Chapter 9: My Son's Name Was on the Final Document

"Don't involve Nathan.""

My voice surprised even me.

Daniel looked amused.

"Corinthia, your son is already involved.""

Nathan stepped forward.

"What did my father know about me?""

Daniel placed the brass key inside his pocket.

"That depends on how much your mother has told you about your birth.""

The room became completely silent.

Nathan frowned.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

I felt my fingers go numb.

"Daniel, stop.""

He looked directly at me.

"Edward never told him?""

I shook my head.

"There's nothing to tell.""

Daniel laughed.

"Interesting.""

Michael moved toward the door.

"Daniel, this conversation is over.""

But Daniel pulled out another document.

"Then perhaps you'd like to explain why Edward's final estate plan contains a separate beneficiary declaration.""

He placed the paper on the desk.

Nathan picked it up.

His eyes moved across the first paragraph.

Then he looked at me.

"Mom?""

I couldn't speak.

The document was dated twenty-five years earlier.

It contained a declaration regarding Nathan's legal guardianship, inheritance rights, and an additional provision concerning the family's financial trust.

At the bottom was Edward's signature.

Beside it was mine.

I remembered signing it.

But I remembered it differently.

Edward had told me it was a routine amendment to Nathan's inheritance arrangements.

Daniel tapped the final paragraph.

"Read the last section.""

Nathan did.

Then his face changed.

The document stated that if Edward died before Nathan reached fifty, the trust's principal would remain under my control.

However, if evidence emerged that the beneficiary's identity had been deliberately concealed or misrepresented, an independent review would be triggered.

Nathan looked confused.

"What identity?""

Daniel leaned back.

"Ask your mother.""

I grabbed the document.

"You're twisting words.""

"Am I?""

Michael stepped forward.

"Daniel, you've already said enough.""

Daniel ignored him.

"Edward discovered that the trust's original beneficiary records had been altered. Someone had changed the family identification documents attached to the original account.""

Nathan shook his head.

"Why would anyone do that?""

"Because the trust was established before you were born.""

I looked at Michael.

He was pale.

"Did you know?"" I asked.

He shook his head.

"No. I swear.""

Daniel smiled.

"Of course you didn't. You only handled the legal paperwork.""

Nathan looked at me.

"Mom, what is he talking about?""

I took a breath.

"Your father and I adopted you when you were six months old.""

Nathan stared at me.

"I know that.""

"We never hid it from you.""

"I know!""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes. But there was another detail.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't.""

He continued anyway.

"Your biological family had a financial connection to Edward's grandfather's vineyard. A connection that gave the child a separate inheritance claim.""

Nathan slowly sat down.

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

"Edward loved you as his own son. Nothing about this changes that.""

Nathan looked at me.

"Then why did he keep it secret?""

I wanted to answer.

But I didn't know.

Daniel opened his briefcase again.

He removed an old photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a baby outside a hospital.

On the back was a date.

The date Nathan had been born.

And beneath it was a handwritten name.

I recognized the woman's face.

She had visited Edward once, years earlier.

I remembered the argument that followed.

Edward had told me she was an old family acquaintance.

Now I understood why he had refused to explain.

Nathan took the photograph.

"Who is she?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Her name was Eleanor Whitmore. She was the daughter of Edward's grandfather's former business partner.""

Michael frowned.

"That family has been gone for decades.""

"Not entirely," Daniel replied.

He placed another paper beside the photograph.

It was an old trust declaration.

The original beneficiary had been listed as the biological child of Eleanor Whitmore.

Nathan's name appeared beneath it.

I looked at my son.

"Edward knew about this?""

Daniel nodded.

"He discovered the connection shortly before his death. That's why he moved the money into the private trust. He wanted Nathan protected from anyone who might use the inheritance to manipulate him.""

Nathan stared at the document.

"So the money was mine?""

"Eventually," Daniel replied.

"But your father wanted you to reach fifty before receiving it.""

"And Harlow knew?""

Daniel looked at her.

"She knew enough.""

Harlow stepped forward.

"I was trying to secure our future.""

Nathan stood.

"You forged my mother's signature. You stole money from my inheritance. You destroyed my father's wine.""

"I did it for us!""

"No. You did it for yourself.""

Harlow slapped him.

The sound echoed through the study.

Nobody moved.

Then she grabbed her purse.

"I'm done with this family.""

Michael stepped toward the hallway.

"Stay here. The police are arriving.""

Daniel laughed.

"You think the police can solve this? The money is gone. The certificates are missing. And the original trust document is in a place none of you can access.""

I looked at the brass key in his pocket.

"Where?""

Daniel smiled.

"At the Nevada storage facility. But there's one condition.""

"What condition?""

He leaned toward me.

"You must come alone.""

Michael immediately shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

Daniel continued.

"Bring the original 1982 Bordeaux certificate. Bring the adoption declaration. And bring the woman who signed the final transfer.""

I frowned.

"What woman?""

Daniel pulled a final photograph from his briefcase.

It showed a woman entering a bank.

Her face was unmistakable.

I had seen her at Edward's funeral.

She had stood beside me, held my hand, and cried when the coffin was lowered.

She was Edward's younger sister.

My sister-in-law, Vivian.

But Vivian had died six months earlier.

I stared at the photograph.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel slipped it back into his briefcase.

"Apparently, she isn't as dead as everyone believes.""

Then the front door burst open.

Two police officers entered the hallway.

"Nobody move!""

Daniel raised both hands.

But before the officers reached him, he looked directly at me and whispered:

"Ask Michael what happened to Vivian's body.""

May you like

Michael closed his eyes.

And I realized that the wine, the missing millions, and the forged signatures were only the beginning of Edward's final secret.
