Chapter 14: The Last Bargain

Richard had chosen the old Russo estate for our meeting.

Of course he had.

The house where Dante had discovered his brother was alive. The house where Sophia had learned the truth about her biological father. The house where the Russo family had begun to fall apart.

It was the perfect place for Richard to make one final attempt to control us.

Detective Collins had strongly advised against going.

Dante had listened to her arguments, thanked her for the advice, and then arranged for a team of officers to surround the property.

I knew none of them would enter unless we gave the signal.

Richard had demanded that I come alone.

Instead, I arrived with Dante, Michael, and a recording device hidden inside my coat.

I wasn't going to let Richard control the conversation.

The front doors stood open.

Inside, candles illuminated the grand foyer. Richard waited beneath the family portrait, wearing a tailored black suit and the gold watch he'd stolen from Michael.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Grace.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Don't call me that like you have any right to.””

His smile faltered.

“You look like your mother.””

“You killed the man who raised me.””

Richard sighed.

“Daniel made choices that led to his death.””

“You ordered him murdered.””

“He threatened everything I had built.””

“He was your friend.””

“He was a fool.””

Dante stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Richard glanced at him.

“Still playing the hero, Dante? How exhausting.””

“Where's Sophia?””

“Safe.””

“Bring her here.””

Richard shook his head.

“Not until we finish our conversation.””

I felt Dante tense beside me.

I touched his arm.

“Let me speak.””

Richard watched the exchange with amusement.

“Already learning to manage the great Dante Russo. Your mother would be proud.””

“My mother is dead.””

“And now you know why.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me what happened to her.””

For the first time, Richard's smile disappeared.

“Margaret made her own decisions.””

“She refused to help you kill Daniel.””

“She chose him over me.””

“Because she loved him.””

Richard looked away.

For a brief moment, I saw something beneath his polished exterior.

Jealousy.

Not the kind that flares and fades, but the kind that grows for years until it becomes indistinguishable from hatred.

“She was supposed to be mine,” he said quietly.

I stared at him.

“Your sister?””

“She was the only person who ever understood me.””

“You tried to destroy her family.””

“I tried to protect her.””

“You murdered her husband.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Daniel was going to expose the organization. He would have sent dozens of people to prison. He would have destroyed everything my father had built.””

“So you killed him to save yourself.””

“I did what was necessary.””

I shook my head.

“You've spent your entire life calling your cruelty necessary.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed.””

“Neither did Daniel. Neither did Michael. Neither did Sophia when you used her as leverage.””

Richard's hand tightened around his watch.

Then he reached into his jacket and produced a folder.

“The trust documents. Sign the transfer, and I'll leave you alone.””

I looked at the papers.

“And Sophia?””

“She goes home.””

“And Dante?””

Richard smiled.

“He keeps his empire.””

Dante laughed softly.

“You think I care about the empire?””

“You've spent your entire life building it.””

“And I've spent the last week discovering what it cost me.””

Richard's expression changed.

Dante stepped closer.

“My brother. My wife. My daughter.

Every person I trusted. You turned my life into a prison and convinced me the bars were loyalty.””

He looked toward the family portrait.

“I don't want what my father built anymore.””

Richard studied him.

“Then you're a fool.””

“Maybe.””

Dante looked back at me.

“But I'm a fool who's finally learned what matters.””

I felt tears sting my eyes.

Richard's face darkened.

“Enough sentiment. Grace, sign the documents.””

I picked up the pen.

Then I placed it on the table.

“No.””

Richard stared at me.

“What did you say?””

“I said no.””

“You have no idea what you're refusing.””

“I know exactly what I'm refusing. I'm refusing to let you turn my mother's legacy into another weapon.””

Richard's voice became cold.

“You're making a mistake.””

“Then I'll make it myself.””

He lunged toward the folder.

Dante caught his wrist.

Richard swung at him, but Dante blocked the blow and forced him backward against the table.

“Don't touch her,” Dante said.

Richard struggled.

“You think this changes anything? You think the police can hold me? I own judges, politicians, half the men who'll investigate this!””

Dante released him.

“Not anymore.””

Richard laughed.

“Your word against mine?””

I pulled the recording device from my coat and placed it on the table.

“No. Your words against yours.””

Richard stared at it.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed his face.

“You recorded me?””

“Every word.””

He lunged for the device.

Michael stepped between them.

Richard shoved him, and Michael stumbled against the table. Dante grabbed Richard's jacket, but Richard twisted free and reached beneath his coat.

A gun appeared in his hand.

Everything stopped.

Richard pointed it at Dante.

“Move away from me.””

Dante raised his hands.

“Richard, this is over.””

“No. This ends when I say it ends.””

I stepped forward.

“Put the gun down.””

Richard turned toward me.

“You should have stayed hidden, Grace.””

“You should have left my family alone.””

His expression twisted.

“You think Daniel loved you? He knew you weren't his daughter!””

“He chose me.””

The words seemed to strike him harder than any physical blow.

“He chose to raise me. He chose to protect me. He chose to be my father every day of his life.””

Richard's hand shook.

“And what did I choose?”” he whispered.

“You chose yourself.””

For a moment, I thought he might lower the gun.

Then a small voice came from the staircase.

“Uncle Richard?””

Sophia stood beside Elena.

She had slipped away from the officers outside and entered the house before anyone noticed.

Richard turned toward her.

His expression softened.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

Sophia shook her head.

“Daddy said bad people lie.””

Richard smiled sadly.

“Your daddy doesn't understand.””

Sophia took Dante's hand.

“You hurt Mommy.””

Richard's smile vanished.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“Yes, I do.””

She looked directly at him.

“You said you loved me, but you made Mommy cry.””

Richard's hand trembled.

Then he raised the gun again.

Not toward Dante.

Toward Sophia.

I moved.

So did Dante.

A gunshot exploded through the foyer.

Richard staggered backward, dropping his weapon.

Detective Collins and two officers rushed through the front doors.

“Police! Drop everything!””

Richard fell to his knees, clutching his side.

Dante reached Sophia first, pulling her into his arms.

I knelt beside Richard.

Blood spread across his shirt.

He looked up at me, breathing shallowly.

“Grace.””

I stared at him.

For one moment, I saw the man from the photograph. The brother who had once stood beside my mother, smiling for a camera, before jealousy and greed turned him into something monstrous.

“Why?”” he whispered.

I shook my head.

“You don't get to ask me that.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I was your father.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You were the man who helped bring me into the world.””

I stood.

“My father was Daniel Bennett.””

The officers restrained Richard and called for an ambulance.

As they carried him away, he turned his head toward me.

“Grace, please.””

I didn't follow.

I walked toward Dante and Sophia instead.

Dante held his daughter tightly, his face buried in her hair.

“It's over,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“Is it?””

For the first time, I believed it might be.

But when Detective Collins approached with a final evidence bag, her expression told me there was one last truth waiting to be uncovered.

Inside the bag was a photograph recovered from Richard's wallet.

It showed my mother standing beside a newborn baby.

On the back, in her handwriting, were seven words.

*One daughter survived. The other did not.*
