Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything

I stood alone in the workshop, holding the flash drive.

Outside, the wind moved through the pine trees.

Daniel was still on the phone.

"Mom, are you listening?""

"Yes.""

"Give me the flash drive.""

I looked at the small black device in my palm.

"Why?""

"Because it belongs to Dad's business.""

"Your father left it for me.""

"That's not what I mean.""

"Then explain.""

He exhaled sharply.

"Those recordings could destroy people.""

I looked toward the old desk.

"People who did something wrong?""

"Mom, please.""

"Did you steal from your father?""

Silence.

Then he said, "I made mistakes.""

"Did you forge my signature?""

"That wasn't supposed to happen.""

I closed my eyes.

The answer was enough.

"Who was supposed to sign it, Daniel?""

He didn't respond.

"Your wife? Her father? Or were you planning to sign my name and hope I never noticed?""

"Mom, you don't understand the situation.""

"Then help me understand.""

He lowered his voice.

"Richard had investors waiting. We needed the property documents to secure the funding. The wedding was supposed to be a celebration after the deal closed.""

I stared at the phone.

"So the wedding was part of the plan?""

"No. The wedding was separate.""

"Then why did Richard receive $28,000 from my wedding account?""

Another silence.

Finally, Daniel said, "He needed the money for legal fees.""

"Legal fees for what?""

"Getting the property transferred.""

My knees weakened.

I sat on Robert's old chair.

"You used my wedding money to pay someone to steal my land?""

"That's not fair.""

"Then tell me what's fair about it.""

Daniel's voice became desperate.

"Mom, I was trying to secure our future. Vanessa and I wanted to build something. Richard promised that we'd all benefit.""

"And what would I receive?""

"You'd have the money from the sale.""

"After you took the land?""

He didn't answer.

I looked at Robert's letter.

"Your father told you no, didn't he?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Yes.""

"And you did it anyway.""

"Mom, he was being unreasonable!""

I stood abruptly.

"Your father spent his entire life building that property. He worked through storms, injuries, and years when we barely had enough money for groceries. You don't get to call him unreasonable because he refused to hand it over.""

Daniel began speaking over me.

"Mom, listen. Richard has connections. He can make this disappear. Just give him the flash drive and sign the settlement.""

"What settlement?""

"I'll send it to you.""

A message appeared on my phone.

It contained a PDF attachment.

I opened it.

The document was titled:

*FAMILY PROPERTY SETTLEMENT AND RELEASE.*

It offered me $450,000 in exchange for transferring the twelve acres and releasing all claims against Daniel and Richard's company.

But there was another clause.

A clause stating that I acknowledged authorizing the original loan and accepting responsibility for all financial obligations associated with it.

I felt my hands go numb.

They weren't simply trying to take my property.

They wanted me to sign a document making me responsible for their actions.

"Daniel, do you expect me to sign this?""

"Mom, it's the only way to protect everyone.""

"Everyone except me.""

"You're my mother!""

"Then why are you doing this?""

His voice cracked.

"Because I made a promise, and I can't get out of it!""

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"What promise?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel, what did you promise Richard?""

The line went quiet.

Then the call ended.

I immediately sent the document to Thomas.

His response came less than a minute later.

*DO NOT SIGN. I am contacting the lender and preparing an emergency filing.*

I placed the flash drive inside my handbag and locked the workshop.

On the drive home, I stopped at a small grocery store.

I bought milk, bread, and a package of cookies.

Ordinary things.

The kind of things I had bought for Daniel when he was growing up.

I remembered how he used to sit at the kitchen counter after school, telling me about his day while I prepared dinner.

I wondered when that boy had disappeared.

Or whether I had simply refused to see the man he had become.

When I reached home, a black SUV was parked outside my house.

Richard Cole stood beside it.

Vanessa was in the passenger seat.

I stepped out of my car.

"What are you doing here?""

Richard smiled.

"We've come to offer you one last opportunity to resolve this peacefully.""

I locked my car.

"I already have an attorney.""

"That doesn't mean you understand what you're facing.""

Vanessa opened the passenger door.

Her wedding makeup was gone, and her hair was pulled into a tight ponytail.

She looked furious.

"Margaret, give my father the flash drive.""

I stared at her.

"How do you know about it?""

She glanced at Richard.

He shot her a warning look.

Too late.

I understood.

"Your father knows what's on it.""

Richard stepped closer.

"Those files are confidential business materials. They have nothing to do with you.""

"Then you won't mind explaining why my husband's last letter specifically instructed me to keep them.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're turning this into something it isn't.""

I looked at her.

"Your father took $28,000 from my wedding account. Your husband forged my signature. And both of you tried to use my property as collateral. What exactly should I call it?""

Richard's pleasant expression vanished.

"Listen carefully, Margaret. The people involved in this development have invested substantial money. You are interfering with a project worth millions.""

"Then perhaps you should have bought the land legally.""

He moved closer.

"You're making enemies you cannot afford.""

I reached for my phone.

"Are you threatening me?""

He stepped back.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Just give us the drive. Daniel has already suffered enough.""

I looked at her.

"Where is Daniel?""

She hesitated.

"At home.""

"Then why isn't he here?""

Neither answered.

I opened my front door.

"Leave my property.""

Richard smiled coldly.

"Tomorrow morning, you'll receive a visit from the bank. When they explain what happens to property used as collateral, perhaps you'll become more reasonable.""

They returned to the SUV.

I watched them drive away.

Then I called Thomas.

He answered immediately.

"Margaret?""

"Richard just threatened me. He knows about the flash drive.""

"Are you safe?""

"Yes. But I think we need to open it.""

"Not until we make a secure copy. Bring it to my office first thing tomorrow.""

I looked toward the dark window of Robert's old study.

"Thomas, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Daniel admitted he promised Richard something.""

"What did he promise?""

"I don't know. But I think the flash drive will tell us.""

Thomas was quiet.

Then he said, "Margaret, I just received a call from the lender's legal department.""

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?""

"They've found an additional document attached to the loan application.""

"What document?""

"A personal guarantee.""

I gripped the phone.

"Whose name is on it?""

Thomas paused.

Then he answered.

"Yours, Margaret. And according to the document, you agreed to repay the entire $185,000 if the development company defaulted.""

I stared at the front door.

My son hadn't merely used my land.

He had apparently made me responsible for the money he borrowed against it.

But the worst part was still coming.

Thomas lowered his voice.

"There's a second signature on that guarantee. Someone witnessed you signing it.""

"Who?""

He read the name.

*Robert Bennett.*

May you like

My dead husband.

And the date beside his signature was six days after his funeral.
