Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lies
“Rachel… tell me that isn’t true.””
Alexander Whitmore stood in the nursery doorway, still wearing the charcoal suit he had flown home in. His suitcase lay abandoned somewhere downstairs.
His nine-month-old son was screaming in my arms.
A hot iron rested on the carpet beside Vanessa’s bare feet.
And Vanessa was pointing at me.
“She was hurting him!”” Vanessa cried.
“Alexander, I walked in and saw Rachel standing over Noah with that iron!””
My cheek still burned where she had slapped me.
I could barely feel it.
All I could feel was Noah trembling against my chest.
I had worked for Alexander outside Dallas for almost four years. Before Vanessa arrived, this house had been quiet. Warm, even.
After Alexander married her, everything changed.
Especially when Noah cried.
Vanessa hated crying.
I had seen her slam doors. Turn the television louder. Leave the room while muttering that Noah was “impossible.””
But today was different.
Today I had run upstairs after hearing terrified screams through the baby monitor.
Vanessa had been beside the crib holding a hot iron.
“Shut up!”” she had screamed at Noah.
Then she had moved the iron toward the crib.
I grabbed her wrist.
She slapped me.
And now she was telling Alexander I had done it.
“Give me my son,” Alexander said.
His voice was frighteningly calm.
I carefully placed Noah in his arms.
The moment Noah felt his father, his tiny fingers grabbed Alexander’s shirt.
Alexander looked down.
“Hey, buddy. Daddy’s here.””
Noah kept sobbing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Alexander, call the police.””
I stared at her.
She wanted me arrested.
“Vanessa,” Alexander said slowly, “what exactly did you see?””
“I came upstairs and Rachel was screaming at him.””
“That’s a lie.””
“Shut up!”” Vanessa snapped.
Alexander’s eyes flicked toward her.
Vanessa immediately softened her voice.
“I’m sorry. I’m just terrified. She had the iron near the crib.””
I looked toward the small black camera mounted above the nursery door.
“Sir.””
Alexander looked at me.
“You installed that camera yourself.””
Vanessa froze.
I pointed at it.
“Check the recording.””
The color drained from her face.
Alexander shifted Noah into one arm and pulled out his phone.
“Alexander,” Vanessa said quickly, “wait.””
He opened the security app.
“Why?””
“The camera might not show everything.””
“You just said you walked in and saw Rachel hurting Noah.””
“I did.””
“Then the camera should prove it.””
Vanessa swallowed.
Alexander tapped the screen.
The footage began.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I watched Alexander’s expression change.
Confusion.
Disbelief.
Then something colder.
The video showed me downstairs in the laundry room.
The nursery was empty except for Noah.
Vanessa entered.
She was carrying the iron.
Alexander turned up the volume.
Noah’s crying filled the room.
Then Vanessa’s recorded voice came through the phone.
“Shut up!””
Alexander stopped breathing.
Onscreen, Vanessa leaned over the crib.
“You’ve been screaming for an hour!””
“Alexander,” Vanessa whispered.
He kept watching.
The footage showed me rushing through the doorway.
It showed Vanessa lifting the iron.
It showed me grabbing her wrist.
It showed her slapping me.
Then the recording reached the moment Alexander had entered the house.
Vanessa’s recorded voice became perfectly clear.
“She did it!””
Alexander paused the video.
Silence.
Vanessa backed toward the door.
“I can explain.””
Alexander looked at his wife.
“Explain what?””
“I lost my temper.””
“You moved a hot iron toward my son.””
“I wasn’t going to touch him!””
“You told me Rachel did it.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I panicked.””
Alexander handed Noah back to me.
“Rachel, take him downstairs.””
Vanessa moved toward us.
“No.””
Alexander stepped between her and the baby.
“Don’t touch him.””
Her face twisted.
“I’m his mother!””
“Then start explaining why his mother was standing over his crib with a hot iron.””
Vanessa stared at him.
For one second, the mask disappeared.
There was no crying.
No fear.
Only anger.
“You have no idea what it’s like being trapped in this house with that screaming child every day.””
Alexander’s face went white.
I carried Noah toward the door.
Then Alexander’s phone chimed.
A security notification.
He glanced down.
His eyebrows tightened.
“Rachel.””
I stopped.
“There are deleted recordings.””
Vanessa went completely still.
Alexander looked from the phone to his wife.
May you like
“Three weeks of them.””
Vanessa suddenly lunged for the phone.
