Chapter 13: The Investor Who Was Also a Victim
"Someone used your identity too?""
I repeated Daniel's words, trying to understand what he was telling me.
"Yes," he replied.
"And I think Brooke has been doing this much longer than we realized.""
Patricia immediately moved closer to the phone.
"Mr. Mercer, this is Patricia Wells. Please explain exactly what you've discovered.""
Daniel sounded exhausted.
"Three weeks ago, Brooke asked me to review a private investment opportunity. She said she had secured additional financing through Ethan's company and wanted me to provide temporary capital.""
"Did you transfer money?"" Patricia asked.
"No. I refused.""
"Then why is your name connected to the $150,000 transaction?""
"Because someone created an investment account in my name. The account received the money, then transferred most of it to another financial institution.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who opened the account?""
"I don't know yet. But the application contains my personal information and an electronic signature that isn't mine.""
Patricia took notes.
"Can you send us the account documents?""
"I already have them. I'll bring everything to your office tomorrow.""
After the call, Patricia sat silently for several seconds.
Then she looked at me.
"Margaret, this may be much larger than a family financial dispute.""
"What do you mean?""
"I mean we may be looking at an organized pattern of identity misuse, fraudulent lending, and unauthorized transfers.""
Richard lowered himself into a chair.
"Brooke has been living like a millionaire while everyone around her pays the bills.""
I thought about the Christmas party.
The champagne fountain.
The imported decorations.
The expensive clothing.
The way she'd inspected my pot roast as if it were something shameful.
She'd wanted everyone to believe she was wealthy.
But she'd been using other people's money to maintain that illusion.
The next morning, Daniel arrived at Patricia's office with a briefcase.
He looked older than he had the previous week.
He placed several documents on the conference table.
"These are copies of the account-opening records," he explained.
Patricia examined them.
The account had been opened under Daniel's name at a private financial institution. The address was a commercial office building in downtown Raleigh.
Daniel pointed to the authorization page.
"That's not my signature.""
Patricia compared it with his driver's license.
"You're right.""
I looked at the transaction history.
The $150,000 transfer had been divided into smaller payments.
One went to a company called BH Lifestyle Holdings.
Another went to a luxury vehicle dealership.
A third went to a private event-planning company.
I looked up.
"The Christmas party?""
Daniel nodded.
"That's what I suspect.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Why would Brooke use your identity to pay for her own party?""
Daniel opened another folder.
"Because the party wasn't simply a family celebration.""
He removed a printed guest list.
Several names were familiar.
Business owners.
Real estate developers.
Two private lenders.
And one man whose name made Richard visibly uncomfortable.
"Victor Lang," Richard said.
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly.""
I looked between them.
"Who is Victor Lang?""
Richard answered.
"He was a business associate of Brooke's before she married Ethan. He specializes in private lending.""
"Is that good or bad?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Let's say his business practices have attracted considerable scrutiny.""
Patricia examined the guest list.
"Why was he invited to the Christmas party?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because Brooke was trying to secure another loan.""
I remembered the gold invitation card.
An Evening of Elegance and Tradition.
It suddenly seemed ridiculous.
The party had been a performance.
Brooke hadn't been celebrating Christmas.
She'd been selling an image.
Daniel continued.
"According to the messages I've recovered, Brooke intended to present Ethan's company as a growing property-management business with substantial family backing. She wanted investors to believe she had access to several million dollars in assets.""
"Several million?"" I whispered.
"Yes.""
Richard shook his head.
"She doesn't have anything close to that.""
"That's why she used our names," Daniel replied.
Patricia leaned forward.
"Do you have evidence connecting Victor Lang to the unauthorized transfers?""
Daniel placed another document on the table.
"An email from Brooke.""
The message was short.
The Collins property is secured. The trust funds have been moved. Daniel's account will show the remaining investment capital. Once the Christmas presentation is complete, Victor can release the next financing tranche.
I felt cold all over.
"The Collins property is secured?""
Patricia nodded.
"She's referring to your home.""
Daniel continued.
"There's another email. This one was sent the night of the Christmas party.""
He read it aloud.
The mother-in-law refused to cooperate. We may need to accelerate the guardianship process before she interferes further.
My stomach twisted.
"She called me the mother-in-law.""
Richard looked disgusted.
"After everything you've done for that family.""
I stared at the papers.
"Was Ethan involved?""
Daniel hesitated.
"His name appears in several messages. But I can't yet establish what he knew about the separate account or the arrangements with Victor.""
Patricia closed the folder.
"Then we'll establish it through the evidence.""
That afternoon, we received confirmation that the fraudulent property lien had been formally challenged. The lender had placed a temporary hold on enforcement while its fraud department investigated.
It wasn't over.
But my home was no longer in immediate danger.
Then Patricia received another call.
She listened without speaking.
Her expression grew serious.
Finally, she said, "Thank you. Please preserve everything.""
She ended the call.
"What happened?"" I asked.
"The authorities have located Melissa.""
"Is she safe?""
"Yes. She's agreed to provide a formal statement and surrender the original electronic records.""
I released a breath.
Then Patricia added:
"There's something else. Brooke has been located.""
Richard stood.
"Where?""
"At the private residence of Victor Lang.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"That's exactly what I was afraid of.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Ethan.
*Mom, Brooke called me. She says Victor is threatening her. Please don't let anything happen to her.*
I stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
*She also says she has something that belongs to Dad. Something he left behind.*
My heart began pounding.
I called Ethan.
"What does she have?""
His voice was almost a whisper.
"Dad's original trust agreement.""
I looked at Patricia.
"How?""
Ethan hesitated.
"She found it in the old company files.""
That was impossible.
Robert had kept the original documents at home.
Or so I'd believed.
Then Ethan said:
"Mom, there's a clause in Dad's agreement that Brooke thinks gives her control over everything.""
And suddenly, I understood.
May you like
The battle wasn't just about the money anymore.
Brooke believed she had found a way to turn Robert's final wishes against the woman he had spent his life protecting.
