Chapter 5: My Wife's Signature Was on the Wrong Document
"That's not my signature.""
I said it before Michael could ask.
The authorization form on his phone carried my full name, Daniel James Carter, followed by a signature that looked disturbingly similar to mine.
It requested that the bank suspend access to my father's safe deposit box pending a review of ownership rights.
I had never seen the form before.
"I didn't sign that," I repeated.
Michael enlarged the image.
"Someone submitted it electronically twenty minutes ago. The bank flagged it because the account requires Richard's written authorization for changes.""
Dad stared at the screen.
"Who submitted it?""
"The request came through a law office representing an entity connected to Mitchell Development Group.""
Vanessa's face went white.
"My father's company?""
"That's what the preliminary record indicates.""
She shook her head.
"No. He wouldn't involve Daniel.""
I looked at her.
"Your father just tried to enter my father's safe, and now someone is using my name to block access. What am I supposed to think?""
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
For once, she had no immediate answer.
Patricia stood up abruptly.
"We need to leave.""
Vanessa turned on her.
"Stop saying that! Every time someone asks a question, you want to leave!""
"Because you don't know what you're dealing with!""
"Then tell me!""
Patricia looked at the guests still watching from nearby tables.
"Not here.""
I let out a sharp laugh.
"Of course. Not here.""
She flinched.
I was done protecting the Mitchell family's reputation while they treated my father like an inconvenience and his property like something they could take.
Michael slipped his phone into his pocket.
"I'm calling the bank's fraud department and preserving the electronic records. Daniel, don't sign anything related to the property until we've established what's authentic.""
"I won't.""
Dad looked at me.
"Son, I need you to listen carefully. Whatever happens tonight, don't let anyone convince you that this is your responsibility to fix.""
"You're my father. Of course it's my responsibility.""
"No."" His voice softened.
"It's my responsibility to tell the truth. It's your responsibility to decide what kind of man you want to be when you hear it.""
I didn't understand what he meant.
Not yet.
Before I could ask, Vanessa grabbed my hand.
"Daniel, we need to talk alone.""
I looked at our joined hands. Her wedding ring caught the light from the chandelier.
Less than two hours earlier, she'd promised to love and honor me in front of our families.
Now my father was surrounded by evidence of a possible financial fraud, and my wife was asking me for privacy.
I pulled my hand away.
"About what?""
"About my father.""
"Then talk.""
She glanced at Dad.
"Not in front of him.""
Dad began to wheel himself toward the quieter end of the ballroom.
"That's fine, son. I'll wait here.""
Something about the way he said it made me feel ashamed.
He had spent the entire evening being pushed aside, and even now he was making room for the woman who had humiliated him.
I turned back to Vanessa.
"You can talk in front of him, or we can talk another day.""
Her eyes flashed.
"You're really going to do this to me on our wedding night?""
"You did this to yourself when you grabbed his wheelchair.""
She stared at me, stunned.
Then she lowered her voice.
"My father is in serious trouble. The company has been struggling for years, and if this foreclosure goes through, hundreds of people could lose their jobs.""
"Then your father should explain what happened to the money.""
"He was trying to save the business.""
"With a forged signature?""
"We don't know that!""
"Then why did someone submit a request using my name?""
She looked away.
I noticed her fingers trembling.
"Vanessa, what aren't you telling me?""
For a moment, I thought she would finally answer.
Instead, she reached into her purse and removed a folded sheet of paper.
"I found this in my father's study three weeks ago.""
She handed it to me.
The document appeared to be a draft agreement between Mitchell Development Group and an entity called Carter Holdings. It outlined a transfer of commercial property in exchange for the settlement of outstanding liabilities.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Edward Mitchell.
The space for my father's signature was blank.
"What is this?"" I asked.
"That's what I wanted to know.""
"You went through your father's private papers?""
"He'd been acting strangely. He kept getting calls in the middle of the night, and whenever I entered the study, he'd close his laptop. I thought he was hiding another financial problem.""
I studied the document.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I thought it was some negotiation. I didn't understand what it meant.""
"Then why bring it to me now?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because when I saw the foreclosure notice, I recognized the company name. I realized my father might be trying to take something from Richard.""
She glanced toward Dad.
"And I know how terrible I've been to him tonight.""
The admission surprised me.
It wasn't an apology, but it was the first honest thing she'd said since the reception began.
