Chapter 5: The Recording That Changed Everything
The video played.
But I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
The image was dark.
The camera angle was strange.
It looked like it had been recorded from inside a car.
My voice continued.
“I don’t know how much longer I can pretend.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“That’s your voice.””
“Yes, but I don’t know what this is.””
Margaret stood behind him.
Silent.
Watching.
Waiting.
The video continued.
“I just need him to trust me until the baby is born.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
“What does that mean?””
I felt panic rising.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I swear.””
The video ended.
The room stayed silent.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Who were you talking to?””
I stared at him.
“Nobody.””
Margaret immediately stepped in.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He raised his hand.
“I want to hear her answer.””
I looked at my husband.
The man I had built my entire future around.
“I was never talking like that.””
“But it’s your voice.””
“I know.””
My voice broke.
“But someone edited something.””
Margaret laughed softly.
“Edited?””
She shook her head.
“You always have an excuse.””
I looked at the screen.
Then at the USB drive.
Something felt wrong.
Not just wrong.
Impossible.
I walked closer.
“Play it again.””
Daniel hesitated.
“Why?””
“Because something is missing.””
Margaret rolled her eyes.
“Of course.””
But Daniel replayed it.
This time, I listened carefully.
The background noise.
The pauses.
The cuts.
Then I heard it.
A sound.
A small sound most people wouldn’t notice.
A microwave beep.
I froze.
“Stop.””
Daniel paused.
“What?””
“Play the beginning.””
He did.
The video started again.
There.
Behind my voice.
A microwave beeped.
I looked at Daniel.
“I know where that was recorded.””
Margaret’s face changed slightly.
“Where?””
I turned toward her.
“In our old apartment.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Before we moved here.””
I pointed at the screen.
“That kitchen had a broken microwave. It made that exact sound every time it finished.””
Daniel looked confused.
“So?””
“So I haven’t been there in over a year.””
Margaret said nothing.
I stepped closer.
“This recording is fake.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re saying someone recreated a kitchen sound?””
“No.””
I looked at the USB drive.
“I’m saying someone used an old recording.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“Mom.””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“What?””
“Where did you get this?””
She looked away.
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It matters.””
Her silence answered before her words did.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“You made this.””
Margaret immediately shook her head.
“How could you accuse me?””
“Because you had it ready.””
The confidence disappeared from her face.
For the first time, she looked cornered.
I reached for Daniel’s hand.
But he stepped back.
Not away from me.
Away from everyone.
“I need to think.””
Those words hurt.
Because I knew he was overwhelmed.
But I also knew something had changed.
He finally saw that his mother wasn’t just emotional.
She was calculating.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
Then at Margaret.
“I’m sorry, can you repeat that?””
The woman spoke again.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He looked terrified.
“The hospital called.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“They said there was something strange about your medical records from three months ago.””
I felt cold.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel looked at the document on the table.
Then at me.
“They said someone requested a copy of your records.””
I whispered:
“Who?””
May you like
Daniel turned toward his mother.
And Margaret was already smiling.
