chosen a different family to rob.""

Vanessa grabbed the folder.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

Robert closed his eyes.

"I'm tired. Please leave.""

She turned toward the door.

But before leaving, she stopped.

"One day, Daniel will understand that you ruined everything.""

Robert answered quietly.

"No. One day, I hope he'll understand that I tried to save him.""

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the blank screen.

My husband had faced Vanessa alone in that hospital room.

He had been weak, frightened, and sick.

And instead of comforting him, she had tried to pressure him into signing away his property.

"Was there another recording?"" I asked.

Kevin checked the folder.

"Yes. One from the hallway.""

He opened it.

The image showed Daniel entering the room at 10:17 p.m.

Vanessa was already gone.

Daniel sat beside his father.

For a few moments, they said nothing.

Then Robert spoke.

"Son, I need you to tell me the truth.""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"About what?""

"About Richard's company.""

Daniel sighed.

"Dad, not tonight.""

"Did you give him my property documents?""

"No.""

Robert stared at him.

"Daniel.""

My son's face changed.

"I gave him a copy of the survey.""

Robert closed his eyes.

"Why?""

"He said he needed it to secure investors.""

"Did you tell him he could use the land as collateral?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Robert looked toward the window.

"You're my son. I would give you almost anything. But I will not give you permission to destroy your future.""

Daniel stood.

"You never trusted me.""

"I trusted you with my heart. I didn't trust Richard with our family.""

Daniel walked toward the door.

Then he stopped.

"Mom will always take your side.""

Robert looked at him.

"Your mother has stood beside me through every difficult year of our lives. She deserves honesty, not another burden.""

Daniel left.

The recording continued for another minute.

Robert was alone.

He reached toward the bedside table and picked up his phone.

He dialed a number.

Thomas.

The audio became faint, but the words were still understandable.

"Thomas, it's Robert. I need you to make one final change. If Daniel is involved in this, I want Margaret protected completely.

And there's something else. If Richard tries to use the hospital visit against her, make sure you preserve the original records.""

The recording ended.

I covered my mouth.

Thomas removed his glasses.

"Your husband knew he was in danger of losing control of the situation. He wanted to protect you.""

I looked at Daniel.

He hadn't moved.

"Did you know Vanessa visited your father that night?""

He shook his head slowly.

"No.""

"Did you know she tried to get him to sign?""

"No.""

I wanted to believe him.

But believing him had become dangerous.

Thomas closed the computer.

"We need to preserve these files and provide copies to the appropriate investigators. The lender must also receive formal notice disputing the loan documents.""

Daniel suddenly stood.

"I'll tell them everything.""

Thomas looked at him.

"Are you prepared to explain your own involvement?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"That may have legal consequences.""

"I know.""

He turned toward me.

"Mom, I'm sorry.""

I looked at his face.

For the first time since the wedding, I saw no excuses.

Only fear.

But I wasn't ready to forgive him.

"Daniel, I need you to understand something. An apology doesn't repair a forged signature. It doesn't return my retirement savings. And it doesn't erase what you did to your father.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of my house.

Taken from across the street.

Beneath it were seven words.

*STOP THE INVESTIGATION OR LOSE YOUR HOME.*

I showed Thomas.

He immediately called the police to report the threat and arranged for the message to be preserved.

"Margaret, don't go home alone tonight.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the photograph.

"Mom, I know who sent that.""

Thomas turned toward him.

"Who?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Richard.""

"How do you know?""

Daniel pulled out his phone.

"Because he sent me something similar last week.""

He opened his messages and showed us a conversation.

Richard had written:

*Your mother needs to understand that we can make this difficult for her. If she refuses to cooperate, remind her that the property isn't the only thing we have access to.*

I stared at the screen.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he opened another message.

This one contained an attachment.

A photograph of my house's front door.

But the timestamp was from two nights earlier.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He lowered his head.

"Because I thought Richard was bluffing.""

Thomas took the phone.

"Did Richard have access to your mother's house?""

Daniel nodded.

"He has a key.""

My blood ran cold.

"How?""

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Vanessa made a copy when she visited you after the engagement. She said she wanted to surprise you with a birthday gift.""

I remembered that afternoon.

Vanessa had insisted on helping me prepare lunch. She had asked where I kept the spare keys.

I had trusted her.

Thomas immediately contacted the police again and advised me not to return home until the property had been checked.

Then Daniel said something that made the room go silent.

"There's something else, Mom.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He took a deep breath.

"Richard didn't just want Dad's land. He wanted something buried beneath it.""

I frowned.

"The mineral deposits?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. Dad told me about a second discovery. Something the survey company found that could make the land worth much more than millions.""

Thomas slowly turned toward him.

"What discovery?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"An underground water source. A major one. Dad had been negotiating with a regional water company before he died.""

I stared at him.

Robert had never mentioned it.

Daniel continued.

"Richard knew about it. He said whoever controlled the property could sell the water rights for a fortune.""

Thomas immediately reopened the folder.

"There's nothing about water rights in the documents we've reviewed.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Because Dad kept that report separate.""

I remembered the sealed letter.

The flash drive.

The old workshop.

Then Daniel whispered the words I would never forget.

"Mom, Richard didn't need you to sell the land. He needed you to sign one document giving him access to the underground water rights. And once he got that, he could take control without buying the property at all.""

Thomas looked at me.

"Margaret, do you have any idea where your husband kept the original water survey?""

I thought about the metal box.

The letter.

And the last sentence Robert had written.

If anyone tries to transfer the property, contact Thomas immediately.

I shook my head.

"No. But I know someone who might.""

Daniel looked up.

"Who?""

I remembered Robert's younger brother, William.

He had helped Robert establish the original property boundaries decades earlier.

And he had disappeared from our lives shortly after Robert's funeral.

I took out my phone and searched for his old number.

May you like

Before I could press call, a message arrived from him.

*Margaret, I heard about the wedding. I need to see you immediately. I know what Robert discovered beneath that land. And I know why he never told Daniel.*
