Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Luxury Party
I had known Richard Harrington for eleven years.
He was a retired investment banker, a man who wore expensive suits even to casual family gatherings. He rarely raised his voice, but when he spoke, people listened.
He had never been particularly warm toward me.
At our first Thanksgiving together, he'd asked what Robert had done for a living.
When I told him Robert had owned a small auto repair shop, Richard had nodded politely and changed the subject.
He wasn't openly rude.
He simply treated people according to what he believed they could offer him.
So when he asked to speak privately, I knew something serious had happened.
I called him.
He answered immediately.
"Margaret. Thank you for calling.""
"Richard, what's going on?""
"First, I owe you an apology.""
That caught me off guard.
"For what?""
"For the way Brooke treated you last night. I witnessed enough to understand that you were humiliated.""
I sat down.
"You were there?""
"Yes. I arrived around eight.""
"And you saw her send me away?""
"I saw her tell you the food wasn't suitable. I should have intervened.""
I didn't know what to say.
Richard continued.
"But that's not why I'm calling.""
"What happened?""
He exhaled.
"Brooke has been telling people that the Christmas dinner was entirely her idea. She presented herself as the person who organized everything, including the traditional family menu.""
I frowned.
"Why would she do that?""
"Because several of the people attending were potential investors in Ethan's new company. Brooke wanted them to see the Harrington family as financially successful, well-connected, and capable of hosting events at a certain level.""
I looked toward the kitchen.
"That's ridiculous. A Christmas dinner isn't a business presentation.""
"Apparently, Brooke disagrees.""
I heard papers rustling on his end.
"Margaret, did Ethan tell you anything about the catering bill?""
"He said the card was declined.""
"That's part of it.""
I waited.
"The caterer was supposed to receive a deposit two weeks ago. Brooke used a credit card belonging to Ethan's company. The transaction was rejected because the account was over its limit.""
I slowly straightened.
"Over its limit?""
"Yes. And the company has other outstanding obligations.""
My heart began beating faster.
"Richard, what does this have to do with me?""
"Last night, Brooke told several guests that you had agreed to cover the Christmas dinner expenses. She claimed you had offered to provide the traditional dishes and help with the remaining costs.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"I never agreed to pay for anything.""
"I know.""
"Did Ethan tell her that?""
"I don't believe he did.""
I looked at my phone.
Nineteen missed calls.
The desperate messages.
The demand to return.
Suddenly, the pieces were beginning to fit together.
"Richard, are you telling me my son and his wife expected me to pay for their party?""
"I'm telling you that Brooke told people you were helping financially.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"How much?""
There was a pause.
"She mentioned that you had contributed approximately fifteen thousand dollars toward the event.""
I stood up so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.
"Fifteen thousand dollars?""
"That's what she told the guests.""
"Richard, I live on Robert's pension and Social Security. I don't have fifteen thousand dollars sitting around.""
"I understand.""
"Then why would she tell people that?""
"I think you should ask Ethan.""
I closed my eyes.
I remembered something from three weeks earlier.
Ethan had visited me on a Sunday afternoon. He'd brought flowers and sat at my kitchen table while I made coffee.
He'd talked about the new house, his business, and how difficult the holiday season had become.
Then he'd asked whether I still had the money Robert left in our savings account.
I'd told him I did.
He'd asked whether I might consider helping him with a temporary business expense.
I'd said I'd think about it.
But I'd never promised him a dollar.
And I certainly hadn't given him permission to use my name as a financial guarantee.
"Richard," I said carefully, "did Brooke tell anyone where the money came from?""
"She mentioned a family inheritance.""
I felt sick.
"That's Robert's money.""
"I'm sorry, Margaret.""
I sat down again.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Richard said something that made my hands go cold.
"There's another matter. I found a document in the office last night.""
"What document?""
"A letter of financial support.""
"From whom?""
"Your name is on it.""
My mouth went dry.
"What?""
"It states that Margaret Collins has agreed to provide a financial contribution toward Ethan's company and will serve as a personal guarantor for a portion of its holiday operating expenses.""
I stared at the wall.
"I never signed anything like that.""
"That's what I suspected.""
"Richard, is my signature on it?""
"Yes.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I had signed a few Christmas cards that week. I'd signed a birthday card for my neighbor's grandson. But I hadn't signed a financial document.
"Who has the original?""
"Ethan.""
I stood and walked to the window.
Outside, a neighbor was helping his children build a snowman decoration in the front yard. A cheerful Christmas wreath hung on his door.
Everything looked ordinary.
But my family had just become something I didn't recognize.
"Richard, can you send me a copy?""
"I can. But I want you to understand something. There were other people at that party who saw the document.""
"Who?""
"One of Ethan's potential investors. A man named Daniel Mercer.""
I knew that name.
Ethan had mentioned Daniel several times. He was a wealthy real estate developer who had been considering investing in Ethan's company.
"Did Daniel believe it?""
Richard paused.
"He asked Brooke whether you had personally approved the arrangement.""
"And what did she say?""
"She told him you were completely on board.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
Then Richard added quietly:
"Margaret, Daniel asked to speak with you.""
"Why?""
"Because he believes the document may be fraudulent.""
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
A message from Ethan.
*Mom, Brooke says you're talking to her father. Please don't listen to him. He doesn't understand what's happening.*
Another message followed.
*We need to fix this before Monday.*
Then a third.
*Please tell me you haven't spoken to Daniel Mercer.*
I stared at the screen.
How did Ethan know Daniel was involved?
I hadn't even told him about Richard's call.
I looked back at the phone.
A fourth message appeared.
*Mom, whatever you do, don't show anyone the document you signed last month.*
My breath caught.
I hadn't signed any document last month.
Not one.
And suddenly, I understood why my son had called nineteen times.
It wasn't because he missed me.
It wasn't because he regretted letting Brooke humiliate me.
May you like
It was because something bearing my name was about to destroy the life he had built.
And I had a terrible feeling that the real Christmas disaster hadn't even begun.
