Chapter 13: The Daughter He Tried to Bury

“Richard Vale is my father?””

The words left my mouth, but they didn't sound like mine.

Dante stood beside my hospital bed, holding the phone that displayed the photograph of my mother and Richard. Michael had gone completely silent in his wheelchair.

Nobody seemed willing to look me in the eye.

I stared at the photograph again.

My mother was young, smiling at something beyond the camera. Richard stood beside her with one arm around her shoulders, looking almost ordinary.

Not like the man who had held a gun against Sophia.

Not like the man who had ordered my father's death.

Just a man standing beside the woman who had raised me.

“Tell me this is wrong,” I whispered.

Dante sat beside me.

“I wish I could.””

“Did my mother know?””

“We don't know.””

“Did my father know?””

Dante hesitated.

That hesitation answered me.

I turned toward the window.

My entire life had become a collection of unanswered questions. The man who raised me had died protecting a secret. The woman who gave birth to me had carried that secret to her grave. And the man responsible for both had spent years building an empire while pretending I didn't exist.

“Get me the rest of the recordings,” I said.

Dante frowned.

“Grace, you need to rest.””

“I've rested enough.””

“You were shot less than twelve hours ago.””

“And I just found out my biological father tried to kill me.””

“He didn't shoot you.””

“He ordered the men who did.””

Dante fell silent.

I pushed myself upright, ignoring the pain in my shoulder.

“Get the recordings.””

He studied my face, then nodded.

“I'll have them brought here.””

An hour later, a detective arrived with a sealed evidence drive and a uniformed officer stationed outside the room.

Detective Sarah Collins introduced herself, placed a small recorder on the table, and explained that the chapel's security system had captured several conversations before the shooting.

“We've isolated three files that appear relevant,” she said.

“The first concerns Daniel Bennett. The second concerns the trust. The third was recorded six days ago.””

“Six days?”” I asked.

Collins nodded.

“Your biological father was apparently aware that you had returned to Manhattan before you knew anything about him.””

She pressed play.

Richard's voice filled the room.

“Margaret's daughter is back in the city. I want her located before she learns about the trust.””

Another man answered.

“What if she already knows?””

“Then bring her to me.””

“And if she refuses?””

Richard's reply was chillingly calm.

“She's my daughter. She'll do what she's told.””

The recording continued.

A second voice asked, “What about the little girl?””

Richard laughed.

“Children are leverage. That's all they've ever been.””

Dante's expression became murderous.

I felt sick.

Detective Collins stopped the recording.

“There's more.””

She played the second file.

This time, Richard sounded furious.

“The original documents cannot reach the authorities. If Grace signs the transfer, the trust becomes mine. If she doesn't, we eliminate the problem.””

A man asked, “And Sophia?””

“She's the key. Michael's signature establishes biological ownership, but Grace controls the records. Once both are secured, the girl becomes irrelevant.””

I covered my mouth.

Dante stood so abruptly that his chair struck the wall.

“I'm going to kill him.””

Detective Collins looked up sharply.

“Mr. Russo, that would be a terrible idea.””

He glared at her.

“Do you have a better one?””

“Yes. Let us prosecute him.””

Dante looked as if he wanted to argue.

Then he glanced at me.

Slowly, he sat down.

“Fine,” he said.

“He lives.””

Collins raised an eyebrow.

“That's a promising start.””

The final recording began.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a woman spoke.

My mother's voice.

“Richard, you promised you'd leave Daniel alone.””

Richard answered, “Daniel should have stayed out of my business.””

“He's your friend.””

“He was a liability.””

“You told me you loved me.””

“I did.””

“Then why are you doing this?””

Richard's voice softened.

“Because I love you enough to tell you the truth. Daniel is not Grace's father.””

My breath caught.

My mother's voice broke.

“He raised her.””

“And he'll continue raising her if he knows what's good for him.””

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then my mother said something that made my chest ache.

“If you hurt him, you'll lose us both.””

Richard's response was immediate.

“Then I suppose you'd better hope I never have to choose.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the recorder.

My mother had known.

She had known who Richard was, what he was capable of, and why Daniel might be in danger.

Yet she'd stayed with Daniel. She'd raised me with him. She'd built a life around the lie because she believed it was the only way to keep us safe.

“Was Daniel my real father in every way that mattered?”” I asked quietly.

Dante looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Then that's the only answer I need.””

I turned to Detective Collins.

“Will you charge Richard with Daniel's murder?””

“We're reopening the investigation. The evidence is strong, but we need to establish the chain of events and corroborate the recordings.””

“Then I'll testify.””

Dante shook his head.

“Grace—”

“I won't spend the rest of my life hiding from a man who has already taken enough from me.””

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“I'll stand beside you.””

The detective gathered her files and left.

Michael wheeled himself toward the window.

“There's something else you should know.””

I looked at him.

“Please tell me it isn't another secret about my family.””

“I'm afraid it is.””

Dante sighed.

“Michael.””

“No. She deserves to know.””

Michael turned toward me.

“Richard wasn't the only person who knew about your birth. Our father knew too. He helped your mother leave the family and arranged for Daniel to adopt you legally.””

I frowned.

“Why would he help her?””

“Because he knew Richard was dangerous. He believed that if you disappeared from the family records, Richard would eventually stop looking.””

I stared at him.

“So the trust wasn't just about Sophia.””

“No. It was your mother's way of ensuring that if either of you ever came under threat, you'd have the means to escape.””

I looked at Dante.

“Then why did Richard want control of it so badly?””

“Because the trust holds more than money,” Dante answered.

“It holds the original records connecting him to the murders, including Daniel's.””

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Richard hadn't been trying to buy a fortune.

He'd been trying to erase his crimes.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

*Your father wants to see you. Come alone.*

A second message followed.

It contained a photograph of Sophia outside the hospital, holding Elena's hand.

My blood ran cold.

Dante grabbed the phone.

“Where is she?””

I was already reaching for my coat.

“I'm coming with you.””

“No,” he said.

I looked him straight in the eyes.

“He's my father, Dante. For the first time in my life, I'm going to make him answer for what he's done.””

Dante's expression hardened.

Then he took my hand.

May you like

“Then we go together.””

And somewhere across the city, Richard Vale was waiting for the daughter he had spent twenty-two years pretending didn't exist.
