Chapter 5: The Twelve-Million-Dollar Secret
Vanessa's phone trembled in her hand.
She read the message again, then quickly locked the screen.
Unfortunately for her, I had already seen enough.
"Who sent that?"" I asked.
"No one.""
"Vanessa.""
"It's a stupid prank.""
Charles reached for her phone.
"Let me see.""
She pulled it away.
"Why? Do you know something about it?""
For the first time that night, her father looked genuinely frightened.
"Give me the phone.""
"No!""
Their voices carried across the ballroom.
The guests who had been pretending to check their phones were now openly watching. A few had started recording.
Olivia, the wedding planner, approached with visible concern.
"Mr. Anderson, would you like me to escort your guests to the reception lounge?""
Dad considered it.
"Please do. And ask the catering staff to serve dinner. Everyone deserves to eat, even if the wedding is canceled.""
That simple response nearly broke me.
My father had just been publicly humiliated, and he was still worrying about the people who had traveled to celebrate me.
Olivia nodded and began coordinating with the staff.
Vanessa stepped toward Dad.
"Richard, you can't just dismiss everyone and pretend nothing happened.""
"I'm not pretending anything happened. I'm choosing not to turn your humiliation into their entertainment.""
She looked toward the guests recording on their phones.
"People are going to think I'm a monster!""
I couldn't stop myself.
"You seemed perfectly comfortable being one five minutes ago.""
She recoiled.
"Lucas, how can you say that to me?""
"How could you say those things to him?""
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Charles grabbed Vanessa's elbow and pulled her toward a side corridor.
"We're leaving," he muttered.
She resisted.
"Not until you explain that message.""
"There is nothing to explain.""
"Then show me your accounts.""
His face tightened.
"Have you lost your mind?""
"Show me!""
Jonathan Pierce closed his briefcase.
"Charles, before you leave, I need to inform you that our proposed investment is suspended pending an independent review.""
Charles spun around.
"You can't do that based on an anonymous text!""
"We aren't basing anything on a text," Jonathan replied.
"We're acting on discrepancies identified in your financial disclosures.""
"What discrepancies?""
Jonathan glanced at Dad.
"Perhaps Richard would like to explain.""
Dad shook his head.
"Not here. The documents should speak for themselves.""
He turned toward one of the attorneys accompanying Jonathan.
"Have the audit team send the full report to Charles's counsel. No public accusations until the facts are verified.""
Charles seemed almost relieved.
Then Dad added, "But make sure they examine the transfers involving Westbridge Consulting.""
The relief vanished.
I noticed.
So did Jonathan.
"Westbridge?"" Jonathan asked.
Dad nodded.
"Three transfers. Different dates. Same originating account. The money was recorded as consulting expenses, but the supporting invoices don't appear to exist.""
Charles's lips parted.
Vanessa slowly turned toward her father.
"Dad, what is Westbridge Consulting?""
"It's a vendor.""
"What does it do?""
"Business consulting.""
"Who owns it?""
Charles didn't answer.
She took a step backward.
"Dad. Who owns it?""
He looked at the floor.
That was when I understood this wasn't merely a disagreement over a wedding gift. Something serious had been happening long before my father walked into the ballroom.
Charles finally spoke.
"These transactions were handled by the finance department. I don't personally oversee every vendor.""
Jonathan raised an eyebrow.
"Yet the transfers required executive authorization.""
Charles's expression turned hostile.
"Are you accusing me of stealing from my own company?""
"I'm saying the records need to be examined.""
"After everything I've done to build that company?""
Dad's voice remained quiet.
"Building something doesn't give you permission to misuse it.""
Charles pointed at him.
"You have no idea what pressures I've been under!""
"Then explain them.""
For a moment, Charles looked as if he might confess something.
Instead, he turned on Vanessa.
"This is your fault. You insisted on this ridiculous wedding. You insisted on inviting everyone. You wanted the perfect photographs, the perfect venue, the perfect announcement.""
Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.
"You approved the budget!""
"Because you said the marriage would secure your future!""
The words escaped before he could stop them.
The room fell silent again.
My chest tightened.
"Secure her future how?"" I asked.
Charles rubbed his forehead.
"That isn't what I meant.""
Vanessa looked sick.
"Lucas, don't listen to him.""
But I was listening.
Every word.
My father folded his arms.
"Charles, did you encourage Vanessa to marry my son because you believed he would receive control of the trust?""
Charles's silence answered more than his words could have.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you know about the trust before tonight?""
"No," she said immediately.
Then she hesitated.
"I knew your father had money. I knew he had business interests. But I didn't know about the property.""
"Did your father tell you there might be an inheritance?""
She looked at Charles.
He wouldn't meet her eyes.
"Vanessa," I pressed.
She swallowed.
"Six months ago, Dad said that if we married, our families might finally have access to opportunities that had been out of reach.""
"What opportunities?""
"He said your company could become a partner in one of his developments.""
"My company?""
"Yes.""
I felt a cold weight settle in my stomach.
"Did you ever ask whether I wanted that?""
She looked away.
"Lucas, I was trying to help us.""
"No. You were trying to make decisions about my future without asking me.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I loved you.""
I wanted to ask how she could love me and still be ashamed of my father. I wanted to ask why a man's coat mattered more to her than the years he had sacrificed for me.
Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.
"If my father had arrived tonight wearing a brand-new suit, and that key had turned out to be worthless, would you have treated him differently?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
She looked toward the floor where she had thrown the gift.
Then she whispered, "I don't know.""
That answer hurt more than a lie.
My father approached me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Son, you don't have to decide everything tonight.""
"I've decided enough.""
I removed my wedding ring from my pocket. I had taken it off earlier when the ceremony was interrupted, unable to explain why the gold band suddenly felt like a weight.
I placed it on the table.
Vanessa stared at it.
"No," she whispered.
"I'm sorry.""
"You can't leave me over this.""
"I'm not leaving you because of a key, Vanessa. I'm leaving because of what you showed me when you thought my father had nothing to offer you.""
She reached for me.
I stepped back.
Charles immediately moved between us, but his attention wasn't on his daughter.
He was staring at the second envelope.
"Richard," he said quietly, "before you make any more decisions, there is something you need to know about the property.""
Dad's expression changed.
"What about it?""
Charles swallowed.
"The downtown property you're planning to transfer to Lucas. It isn't just valuable land.""
My father went completely still.
Charles continued, his voice barely audible.
"There's a clause in the original development agreement that could make the entire property subject to a claim.""
Jonathan stepped forward.
"What claim?""
Charles looked directly at my father.
"One that was filed under Eleanor Anderson's name shortly before she died.""
Dad's hand tightened around my shoulder.
For the first time all evening, he seemed genuinely shocked.
"That's impossible," he whispered.
"Eleanor never filed a claim against anyone.""
Charles looked toward the ballroom doors.
"Then someone used her name.""
Before Dad could respond, Jonathan's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds, his expression growing darker.
When he hung up, he looked directly at me.
"Lucas, we have a problem. Someone accessed the archive beneath your family's property this afternoon.""
I felt the silver key pressing against my pocket.
"Who?""
May you like
Jonathan's answer made Vanessa stagger.
"Your mother-in-law-to-be.""
