Chapter 14: My Bride Finally Told the Truth
Every eye in the room turned toward my wife.
Vanessa stared at Michael's phone as if it contained a photograph of someone else.
"No," she whispered.
"I never went to that bank.""
Michael enlarged the image.
The woman in the footage wore a dark coat and sunglasses. Her face was partially obscured, but her posture and height resembled Vanessa's.
The timestamp showed the visit had occurred two days before our wedding.
"Look at the shoes," Vanessa said suddenly.
We leaned closer.
The woman wore black ankle boots with silver buckles.
"I don't own those.""
Dad studied the photograph.
"Could it have been someone using your identification?""
"I don't know.""
Michael immediately contacted the bank and requested the full footage, visitor records, and any available access documentation.
"We shouldn't identify the person based on this image alone," he said.
"But we need to establish whether someone used Vanessa's credentials.""
Vanessa began pacing.
"Two days before the wedding, I was at my mother's house. We were trying on dresses and reviewing the seating chart.""
"Can anyone verify that?"" Michael asked.
"My mother can. So can the seamstress.""
"Good. We'll document that.""
She stopped pacing and looked at me.
"Daniel, there's something else. Something I haven't told you.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Go ahead.""
"Three weeks ago, my father asked me to take a folder to his attorney's office. He said it contained documents for a property transaction and that I needed to deliver it personally.""
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
"What was in it?""
"I don't know. It was sealed.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because I didn't think it was connected to this. I was helping my father with his business. He told me the documents were routine.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Where did you deliver the folder?""
"Gregory Shaw's office.""
Dad closed his eyes.
Vanessa hurried on.
"But I never went to the bank. I never saw the ownership agreement, and I never signed a transfer.""
Michael asked her to describe the folder, the date, and the conversation with her father. He recorded the details carefully.
Then Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a small notebook.
"I wrote down the date because I was angry with him afterward.""
She found the entry.
October 5 — Delivered sealed folder to Shaw's office. Dad said the Carter matter would be resolved before the wedding. Refused to explain what was inside.
Michael photographed the page.
"That may help establish the timeline.""
Vanessa sank into a chair.
"My father used me. He used my name, my wedding, everything.""
I sat beside her, but I didn't take her hand.
"Did you ever suspect he wanted you to marry me because of the properties?""
She stared at her wedding ring.
"Not at first.""
"At first?""
She swallowed.
"About a month ago, I overheard him talking to my mother. He said that once we were married, the Carter properties would become a family matter and you'd have no reason to challenge the transfer.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me then?""
"Because I thought he was talking about a business negotiation. I didn't understand how he planned to use the marriage.""
"Vanessa, you knew he was trying to connect our marriage to the properties.""
She began to cry.
"Yes.""
The admission hurt more than I'd expected.
I stood and walked toward the window.
She hadn't necessarily known about the forged signatures or the construction accident. But she'd heard enough to ask questions, and she'd chosen to remain silent.
When I turned back, she was wiping her cheeks.
"I was afraid," she said.
"My father controlled everything in my life. My job at the company, my apartment, even the money I used. I thought if I challenged him, I'd lose everything.""
"You could have talked to me.""
"I know.""
"You could have told me before we got married.""
"I know.""
Her voice broke.
"I kept telling myself that if I waited, he'd explain everything. I wanted to believe he was protecting the company, not stealing from your family.""
I looked at the ring on her finger.
"Did you marry me because you loved me?""
She answered immediately.
"Yes.""
"Did you know your father expected our marriage to help him obtain control of the properties?""
She looked down.
"I knew he expected it to make the transfer easier. I didn't know he planned to forge documents or that he might have been involved in your father's accident.""
The room went silent.
Dad spoke gently.
"Vanessa, loving Daniel doesn't erase the choices you made. But telling the truth now matters.""
She nodded.
"I'll cooperate with everything.""
Michael received a call from the bank's security director.
He listened carefully, then placed the call on speaker.
The director confirmed that the person who had returned the missing document had used an access credential issued to Vanessa.
However, the credential had been reported lost six months earlier.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"My wallet was stolen six months ago. I reported it to the bank because my debit card was inside.""
The director confirmed that the access credential had been included in the stolen wallet.
Michael asked whether the bank could establish who had used it.
The director explained that the visitor had presented identification and passed the initial security check, but the bank had no definitive facial match.
After the call ended, Michael looked at us.
"This changes the question. Someone had access to Vanessa's credentials, but that doesn't establish that Vanessa returned the document.""
Dad nodded.
