Chapter 12: The Daughter He Hid

The cassette hissed.

Nobody moved.

Charles Whitmore was my father.

Alexander stared at me.

I stared back.

“No.””

My mother’s recorded voice continued.

“Rachel, I know this will hurt you. But keeping you away from the Whitmores was the only way I knew to keep you alive.””

I sat on the dusty floor.

My legs couldn’t hold me.

Alexander whispered, “That would make you…”

“My sister.””

The word sounded impossible.

Marcus was Alexander’s brother.

And if my mother was telling the truth, so was I.

My mother continued.

“Charles and I were together before he married Eleanor. When I became pregnant, Victor Hale had already begun threatening everyone who knew about his financial crimes.””

Alexander sat opposite me.

Neither of us spoke.

“Charles wanted to acknowledge you. I refused. I believed anonymity would protect you.””

The tape clicked softly.

“I made Charles promise never to contact you unless the Hale threat disappeared completely.””

Tears ran down my face.

All my life, my mother had told me my father died before I was born.

Another lie.

Or another protection.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””

Her voice trembled.

“I hope one day you understand.””

The tape continued.

“The documents in this box prove Victor Hale used Whitmore companies without Charles’s knowledge to launder money. They also prove Charles later cooperated secretly with federal investigators.””

Ruiz immediately examined the files.

“This could explain everything.””

Alexander looked at her.

“How?””

“The Hales’ claim that Whitmore Holdings belongs to them collapses if these documents are authentic.””

“And Adrian wants them destroyed.””

“Yes.””

Alexander looked toward me.

“He knew Rachel had the key.””

Marcus’s earlier surveillance suddenly made sense.

Eight months of photographs.

Vanessa’s hatred.

My threatening messages.

I had never been merely the nanny who noticed too much.

I had unknowingly been carrying evidence around my neck.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody spoke.

Ruiz nodded.

“Answer.””

I did.

“Hello?””

Vanessa was crying.

“Rachel.””

“Where are you?””

“Listen to me.””

A man shouted somewhere behind her.

She lowered her voice.

“Adrian knows you found the box.””

Ruiz began tracing the call.

“How?””

“Marcus told him about your mother months ago.””

My stomach turned.

“What does Adrian want?””

“The originals.””

“We know.””

“No, you don’t understand.””

Vanessa breathed shakily.

“He doesn’t care about the company anymore.””

Alexander leaned closer.

“What does he want?””

Vanessa heard him.

“Alexander.””

“Where are you?””

“I’m sorry.””

His face hardened.

“Save it.””

“I never wanted this to go this far.””

“You drugged my son.””

Silence.

“I know.””

“You threatened him with an iron.””

“I know.””

“You blamed Rachel.””

“I know!””

Vanessa sobbed.

“I was angry. Noah wouldn’t stop crying. I wanted him quiet. I became exactly what Adrian always told me I was.””

Alexander’s expression remained cold.

“Where is he?””

Vanessa whispered an address.

Evan entered it into his laptop.

An abandoned industrial property south of Dallas.

“Adrian is leaving tonight,” Vanessa said.

“He has passports. Cash.””

“Why hasn’t he killed you?””

Another pause.

“Because I have something he needs.””

“What?””

“The original trust amendment.””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“You stole it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Insurance.””

A male voice suddenly came closer.

Vanessa gasped.

Then she whispered quickly.

“Rachel, Adrian knows who you are now.””

I gripped the phone.

“He knows you’re Charles’s daughter.””

“What does that change?””

Vanessa answered with five words.

“You own part of Whitmore.””

The call ended.

Alexander looked at me.

“No.””

Ruiz asked, “What?””

Alexander grabbed the documents from the black box.

He searched quickly.

One envelope bore Charles Whitmore’s signature.

FOR EVELYN CARTER AND HER CHILD.

Alexander opened it.

Inside was an old stock assignment.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“How much?”” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“Eight percent.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing about my life made sense anymore.

“I’m a nanny.””

Alexander’s eyes filled.

“You’re my sister.””

Ruiz took the document.

“And potentially a major shareholder.””

My phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared.

Vanessa was sitting on the floor of a warehouse.

Her hands were tied.

Adrian stood behind her.

This time his face was clearly visible.

He looked nothing like Vanessa.

Older.

Harder.

He held a gun against her shoulder.

A message followed.

BRING THE BOX.

Then another.

RACHEL COMES ALONE.

Alexander shook his head immediately.

“Absolutely not.””

Ruiz was already coordinating officers.

I stared at Vanessa’s terrified face.

She had hurt Noah.

She had framed me.

She had helped manipulate Alexander.

She deserved justice.

But justice wasn’t the same as letting Adrian kill her.

“We’re going,” I said.

Alexander looked at me.

“You are not going alone.””

“He specifically asked for me.””

“I don’t care.””

“Then we make him believe I’m alone.””

Ruiz studied me.

“You understand this is dangerous.””

“Yes.””

Alexander shook his head.

“No.””

I turned to him.

“For four years, I protected Noah because I thought he was my employer’s son.””

My voice cracked.

“Now I know he’s my nephew.””

Alexander’s eyes filled.

“And Adrian Hale has threatened every member of this family.””

I picked up the black box.

“So we finish this.””

Forty minutes later, police surrounded the industrial property from a distance.

I walked toward the warehouse carrying the box.

Alone.

At least, that was what Adrian was supposed to believe.

The warehouse door opened.

Vanessa sat tied to a chair beneath a hanging light.

Adrian stood behind her.

“Rachel Carter.””

He smiled.

“Or should I say Rachel Whitmore?””

I stopped twenty feet away.

“The box for Vanessa.””

Adrian laughed.

“You think this is about Vanessa?””

He pushed her chair aside.

Then another figure stepped from the darkness.

My breath stopped.

Marcus.

Not tied.

Not injured except for the dried blood on his face.

Standing freely.

Adrian handed him a gun.

Alexander’s brother took it.

And pointed it directly at me.

May you like

“I’m sorry, Rachel,” Marcus said.

“But I’ve waited my entire life to own what should have been mine.””
