Chapter 14: The Recording That Ended Everything

“Vanessa!””

Alexander reached her first.

She lay on the concrete clutching her side.

Blood seeped between her fingers.

Adrian ran.

Two officers chased him through the side exit.

Marcus remained on his knees, one hand pressed against his wounded shoulder.

Detective Ruiz kicked his gun away.

“Hands where I can see them.””

Marcus laughed weakly.

“Do I look like I’m going anywhere?””

Ruiz handcuffed him anyway.

I dropped beside Vanessa.

Her eyes found mine.

“Rachel…”

“Don’t talk.””

She grabbed my wrist.

“I need to.””

“Paramedics are coming.””

“I drugged Noah.””

My throat tightened.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Three times.””

Alexander froze.

She looked at him.

“I told myself it was just to make him sleep.””

His face became stone.

“You could have killed him.””

“I know.””

Tears slipped toward her ears.

“I hated the crying.””

Alexander looked away.

Vanessa turned back to me.

“The iron…”

“You don’t have to explain it.””

“Yes.””

She tightened her fingers around my wrist.

“I do.””

Her breathing became shallow.

“I wanted to scare him.””

My stomach turned.

“He was nine months old.””

“I know.””

“You blamed me.””

“I panicked.””

“No. You chose me.””

She stared at me.

I needed her to hear the difference.

“You knew Alexander trusted me. So you decided destroying me might save you.””

Vanessa started crying.

“Yes.””

The word was almost inaudible.

Paramedics rushed in.

As they lifted her onto a stretcher, she caught Alexander’s sleeve.

“Adrian killed Victor.””

Alexander frowned.

“What?””

“Years ago.””

Her eyes fluttered.

“He wanted control of everything.””

The paramedics carried her away.

A burst of radio chatter came from Ruiz’s shoulder.

“Suspect in custody.””

Adrian had been caught.

Alive.

The warehouse seemed to exhale.

Then Alexander walked toward Marcus.

Ruiz stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

Alexander stopped.

Marcus looked up.

“I’m sorry about Emily.””

Alexander’s face tightened.

“Don’t say her name.””

“I never meant for her to die.””

“You spent five years hiding the truth.””

“I was scared.””

“You helped Vanessa get into my house.””

Marcus looked down.

“You helped Adrian target my son.””

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite sentence.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Rachel, Dad never told me about you.””

“Would it have changed anything?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Ruiz led him away.

The black box lay open on the floor.

Documents were scattered across the concrete.

I bent to collect them.

Then I noticed something.

A tiny red light.

Inside the lid.

“Alexander.””

He crouched beside me.

“What?””

I pointed.

Evan hurried over.

He examined the box.

“That’s a recorder.””

My mother had hidden a recorder inside it.

Evan carefully removed the device.

“It’s old, but there’s digital storage.””

Ruiz returned just as he connected it to a laptop.

Several audio files appeared.

Dates spanning years.

My mother had recorded meetings with Charles Whitmore.

With federal investigators.

And with Victor Hale.

One file had been created only months before her death.

Evan pressed Play.

My mother’s voice came first.

“State your name.””

A man answered.

“Charles Edward Whitmore.””

Alexander sat down.

His father’s voice filled the warehouse.

“I confirm that Evelyn Carter helped expose Victor Hale’s criminal use of Whitmore Holdings.””

My eyes filled.

Charles continued.

“I also confirm that Rachel Carter is my biological daughter.””

Alexander reached for my hand.

I let him take it.

“If anything happens to me before I can acknowledge Rachel publicly, eight percent of my personal shares are assigned to her under the enclosed transfer.””

Then came the sentence that silenced everyone.

“And if Marcus contests that transfer, investigators should review Account 7714.””

Marcus, halfway toward the police vehicle, stopped.

Ruiz turned.

“What is Account 7714?””

Marcus went pale.

“No.””

Evan searched the recovered financial records.

Then his eyes widened.

“Detective.””

He turned the laptop.

Account 7714 contained years of transfers.

Marcus to shell companies.

Shell companies to Adrian Hale.

Payments beginning before Emily’s death.

Alexander stared at his brother.

“You weren’t blackmailed into helping them.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You were paying them.””

Silence.

Alexander’s face twisted.

“You hired Adrian.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not for Emily.””

“For what, then?””

Marcus’s voice cracked.

“To pressure Dad into changing the trust.””

“And when Emily found out?””

“I panicked.””

Ruiz stepped closer.

“Did you instruct Adrian or Vanessa to interfere with Emily’s vehicle?””

“No!””

“Did you know she was being followed?””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation destroyed him.

Alexander whispered, “You knew.””

“I didn’t know she would crash.””

“But you knew they were following her.””

Marcus looked at his brother.

“I’m sorry.””

Alexander stepped backward.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You’re sorry you got caught.””

Ruiz led Marcus outside.

Dawn was beginning to lighten the warehouse windows.

For the first time since Noah screamed beside that iron, there was silence.

My phone rang.

Laura.

I answered.

“Rachel?””

Her voice was breathless.

“What happened?””

“Noah woke up.””

Alexander grabbed the phone.

“Is he okay?””

Laura laughed softly.

“He’s perfect.””

Alexander closed his eyes.

Then she added, “And he keeps looking toward the door.””

“For me?””

Laura paused.

“No.””

May you like

I already knew.

“He keeps saying Rachel.””
