Chapter 12: The Recording That Exposed My Daughter-in-Law

I replayed the recording.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

Harlow's voice was unmistakable.

"Edward, you should have given us the money when we asked.""

Edward answered weakly.

"There's no money for you, Harlow.""

She laughed.

"Don't pretend you haven't been moving things around. Daniel showed me the accounts.""

"Daniel is using you.""

"He's helping me.""

Edward coughed.

Then his voice became clearer.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

Harlow replied:

"No, Edward. You made the mistake when you decided Nathan would inherit everything without letting me control it.""

The recording ended.

Nathan stood frozen.

"My wife...""

He couldn't finish the sentence.

Vivian reached across the table.

"There's more.""

She removed another memory card from her handbag.

"Edward recorded several conversations. I managed to recover these before Daniel took the original files.""

Michael arrived forty minutes later.

He had been released after questioning, pending further investigation.

When he saw Vivian, he stopped in the doorway.

"You're alive.""

Vivian gave him a cold look.

"Disappointed?""

Michael shook his head.

"No. Relieved.""

He placed his briefcase on the desk.

"I've been trying to contact you for six months.""

Vivian laughed bitterly.

"You could have started by telling Corinthia what you knew.""

Michael lowered his eyes.

"I was afraid.""

I stood.

"Afraid of what?""

"Daniel had evidence that I had signed the first administrative authorization. I knew the document was fraudulent, but I had signed it believing Edward had approved the transaction.""

"Why didn't you report it?""

"Because I discovered the mistake too late. By then, the money had disappeared, and Daniel had begun threatening my family.""

Vivian shook her head.

"Your silence allowed him to continue.""

Michael nodded.

"You're right.""

He opened his briefcase.

"I've brought something important.""

He placed a thick folder on the desk.

Inside were copies of financial transactions, medical reports, and communications between Daniel and Harlow.

One email caught my attention.

It had been sent five days before Edward died.

*Subject: Final arrangement.*

The message read:

The medication schedule must remain unchanged. Once Edward is gone, the trust will become accessible through the temporary authorization. Make sure the original wine certificates are removed before the estate inventory.

I felt my stomach turn.

Nathan read the email.

"She planned this.""

Michael nodded.

"There's evidence of coordination between Harlow and Daniel. But the medical evidence is what matters now.""

He showed us the laboratory report.

An independent toxicology specialist had reviewed Edward's archived samples.

The findings suggested exposure to a substance that could have contributed to the cardiac complications recorded in his medical history.

I sat down.

For months, I had believed my husband died because his heart finally gave out.

Now I was learning that someone might have helped it fail.

Nathan paced the room.

"Where is Harlow?""

"At the police station," Michael answered.

"She was questioned after the New Year's Eve incident.""

"Can they arrest her?""

"They're investigating the financial crimes and the destruction of the wine. The new evidence will be forwarded to the appropriate investigators.""

I looked at Vivian.

"What about the original Bordeaux?""

She opened her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed a wine bottle inside a wooden presentation case.

The label was unmistakable.

1982 Bordeaux.

Edward's anniversary bottle.

My eyes filled with tears.

"Where is it?""

Vivian smiled sadly.

"I found it.""

She explained that Edward had arranged for the original collection to be transferred to a secure warehouse in Nevada. The bottles had been placed under a preservation agreement that required two separate authorization codes before anyone could access them.

Daniel had obtained one.

Harlow had obtained the other.

But neither had the final ownership certificate.

Edward had kept it.

And according to Vivian, he had given it to someone he trusted completely.

I looked at Michael.

"Who?""

He opened the final page of Edward's estate file.

There was a handwritten note.

The original certificate is held by the person who never asked me for money.

I thought about Edward's friends.

His employees.

His relatives.

Then Vivian spoke.

"He gave it to me.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small sealed envelope.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a certificate bearing Edward's signature, the warehouse registration number, and a second document.

A letter.

My dearest Corinthia,

If this letter has reached you, then the people who wanted my collection have finally shown their true faces.

The wine was never intended to make you rich.

It was intended to make the people responsible reveal themselves.

I stopped reading.

Michael leaned closer.

"Keep going.""

The next paragraph read:

There is one final condition attached to the trust. The person who destroyed the collection, falsified the inventory, and attempted to transfer the vineyard will forfeit any claim to the family assets.

Nathan looked up.

"Does that mean Harlow gets nothing?""

Michael nodded.

"If the evidence is confirmed, she has no legitimate claim under the trust.""

I continued reading.

Then I reached the final lines.

Corinthia, the person who helped me prepare this arrangement was someone you have known for twenty-nine years.

Someone who has loved our son.

Someone who agreed to keep one final promise.

I frowned.

"Who?""

Vivian looked at me.

Michael went pale.

Nathan stared at the letter.

Then the study door opened.

A young woman stood there holding a thick envelope.

She looked directly at Nathan.

"Mr. Bellmont? My name is Rachel Whitmore. I'm Eleanor's granddaughter.""

Nathan stood.

"Why are you here?""

She placed the envelope on Edward's desk.

"Because my grandmother told me to find your family if anything happened to her.""

I looked at the envelope.

It bore Edward's handwriting.

But beneath the address was something I had never expected to see.

*TO THE PERSON WHO KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THE NIGHT NATHAN WAS ADOPTED.*

Rachel opened the envelope.

And the first photograph inside showed Edward holding a newborn baby.

But he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was Harlow's mother.

Rachel looked at Nathan.

"There's something about your adoption that your father never told you.""

Then she turned the photograph over.

May you like

Three words were written on the back.

*THE WRONG BABY.*