"We need to find out who had the wallet.""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
"My father helped me cancel the cards after the theft. He took my wallet to his office because he said his assistant could handle the paperwork.""
I felt a chill.
"Did he return it?""
"Yes. The next day.""
"Was anything missing?""
"I didn't check. I assumed he'd taken care of everything.""
Michael made another note.
"We'll need the theft report, the bank's records, and evidence about who handled the wallet. We should not assume who accessed the safe until the investigation establishes it.""
Vanessa pressed both hands over her face.
"If he used my stolen credentials, he deliberately made it look like I was involved.""
"Possibly," Michael replied.
"But we need proof.""
Dad looked at the old photograph of Edward outside the unfinished building.
"He's been arranging things so that everyone else looks responsible.""
I thought about the forged signature bearing my name, the suspicious entry attributed to my mother, and now the missing document returned under Vanessa's credentials.
The pattern was becoming clearer.
Edward wanted control of the properties. He had access to our personal information. And he was creating a trail of documents that pointed toward everyone except himself.
My phone rang.
The caller was an investigator who had been contacted through Michael's office.
He'd reviewed the preliminary evidence from the warehouse and wanted to speak with us.
"The records suggest the ownership transfer was being discussed before the accident," he said.
"We're now looking into the alleged forgery and the circumstances surrounding the equipment failure.""
"Do you have enough to question Edward?"" I asked.
"We're arranging an interview through his attorney. We also need to establish where the original transfer document came from.""
Michael nodded.
"We have the original partnership agreement and the protected trust amendment. We'll provide copies through the appropriate legal process.""
The investigator paused.
"There's one more thing. We've located a former employee who says Edward asked him to alter a construction invoice shortly before the accident.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Who?""
The investigator gave us the name.
It was Gregory Shaw.
The same attorney who had accompanied Edward to the construction site, submitted the suspicious access request, and received the sealed folder Vanessa had delivered.
Michael immediately requested that the investigator preserve all relevant communications.
When the call ended, Dad looked at Vanessa.
"Your father chose his attorney carefully.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Gregory has been with him for years. He attended every family celebration. He gave me advice when I bought my first car.""
She looked at me, her face crumpling.
"I don't know who any of these people are anymore.""
I wanted to tell her that everything would be all right.
But I couldn't promise that.
We had evidence of suspicious financial activity, a disputed transfer agreement, a possible workplace safety violation, and a witness who claimed he'd been pressured to remain silent.
What we didn't yet have was the complete truth.
Michael gathered the documents into his briefcase.
"Tomorrow, we'll deliver the evidence to the investigators and pursue an order protecting the properties while the authenticity of the documents is examined. No one should transfer or encumber the assets while these questions remain unresolved.""
Dad nodded.
"Do it.""
Vanessa looked at her ring again.
"Daniel, I know I don't deserve another chance. But I want to help make this right.""
I studied her face.
"I don't know what happens to our marriage after this.""
She nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
"I understand.""
"I need time. And I need the truth, even if it destroys everything we thought we had.""
She removed her hand from the table.
"Then that's what you'll get.""
For the first time since our wedding, she wasn't asking me to protect her from the consequences.
She was agreeing to face them.
But just as Michael prepared to leave, his phone rang again.
It was Gregory Shaw.
Michael answered on speaker.
"Mr. Shaw, we've been expecting to hear from you.""
Gregory's voice was smooth and controlled.
"Then perhaps you'll appreciate this. Edward Mitchell is prepared to surrender the disputed transfer document and cooperate with your investigation.""
Dad stared at the phone.
"Why now?""
"Because Mr. Mitchell has discovered that someone forged his signature on a separate financial instrument.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"Are you saying your client is a victim of forgery?""
"I'm saying there is evidence that he may have been deceived as well.""
I looked at Dad.
Edward had spent years hiding documents, moving money, and trying to control the properties.
Now, suddenly, he wanted to cooperate.
It sounded less like remorse and more like an escape route.
Michael asked one final question.
"Mr. Shaw, where is Edward Mitchell now?""
The attorney hesitated.
"He's at home.""
"Then tell him not to destroy or alter any records.""
"I'll convey the message.""
The call ended.
A minute later, Michael received a text from the investigator.
*Edward Mitchell has left his residence. His current location is unknown.*
Dad looked toward the dark window.
"He's running.""
Michael shook his head.
"Not necessarily. But we need to establish where he's going and why.""
May you like
Then Vanessa's phone lit up with a message from her father.
I'm sorry for everything. There's one final document you need to see. Meet me alone tomorrow morning, and I'll tell you what really happened to Richard.