I looked down at the paper again.
The draft contained a clause stating that the transfer would become effective once the designated family representative approved it.
The representative's name was Vanessa Mitchell.
I felt a chill crawl up my spine.
"Did you sign this?""
"No!""
"Did you authorize anyone to sign it for you?""
"Absolutely not.""
"Then why is your name here?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"My father told me he needed me to sign some routine paperwork after the wedding. He said it was part of transferring the company to the next generation.""
I stared at her.
"What paperwork?""
"I don't know. I refused until he explained everything.""
"When?""
"Yesterday.""
My heart began pounding.
"Vanessa, did he send you anything electronically?""
She hesitated.
Then she took out her phone.
There was an email from her father's office with an attachment titled Family Business Transition—Final Approval.
The message had arrived the previous night.
I watched as she opened it.
Her face changed.
"Oh, my God.""
"What?""
She turned the phone toward me.
The attachment contained a completed authorization form.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
She shook her head violently.
"I never signed that.""
I looked at the signature.
It was identical to the one on the foreclosure paperwork.
Someone had copied her signature onto multiple documents.
Then I noticed a second attachment.
A scanned page titled Beneficial Ownership Transfer.
The document listed Vanessa as the intended recipient of several commercial properties currently associated with Carter Holdings.
She covered her mouth.
"My father was going to give me your father's buildings?""
"Not give," I said quietly.
"Transfer.""
She looked at me with terrified eyes.
"I didn't know.""
I wanted to believe her.
But before I could answer, Dad rolled back toward us.
He had heard enough to understand.
"Let me see the document," he said.
Vanessa hesitated, then handed him the phone.
Dad studied the screen.
For several seconds, his expression remained blank.
Then he looked at her.
"Vanessa, did your father tell you why he wanted you to marry my son?""
She went rigid.
"What?""
Dad repeated the question.
"Did Edward ever explain why he was so determined that you and Daniel get married before the end of October?""
I looked at my father.
"Why does the date matter?""
Dad turned the phone toward Michael.
"Because the original agreement contains a provision Edward has spent twenty years trying to activate.""
Michael read the document.
His face went pale.
"What provision?""
Dad took a slow breath.
"If Edward could establish a legitimate family connection to my son and obtain the necessary transfer authorization, he believed he could claim a controlling interest in the properties.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's impossible. Marriage doesn't give my father ownership of your property.""
"Not by itself," Michael said.
"But a properly executed agreement, combined with the right corporate filings, could create a complicated legal dispute.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did your father arrange this marriage?""
She began to cry.
"No. We met at a charity event. We fell in love.""
"Then why was he pushing for the wedding date?""
"I don't know!""
Her answer came out so quickly that I believed she was genuinely frightened.
But I still couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing.
Michael scrolled farther down the email.
"There's another file attached.""
He opened it.
It was a calendar invitation from Edward Mitchell's office.
The title read: Post-Wedding Execution Meeting.
The meeting was scheduled for the morning after our wedding.
The attendee list included Edward, Patricia, Vanessa, and an attorney I'd never heard of.
My name was listed as the final participant.
I stared at the screen.
"I never agreed to attend this.""
Vanessa looked horrified.
"I didn't know about this meeting.""
Dad's face hardened.
"Then Edward intended to bring you both in after the ceremony, when everyone would assume the marriage had settled the matter.""
Michael closed the file.
"Richard, we need to get that original agreement tonight.""
Dad nodded.
But before we could move, Vanessa's phone rang.
The caller ID showed her father's name.
She answered with shaking fingers and put the call on speaker.
"Vanessa," Edward said sharply.
"Where are you?""
"At the reception.""
"Get Daniel and leave immediately.""
She swallowed.
"Dad, what did you do?""
Silence.
Then Edward's voice changed.
"Who told you anything?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Why is there a document with my signature on it? Why are you trying to take Richard's buildings?""
Another silence followed.
Then Edward spoke so quietly that everyone leaned closer.
"Because if that safe is opened, sweetheart, you'll discover that the man you just married was never supposed to inherit anything.""
The call ended.
Dad stared at the phone.
May you like
I felt Vanessa's fingers close around mine.
And for the first time that night, I couldn't tell whether she was holding my hand because she loved me—or because she was terrified of what our marriage had just uncovered.
