Chapter 8: The Name Hidden in the Files

The police station smelled like old paper and coffee.

I sat beside Harrison in a small interview room, staring at the folder placed in front of us.

The officer across the table looked uncomfortable.

“I know this is difficult,” he said.

I nodded.

“Just tell us what you found.””

He opened the folder.

“These documents were recovered from a storage unit registered under another name.””

Harrison leaned forward.

“Whose name?””

The officer looked at him.

“Your father’s business partner.””

The room went silent.

The same man from the photograph.

The same man who disappeared after my husband’s death.

I looked at Harrison.

He looked back at me.

Neither of us needed to say it.

Something had been hidden.

For years.

The officer continued.

“The storage unit contained financial records, copies of legal documents, and correspondence.””

“Correspondence with who?”” I asked.

He hesitated.

Then placed another paper on the table.

“Sloan.””

Harrison’s face went pale.

“No.””

The officer didn’t react.

“We found multiple letters.””

I picked one up.

The handwriting wasn’t familiar.

But Sloan’s name was clear.

My fingers trembled.

“What do they say?””

The officer looked at Harrison.

“They suggest your wife had contact with this man before marrying you.””

Harrison stood.

“No.””

I reached for his arm.

“Harrison.””

“No. That’s impossible.””

The officer remained calm.

“We’re not making conclusions. We’re showing you evidence.””

Harrison sat back down slowly.

I watched him struggle.

The woman he loved.

The woman he defended.

The woman he thought was misunderstood.

She was becoming someone he didn’t recognize.

When we left the station, neither of us spoke.

The drive home felt endless.

Finally, Harrison broke the silence.

“I don’t understand.””

I looked out the window.

“I know.””

“She always told me she hated secrets.””

I almost smiled.

A sad smile.

“People who hide the most usually say that.””

He gripped the steering wheel.

“I feel stupid.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

“I defended her.””

“You loved her.””

“That doesn’t excuse it.””

“No.””

I paused.

“But it explains it.””

That night, Harrison asked me to stay at his house.

Not because he wanted comfort.

Because he was afraid of what he might find.

We searched through everything.

Documents.

Emails.

Old boxes.

Then, near midnight, Harrison found something hidden behind a drawer.

A small envelope.

His name was written on it.

Again.

But this time, it wasn’t from his father.

It was from Sloan.

He opened it.

Inside was a single page.

His face changed as he read.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

The letter was dated two months before Sloan married him.

The first line made my stomach drop.

*I know where the original letter is.*

I kept reading.

*If Lorraine doesn’t give me access to the accounts, I’ll make sure Harrison never trusts her again.*

I looked at Harrison.

He looked devastated.

“She planned this.””

I nodded slowly.

But there was one sentence at the bottom.

One sentence that changed everything.

*The only problem is that Lorraine doesn’t know what was really inside the letter.*

My blood ran cold.

Because that meant Sloan had been lying.

She didn’t know the truth.

She only knew there was something powerful inside.

Then Harrison’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

A voice neither of us recognized.

But the first words made my entire body freeze.

“Harrison Caldwell?””

“Yes.””

“This is urgent.””

The voice paused.

“I knew your father.””

Harrison stood.

“Who is this?””

The person answered.

And when I heard the name…

May you like

I dropped the letter.

Because it was the one person I never expected to hear from again.
