Chapter 12: The Contract That Changed Everything

Harrison stood in the middle of the porch holding the document.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Sloan.

Because there was no explanation that could make the paper disappear.

I watched my son’s hands shake.

“Harrison,” Sloan whispered.

He looked at her.

“Don’t.””

One word.

But it carried years of disappointment.

She took a step closer.

“I can explain.””

“Can you?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Victor looked annoyed.

“You’re wasting time.””

Evelyn turned toward him.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“You wasted years.””

Victor glared.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Evelyn almost smiled.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

She pointed at the document.

“This agreement proves Sloan had knowledge of the fraud before Harrison ever met her.””

Harrison looked at Sloan.

“You knew about my father’s company?””

Sloan’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re acting like I hurt him.””

“You lied to me.””

“That’s different.””

I almost laughed.

Different.

That was the word people used when they wanted forgiveness without accountability.

Harrison looked down at the contract again.

“What did you promise him?””

Sloan stayed silent.

Victor answered for her.

“She promised to help locate the backup files.””

Harrison looked shocked.

“Why?””

Victor smiled.

“Because your father hid everything before he died.””

Sloan finally exploded.

“Enough!””

Everyone turned.

Her perfect image cracked.

“You think I wanted this?””

Her voice shook.

“You think I enjoyed pretending?””

Harrison stared at her.

“Pretending what?””

She looked at him.

And for a second, I saw regret.

Then it disappeared.

“I needed access.””

“To what?””

“Your family.””

The words landed heavily.

Harrison looked like he had been hit.

I stepped closer.

“Sloan…”

She looked at me.

“You had everything.””

“No.””

Her voice became bitter.

“I had nothing.””

That was the first honest thing she had said.

But honesty didn’t erase what she had done.

Harrison looked at Victor.

“You used her.””

Victor shrugged.

“She wanted the same thing I wanted.””

“What?””

“The money.””

Silence.

Then Evelyn reached into her folder.

“There’s one more thing.””

She pulled out a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

The handwriting.

The paper.

The seal.

“My husband’s handwriting.””

Evelyn nodded.

“He wrote this after discovering Sloan’s involvement.””

Harrison stared.

“Another letter?””

“Yes.””

I felt dizzy.

“How many were there?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Three.””

Three.

All these years, I thought there was only one.

Harrison opened the envelope.

The first line immediately changed his expression.

He read silently.

Then his eyes lifted toward me.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“He knew Sloan would come after you.””

I felt a chill.

“What else?””

Harrison looked back at the page.

Then whispered:

“He wrote that if Sloan ever found the letter…”

A pause.

“…it meant she had already found the person who helped her.””

Everyone became still.

I looked at Sloan.

She looked at Victor.

And suddenly I understood.

The letter wasn’t the secret.

The person behind Sloan was.

Then Harrison turned the page.

His face went completely pale.

“What is it?””

He slowly lowered the paper.

“Dad wrote a name.””

“Whose name?””

Harrison looked at me.

Then at Sloan.

Then whispered:

“He wrote that the person who betrayed him…”

May you like

A pause.

“…was someone in this family.”” :::
