Chapter 12: The Confession That Changed Everything
Daniel was taken to a nearby hospital under police protection.
My father refused to leave his side until a doctor confirmed that the wound above his eyebrow was superficial and the bruising around his ribs hadn't caused internal damage.
I sat beside the hospital bed, watching Daniel stare at the ceiling.
For fifteen years, I had trusted this man with my company, my finances, and some of my most private fears.
Now I didn't know whether I wanted him to survive long enough to explain himself or whether I could bear hearing what he had to say.
Finally, he turned toward me.
"Lucas, I need to tell you everything.""
"Start with Thomas.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Thomas Anderson died twelve years ago. He was living under another name in Oregon. I met him while investigating irregularities in your family's trust.""
"Why were you investigating it?""
"Because someone approached me with documents proving that your company had unknowingly received money connected to the old trust.""
My stomach tightened.
"What money?""
"Four million dollars transferred through a series of shell companies. The funds were used to cover early operating expenses when your company was struggling.""
I stared at him.
"I thought those investments came from a private equity firm.""
"That's what the paperwork showed.""
"Who arranged it?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Charles Whitmore.""
I felt sick.
"Why would Charles invest in my company without telling me?""
"Because he believed that if you became financially dependent on him, you'd eventually give him access to the Anderson property.""
My father stood near the window, his face rigid.
"And Thomas?""
Daniel continued.
"Thomas had spent years trying to prove that Charles and another investor had stolen money from the family business. He contacted me because he believed your company was being used to launder some of those funds.""
I leaned forward.
"You helped him?""
"At first, yes. I wanted to find out where the money came from. Then I discovered the records connected to your mother's death.""
Dad turned sharply.
"What records?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"An internal report showing that someone had requested maintenance on Eleanor's car the day before the accident. The request was submitted under a false employee number, but the authorization code belonged to Charles Whitmore.""
Dad gripped the windowsill.
"Why didn't you come to me?""
"I was afraid.""
"Of Charles?""
"Of what he would do if he learned I had the report.""
I looked at Daniel.
"So you decided to steal the register instead?""
He shook his head desperately.
"I didn't steal it. I helped retrieve it because I believed the archive was going to be destroyed.""
"Then why did the security footage show you carrying documents out?""
"Because someone had already removed the original register. I was taking the remaining copies to a secure location.""
"And Vanessa?""
Daniel hesitated.
"She gave me her access credentials.""
I stood.
"You just said she wasn't involved.""
"She didn't know what I was investigating. I told her I needed access to the property to retrieve financial documents. She believed me.""
I thought of Vanessa throwing the key onto the marble floor, laughing while my father knelt to retrieve the pieces of the gift box.
Even if Daniel was telling the truth, she had still shown me exactly who she was.
"Who sent me the messages?"" I asked.
"Some of them were me. Others weren't.""
"Which ones?""
"The messages about your mother were mine. I wanted you to question the official story. But I never sent the photograph of myself tied to a chair.""
"Who did?""
Daniel looked toward the hospital door.
"The man at the factory.""
"Who was he?""
"Martin Hale. Charles's former head of security.""
Dad's face darkened.
"I remember him. He disappeared after Eleanor died.""
Daniel nodded.
"He was the person who followed her car that night. Thomas identified him before he died.""
I felt a wave of anger.
"Then why did you let him escape?""
"I didn't know he would be there. He told me he had evidence that could clear Thomas's name. When I arrived, he knocked me unconscious and took my phone.""
Dad stepped closer to the bed.
"Did Charles order him to kill Eleanor?""
Daniel stared at his hands.
"I don't know whether Charles gave the order directly. But I found a payment from Whitmore Development to a company controlled by Hale three days before the accident.""
"That's not enough," Jonathan said from the doorway.
He had arrived with two attorneys and a police investigator.
"We need the original records and corroborating testimony. Daniel's statement is a starting point, not a conclusion.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
The investigator approached the bed.
"Mr. Brooks, did you personally witness Thomas Anderson's death?""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes.""
"Please explain.""
Daniel took a shaky breath.
"I met Thomas at a safe house outside Portland. He had copies of the original trust documents and a statement from Peter Caldwell, the mechanic who inspected Eleanor's car.""
I looked at my father.
"The mechanic was alive?""
Dad nodded slowly.
Daniel continued.
"Thomas planned to return to California and give the documents to Richard. But Martin Hale found us first. He shot Thomas and took the documents. I escaped through the back door, but I was too late to save him.""
"Why didn't you report the murder?"" the investigator asked.
"Because Hale showed me photographs of my wife and daughter. He said they would die if I spoke.""
The room fell silent.
I had known Daniel for fifteen years. I had met his wife at company dinners and sent gifts to his daughter on her birthdays.
I had never known they were being threatened.
"Why did you come back now?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
"Because I discovered that Charles was preparing to transfer the downtown property to a company registered overseas. The transaction was scheduled for tomorrow morning. Once it went through, the original trust records would become almost impossible to recover.""
Jonathan immediately called his legal team.
Dad sat down heavily.
"Then the wedding wasn't the real target.""
"No," Daniel whispered.
"The wedding was a distraction. Charles needed you occupied while Hale searched the archive.""
I remembered the two hundred guests, the extravagant venue, the champagne, the photographers.
All that money spent on appearances while someone attempted to steal my family's history.
Then Daniel reached beneath his hospital blanket and removed a small plastic evidence pouch.
Inside was a memory card.
"The original security footage," he said.
"I copied it before Hale found me.""
The investigator took the pouch and examined its seal.
"Where does this footage come from?""
"An exterior camera at the old Anderson factory. It recorded the night Eleanor died.""
Dad stopped breathing.
"Twenty-five years ago?""
Daniel nodded.
"I found it in the backup archive. The footage was damaged, but enough survived to identify the vehicle that followed her.""
Jonathan looked toward the investigator.
"Can it be restored?""
"Possibly. We'll need a forensic specialist.""
I stared at the memory card.
After twenty-five years of silence, we finally had something that might reveal the truth.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"There's one more thing, Lucas.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He hesitated.
"The footage doesn't just show who followed your mother. It shows who was driving the car.""
My father slowly rose from his chair.
"Who?""
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Charles wasn't driving.""
He swallowed.
"The person behind the wheel was someone your father trusted enough to give a key to the family home.""
I felt my pulse hammering in my ears.
"Who?""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"Your mother's sister.""
I stared at him.
"My mother didn't have a sister.""
Dad's face crumpled.
"She did," he whispered.
"And I thought she died before Eleanor.""
The investigator closed the hospital room door.
Outside, footsteps approached rapidly.
A police officer entered, carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"We've recovered a second envelope from Daniel's vehicle," he announced.
"It contains a photograph and a handwritten statement.""
He placed it on the table.
My father's hands began to shake as he read the name on the envelope.
*Margaret Anderson.*
Then he turned the photograph over.
On the back, my mother's handwriting read:
If Margaret ever returns, don't let her near Lucas.
Dad looked at me with an expression of absolute devastation.
"Son," he whispered, "your aunt has been standing beside us all night.""
I turned toward the hospital door.
And through the narrow glass window, I saw Vanessa watching us.
She was holding a phone to her ear.
May you like
When she noticed me looking, she mouthed three words.
*She's coming here.*
