Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew My Husband

The voice on the phone belonged to a woman.

An older woman.

Someone who sounded tired.

Someone who sounded like she had been carrying a secret for years.

“My name is Evelyn Parker.””

I froze.

Harrison looked at me.

“Do you know her?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I did.

Evelyn Parker had worked with my husband for nearly twenty years.

She had been his assistant.

His most trusted employee.

And after his death…

She vanished.

Harrison noticed my reaction.

“Mom?””

I whispered.

“She knew your father.””

The voice continued.

“I need to speak with both of you.””

Harrison tightened his grip on the phone.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Evelyn said:

“Because your father was afraid someone would come after his family.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Harrison put the phone on speaker.

“Tell us everything.””

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“Your father discovered financial fraud inside his company.””

I looked at Harrison.

“Sloan?””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“Not at first.””

That answer scared me.

“Then who?”” Harrison asked.

Another pause.

“His business partner.””

The room went quiet.

The same man from the photo.

The same man connected to Sloan.

Evelyn continued.

“Your father found missing money. Fake accounts. Unauthorized transfers.””

I covered my mouth.

“Why didn’t he tell us?””

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

Harrison looked at me.

Then at the phone.

“What does this have to do with my mother?””

Evelyn became quiet.

“Your father suspected someone close to you would try to use the information against your family.””

I closed my eyes.

The letter.

The secrets.

The fear.

It all connected.

“What was in the letter?”” Harrison asked.

Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Your father wanted you to know your mother protected you.””

I looked at Harrison.

Tears filled my eyes.

But Evelyn continued.

“He also wanted you to know she was forced to make a choice.””

Harrison frowned.

“What choice?””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because I knew.

I had never told him.

Not even once.

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“Lorraine had to choose between telling you the truth immediately…”

A pause.

“…or protecting you from someone who was willing to destroy everything.””

Harrison slowly turned toward me.

“Mom?””

I looked down.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

My voice broke.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

The silence was painful.

Then Evelyn spoke again.

“There’s something else.””

Harrison picked up the phone.

“What?””

“Your father did not die without leaving proof.””

My heart stopped.

“What proof?””

Evelyn answered:

“He created a backup file.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the table.

The birthday cake.

The fire.

Sloan’s rage.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

Evelyn continued.

“But someone else does.””

Harrison stood.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Evelyn said:

“Your wife.””

The room became silent.

Again.

Harrison closed his eyes.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“She has the file?””

“She’s been searching for it.””

I looked at the phone.

“But why?””

Evelyn’s answer was quiet.

“Because that file proves who really destroyed your father’s company.””

Harrison looked at me.

“And who is that?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she said:

“The person Sloan has been working with since before she married you.””

My heart stopped.

Before Harrison could respond, we heard a sound outside.

A car door closing.

Then footsteps.

Approaching the house.

Harrison looked toward the window.

“Mom…”

I stood slowly.

Because I knew that walk.

I knew that silhouette.

Sloan was standing outside.

And she wasn’t alone.

Beside her was the man from the photograph.

May you like

And in his hand…

was the missing letter. :::
